Issues & Business Challenges
ā€¢ Recently, Burger King, Unilever, Nestle and Kraft Foods decided to
stop purchasing palm oil produced by the Sinar Mas Group. Their
reason is the allegation of the destruction of tropical forests that
endanger animal life, reduce the ability to absorb carbon dioxide
which is one of the main causes of global climate change, better
known as global warming.
ā€¢ Timberland, one of the manufacturers of outdoor clothing and
shoes, was also hit by the same thing (Harvard Business Review,
September 2010). The morning of June 1, 2009, Jeff Swartz,
received e-mails from 65 thousand activists and angry subscribers.
They accuse Timberland of buying its material from illegally logged
forests in the Amazon. Worse still, Timberland didn't know at first
whether the material they purchased was from Amazon or not,
which implies that the allegations may be true.
ā€¢ In May 2010, the whole world was in an uproar over a suicide at
Foxconn, China. Eight of its employees died by suicide within five
months.
Issues
ā€¢ Every five minutes someone dies of a disease related to asbestos. The
statistics in an expertsā€™ report for the European Union (EU) reflect the
frightening extent of the asbestos problem: 500,000 people will die of
asbestos-related cancer in Europe alone by the year 2030.These are the
statistics despite the fact that processing and importing of the material has
been banned in the EU for a number of years. Because asbestos-related
cancers have a long latency period, the number of victims will even continue
to increase until 2025; only then will the numbers in Europe go down.
ā€¢ Elimination of asbestos-related diseases should take place through the
following public health actions:
ā‘ recognizing that the most efficient way to eliminate asbestos-related
diseases is to stop the use of all types of asbestos;
ā‘ replacing asbestos with safer substitutes and developing economic and
technological mechanisms to stimulate its replacement;
ā‘ taking measures to prevent exposure to asbestos in place and during
asbestos removal (abatement), and;
ā‘ improving early diagnosis, treatment, social and medical rehabilitation of
asbestos-related diseases and establishing registries of people with past
and/or current exposures to asbestos.
Issues
ā€¢ This national and international phenomenon clearly implies that
today's companies cannot just pay attention to profit anymore.
ā€¢ Triple Bottom Line (TBL or 3BL) concept. Or also 3P ā€“ People, Planet
and Profit. In short, these three are pillars that measure the value
of a company's success with three criteria: economic,
environmental, and social.
ā€¢ The TBL concept implies that companies must prioritize the
interests of stakeholders (all parties involved and affected by the
activities carried out by the company) rather than the interests of
shareholders.
ā€¢ Management expert from Harvard Business School, Michael Porter,
in his writing entitled Strategy and Society: The Link Between
Competitive Advantage and Corporate Social Responsibility
(Harvard Business Review, December 2006), has conducted
research and suggested that social concepts should be part of
corporate strategy.

Only a minoritythinkthe asbestos industry isin decline
People have been wondering for years how long the asbestos industry will last. Youā€™d think all of the asbestos would run out
eventually, right? But the reality is that asbestos was used in building materials for a long time and, although asbestos is sometimes
removed from buildings, in many case itā€™s simply managed.

Why We Need to
Manage Risk ?
The goal of risk management is to increase the likelihood of an
organization achieving its objectives by being in a position to
manage threats and adverse situations and being prepared to
take advantage of opportunities that may arise.
20
The Purpose of Risk
Management is not to
eliminate risk, if you strive
to eliminate risks to zero
level, you are in process to
kill your business
business transformation is the process of changing systems, business
processes, and technology as a whole to achieve measurable improvements in
efficiency, effectiveness, and customer and employee satisfaction.
Technological developments encourage increasingly fierce business
competition and changes in consumer behaviour. Business actors who are
unable or even unwilling to carry out the transformation must be prepared
to face the brunt of the wave of disruption.ā†’ mindset change
BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION
1. Adaptive
Business actors to be successful in business transformation is an adaptive attitude to the changes that
occur. Not the strongest, biggest, or smartest, but the most adaptive to change that will survive.
2. Collaborative
Currently, business actors are strongly advised to choose the path of collaboration rather than fighting
against waves of disruption.
3. Sharing
Must have the attitude to always share in the face of an all-open digital era like today. Sharing is not
only a matter of material, but also a matter of experience and knowledge (knowledge sharing). Sharing
is also not only within the scope of social media, but also meetings and face-to-face meetings.

