1. RESTRAINTS SAVE LIVES!
Safety Moment of the Week
October 2 – October 8th, 2016
Restraints are used throughout the day. Driving to
work, at work, at home and at play.
At Home:
• Always wear your seat belt, it is the law.
• Make sure children are seat belted correctly and
that their car seats are installed correctly.
At Work :
• Always inspect the seat belt before use. If a seat
belt is not working, you must tag it out and report
to your supervisor and /or safety.
• Fall protection is required while operating man
lifts or scissor lifts.
At Play:
• When riding carnival rides always inspect
restraints notify the carnival operator if restraint
does not look safe

Restraints Save Lives!
Most drivers and passengers killed in crashes are unrestrained. 53% of drivers and
passengers killed in car crashes in 2009 were not wearing restraints.
Seat belts dramatically reduce risk of death and serious injury. Among drivers and
front-seat passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of
serious injury by 50%.
Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. People
not wearing a seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a
crash. More than 3 out of 4 people who are ejected during a fatal crash die from
their injuries.
Seat belts save thousands of lives each year, and increasing use would save
thousands more. Seat belts saved almost 13,000 lives in 2009. If all drivers and
passengers had worn seat belts that year, almost 4,000 more people would be alive
today.
These facts show that increasing seat belt use is critical to reduce injury and saving
lives.
Very few of the injuries associated with lift trucks are due to overturns. But a
disproportionate number of the very serious injuries are. Tip overs resulted in 73
percent of the 11 total deaths listed.
Seatbelts are a crucial piece of safety equipment on any vehicle, but are particularly
important on fork lifts.
They serve two key purposes: preventing fork lift operators from being thrown from
the vehicle and stopping operators from trying to exit the vehicle in the event of a
tip over.
Falls from heights are one of the leading causes of serious injury and death for
workers in the construction industry.
For a safe work environment, successful fall protection must be addressed and
implemented at job sites.
