Consumerism & Brave
New World
Alberto Nordmann 9ºC
What?
Consumerism refers to buying and consuming
goods, without needing to.
Where?
Consumerism was first brought up in USA and
some parts of Europe.
When?
It started to grow during 1920s
How?
The main way to spread out consumerism is through social
medias and propaganda. Where companies show an
image, people desire to be/have. Persuading them to buy
their products.
Why?
People tend to fall in consumerism for 2 main reason:
● It makes them feel special/happy/superior.
● To fit into society. Avoid being judged.
Conclusion
I think consumerism is a really important factor in Brave New
World. In the book, the government is making the people
consume things they don't need (like Soma) in order to make
them happy, through propaganda. The government is using
consumerism, to fool people and make them think, they need
those things, while actually is just to keep them busy, and not
question anything. Their lives are already predetermined, they
don’t allow them any source of knowledge (like books), and
just want them to focus on consuming to make profit, which is
the whole purpose of the clones, to consume.
