2. ALIANÇA DA TERRA FIRE BRIGADE
• The devastation caused by fire is undoubtedly one of the largest impacts on
Amazonian ecosystems. Fires that occur every year in this region cause irreparable
agricultural damage, dump tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and
destroy biodiversity;
• The Xingu Fire Brigade is an Aliança da Terra initiative that began in May 2009 due
to:
1 ‐ the vast territorial areas with poor governance in the Xingu agricultural
frontier;
2 ‐ the severe annual drought season that dries out forage grasses and native
vegetation;
3 ‐ the misuse of fire by locals;
• The Aliança da Terra Fire Brigade is a pioneering project in the state of Mato Grosso
that serves to remedy this situation by offering on the ground solutions through
cooperative work with both the U.S. Forest Service, the Mato Grosso State Corpo de
Bombeiros, member properties of Aliança da Terra’s Registry for Social‐
Environmental Responsibility ,and indigenous communities in the Xingu region;
3. FIRE BRIGADE OBJECTIVES
• The main objective of the Brigade is to protect the forest located in the Xingu
National Park and onprivate properties registered with Aliança da Terra
surrounding the Park;
• Secondary objectives that underlie the work of the brigade,include:
1 – Train local residents in fire fighting techniques and fire management;
2 ‐ Conduct special training in settlements where 70% of the fires occur;
3 ‐ Reduce the rate of fires in the eastern basin of the Xingu (BHX) and,
consequently, greenhouse gas emissions;
4 ‐ Assist the registered rural properties on the eastern side of the Xingu Basin
in becoming REDD‐Ready;
5 ‐ Create preventative action fire plans;
6 – Utilize Brigade labor in the rainy season to replant forests along riparian
zones on Aliança da Terra registered properties;
10. RESULTS
• The UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE,with the financial help of USAID, put on three separate firefighting
training courses in June 2009, February 2010, and August 2010. The results of thesec ourses include:
– The formation of a permanent fire fighting unit in Aliança da Terra;
– The training of over ninety personnel that live across there on and who help on an “as needed”
basis;
– The formation of a 24 man indigneous fire fighting force at the Xavante Maraiwatsede Reservation
in Mato Grosso.
• As of September 10, 2010, the AT firefighters have successfully extinguished twenty two wildfires as well
as controlled two others, between the Xingu and Araguaia Rivers in north eastern Mato Grosso State;
• The Xavante Brigade successfully deployed and extinguished two wildfires on private property in the
immediate vicinity of their reservation. Besides the environmental benefits, this was a huge public
relations victory for these people;
• The Aliança da Terra and Xavante Brigades not only fightfires:
– May through October : theyfightfires;
– November through April : actively reforest riparianzones on registered AT properties;
– Provide technical assistance to producers in riparianzone management and serve as na important
on the ground communications vehicle for AT.
‐ During the dry season, the Brigade also manages a river turtle conservation project on the
rio das mortes.
