2. What Is a Hazardous
Material?
Any substance that causes
physical or health problems is
a hazardous material.
If you see anything marked
with these signs, treat the item
as a hazardous material.
3. Hazardous Communication Standard
To protect workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) wrote the Hazardous Communication Standard, also called
The Right to Know Standard.
THE RIGHT TO KNOW STANDARD
“We will inform all Employees of the Hazards associated with
the chemicals and products they are assigned to use to
perform their job functions before actually using these
chemicals and products by providing a MSDS sheet for all
chemicals present in our working environment.” (OSHA)
4. How Does BMH Communicate
Hazards to Employees?
BMH informs employees of hazards associated with any
chemicals/products used to perform their job functions BEFORE
actually using the products.
We do this with MSDS Sheets, which are available on Connect
through a link on the left side of the Home Page.
Each chemical user should consult MSDS sheets for specific
chemicals and special instructions in case of spills.
5. Material Safety Data
Sheets Include
Chemical’s physical &
health hazard
Flammability & reactivity
data
PPE requirements
Spill containment
procedures
Compatible clean up
material
Emergency phone
numbers
Chemical identity
Appropriate hazard
warnings
Target organs
Name & address of
manufacturer
6. WARNING:
Read Labels
Labels are a safe way to identify hazardous
materials. Be sure all are clearly labeled.
Report missing or unreadable labels to your
supervisor.
Any time you transfer a chemical to another
container, YOU must label the second
container with the following (find on MSDS
sheet):
– The chemical’s identity
– Appropriate hazard warnings.