Asbestos is an Inhalation Hazard
Alveoli
Airborne asbestos fibres inhaled deep into the lung can

ā€¢ Tiny breath able asbestos fibres are deposited in the
alveoli, the ending small air sacs in the lungs.
ā€¢ The bodyā€™s defence mechanisms cannot break down

Other Cancers
Evidence suggests that ingesting

Asbestosis is a serious chronic, progressive disease that can eventually
lead to disability or death in people exposed to high amounts of
asbestos over a long period. Asbestos fibers cause the lung tissues to
scar; when the scarring spreads, it becomes harder and harder to
breathe. Symptoms include shortness of breath, a dry crackling sound
in the lungs while inhaling, coughing, and chest pain. This condition is
permanent and there is no effective treatment.

ā€¢ periodical medical checks for population at risk living in its surrounding areas
ā€¢ Attention should be directed to small informal
ā€¢ workshops which use asbestos with high risk of significant environmental
exposure

1. In facing these global challenges Pertamina has answered it by creating synergic and integrated
strategies as outlined in the form of Long-term Work Plans, Short-term Work Plans, action plans which are
spelled out in performance measures in key performance indicators at each level both at the corporation,
Operation Unis, Business Units and Subsidiaries.
2. Of the various types of innovations carried out in Pertamina refer to the strategies that have been set
including green innovation policies, by creating a balance of business goals, namely profit,
environmental insight and social care, namely the triple bottom line: Profit, Planet and People.
3. The Purpose of Risk Management is not to eliminate risk, if you strive to eliminate risks to zero level, you
are in process to kill your business
4. The goal of risk management is to increase the likelihood of an organization achieving its objectives by being
in a position to manage threats and adverse situations and being prepared to take advantage of
opportunities that may arise.
5. ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001:2018 Standards as the basis for green innovation, sustainable development
and competitive advantage

  • 5. Issues & Business Challenges ā€¢ Recently, Burger King, Unilever, Nestle and Kraft Foods decided to stop purchasing palm oil produced by the Sinar Mas Group. Their reason is the allegation of the destruction of tropical forests that endanger animal life, reduce the ability to absorb carbon dioxide which is one of the main causes of global climate change, better known as global warming. ā€¢ Timberland, one of the manufacturers of outdoor clothing and shoes, was also hit by the same thing (Harvard Business Review, September 2010). The morning of June 1, 2009, Jeff Swartz, received e-mails from 65 thousand activists and angry subscribers. They accuse Timberland of buying its material from illegally logged forests in the Amazon. Worse still, Timberland didn't know at first whether the material they purchased was from Amazon or not, which implies that the allegations may be true. ā€¢ In May 2010, the whole world was in an uproar over a suicide at Foxconn, China. Eight of its employees died by suicide within five months.
  • 6. Issues ā€¢ Every five minutes someone dies of a disease related to asbestos. The statistics in an expertsā€™ report for the European Union (EU) reflect the frightening extent of the asbestos problem: 500,000 people will die of asbestos-related cancer in Europe alone by the year 2030.These are the statistics despite the fact that processing and importing of the material has been banned in the EU for a number of years. Because asbestos-related cancers have a long latency period, the number of victims will even continue to increase until 2025; only then will the numbers in Europe go down. ā€¢ Elimination of asbestos-related diseases should take place through the following public health actions: ā‘ recognizing that the most efficient way to eliminate asbestos-related diseases is to stop the use of all types of asbestos; ā‘ replacing asbestos with safer substitutes and developing economic and technological mechanisms to stimulate its replacement; ā‘ taking measures to prevent exposure to asbestos in place and during asbestos removal (abatement), and; ā‘ improving early diagnosis, treatment, social and medical rehabilitation of asbestos-related diseases and establishing registries of people with past and/or current exposures to asbestos.
  • 7. Issues ā€¢ This national and international phenomenon clearly implies that today's companies cannot just pay attention to profit anymore. ā€¢ Triple Bottom Line (TBL or 3BL) concept. Or also 3P ā€“ People, Planet and Profit. In short, these three are pillars that measure the value of a company's success with three criteria: economic, environmental, and social. ā€¢ The TBL concept implies that companies must prioritize the interests of stakeholders (all parties involved and affected by the activities carried out by the company) rather than the interests of shareholders. ā€¢ Management expert from Harvard Business School, Michael Porter, in his writing entitled Strategy and Society: The Link Between Competitive Advantage and Corporate Social Responsibility (Harvard Business Review, December 2006), has conducted research and suggested that social concepts should be part of corporate strategy.
