I think I speak for many people when I say that I can’t wait for the day when it finally
warms up around here. While being an Oregon resident has it’s advantages, it just seems to
lack in the sunshine department, and what a better way to brighten up any day than with 200 degree
weather. No more wasting snow days at school, no more long sleeved shirts, and finally an end to all
that SPF mumbo jumbo. You know that without an O–zone layer there’s going to be nothing
strong enough on the market to protect our delicate skin. They’ll probably have some
kind of pill I can take instead. Even if some of the polar ice caps do melt, that just means more
beaches for us on our new glorious days of sunshine. So what if a few million people drown? I
suppose earthweek is just another form of the government keeping us down. We have become far
too brainwashed when we start to feel guilty for living the life of careless slobs. Though, one week
out of the year isn’t too bad to have to plant a tree or recycle your plastics. It is the ones who
spend their time and money developing new, safer techniques to ensure the health of our planet that
need our help the most. They just don’t seem to understand the detrimental importance of
self consciousness. We as citizens, as Americans, as human beings must take it upon ourselves to
clear up any confusion and set these poor wasteful droids into the right direction.

Problem As society expands, it is critical to seek ways to lessen humans' environmental impact. A
key aspect of practicing sustainability is efficiently using resources, and one of such resources is
food. In America alone, about 40% of food goes uneaten, and as the population increases, pressures
on managing this waste will only increase further (Buzby, et al. 499). With many Americans lacking
a secure supply of food, the need for an improved ability to manage food waste is essential.
Furthermore, food waste places a severe strain on the environment. In an article by Buzby, Hyman,
Stewart, and Wells, they state, "Food loss at the retail and consumer levels represents significant
amounts of money and other resources invested in food production, including land, fresh water,
labor, energy, agricultural chemicals (e.g., fertilizer, pesticides) and other inputs to produce food
that does not ultimately meet its intended purpose of feeding people" (Buzby, et al. 492). It is clear
that the problems with food waste are immense, ranging from environmental to economic. Food

I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce
(includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the
water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are
consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to
air pollution, the ozone layer is also being consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the
various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels causes
a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other
high–energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified.
The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would
only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is
that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single
oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence

Over the course of the semester, I feel that, in my Introduction to Environmental Science (EVR2001)
class, I have learned an extensive amount about current, past, and possibly future environmental
issues that our planet is enduring. Many of the issues impacting our environment have caught my
attention and opened my eyes to the effects these issues are causing. Environmental science has had
an impact on me personally, and has changed my understanding and the intensity of my opinions on
many environmental issues in a variety of ways. There are even particular environmental issues that
I find relevant to my own life for many reasons. This class taught me how I can reduce my own
impact on the environment, which has even led me to change some aspects of my life to reduce my

Reflection On Environmental Sustainability
Introduction
This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered exploring the
influences of these my life and how these have altered my view on what is environmental
sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will follow into reviewing my
perspectives on environmental sustainability and how these two experiences influenced this. To
conclude a discussion on my role as a teacher and how this will impact myself when in the classroom.
Part A
The first experience I had was travelling through an area called Baynton about 100kms north east
of Melbourne early in 2009. It was about 6 weeks after the Black Saturday bushfires devastated
the whole region, driving through was incredibly eerie and unsettling. Everything was black and
charred, in the paddocks there was no grass, no fences, all the trees were burnt trunks, no foliage
at all was present. There were no animals grazing in the paddocks, no wildlife was visible and no
green anywhere. Fire is a natural part of life as my friend told me that day, trees will grow again,
fences can be mended, the animals and wildlife will return. People are what matter, thankfully no
one lost their lives in the region I travelled that day. Seeing the devastation reminded me the power of
nature and how there are still many natural occurrences that mankind cannot control or master.

As a small child I can remember trying to even write stories of my own, but never finishing them. I
could tell you about all of the "songs" I wrote that I, at the time, thought were fantastic; but believe
me, they aren't worth anyone's time! In elementary school, as I was just starting to explore my
writing skills, I loved to be around my dad or mom while jotting down my thoughts on whatever I
needed to write about. I think it was just the comfort of my parents that I adored, as any child
does. I loved how they could pitch in their ideas and I would think they were the smartest people
alive! As I started to grow a bit older and was now a secluded type of teenager, writing got a little

Abstract
Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any
undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg.
552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each
of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the
environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue.
Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning
pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution,
scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air
bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential
development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the
lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was
decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous
types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been
working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage
people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to
improve the world and decrease pollution.
The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural
Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is
damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are
two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the
most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the
sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot
formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid

With the increasingly growing concern of climate change and its impact on the environment, it is
reasonable to ask how the environment will affect Earth 's living organisms, from the small to the
big (Freitas et al., 2015). Fish are poikilothermic organisms, meaning their body temperature is
susceptible to and easily influenced by external environmental changes. The metabolic rate, defined
as the total chemical activity in an organism, also changes with body temperature (Pfluegl 2014).
These factors make fish a simple subject to conduct experiments with in regards to the effects in one
area of climate change: the rise of sea temperature (Freitas et al., 2015). The increase of temperature
may affect fish behavior, as well as diet, migration, and other demands that require energy (Johnston
et al., 1987). The effects could ultimately permeate into the ecosystem 's function and by
consequence, humanity (Walberg 2011). This small scale experiment sought to observe the effect of
warm temperature on the metabolic activity of goldfish via the measurement of the concentration of
oxygen the fish consumed. The experiment tested the null hypothesis that increasing the water
temperature of a goldfish 's environment does not have a significant effect on the metabolism rate of
the goldfish.
Methods and Materials:
In order to measure the oxygen consumption rate in goldfish, a small oxygen chamber was used to
