Let’s look at the key tech available Wearable Tech Roundup: What’s on Offer Technology is inseparable. How many hours do we spend with our gadgets around us? From smartphones to smart appliances to smart homes. Today’s world, as we know of, is inconceivable, without these gadgets. Remember that empty feeling when you forgot your smartphone at home? In the last decade or so, computer technology has advanced by leaps and bounds and computers have become smaller and smarter. So, after smartphone becoming a runaway hit, what next? The natural progression is to embed computers into… er …onto our bodies. The new trend of building smart devices that we can wear, such as Google Glass or Samsung SmartWatch. These gadgets also have a name. They are called “Wearables”. Wearables have been identified as the top IT trend of 2014 by various sources. Wearables bring in a new concept to an old thought. When smartphones became part of our lives, they also brought in a slew of dangers with them. Some proving fatal – such as talking while driving or texting while crossing the road. Yes, of course, these devices help us stay on top of important things. But, at a cost of disconnect from the immediate surroundings. These distractions sometimes spell disasters and become the cause of concern for many who do not like IT invading our lives. This is where the “wearables” bring the promise of a connected yet safer world. What if, we never need to take our phones out of the pocket to read that email, but still that email is available to us at-a-glance? What if we do not have to operate the phone while driving, but still are able to perform most of the functions? What if, there is a smart device that continuously monitor our health and in case of concerns, connects us to our doctor and helps with the diagnosis instantly? Why wearables are hot Wearables, such as Smart Watches, help us glance at the information right on our wrists, they help us take calls by just tapping on them. Now watches, by their very design, provide information “at-a-glance”. We do not need a distraction to twist our wrist slightly while our hands man the steering wheel of the car, to look at the time. So, to take the same idea taken a step ahead, think of a Smart Watch that connects to our phone over Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and provide us email, text, time, weather, health monitoring, right on our wrists to be available “at-a-glance”. This possibility, guaranteed by the current technologies, helped the idea of wearables to take on like a rocket, so much so that some of the tech giants have already come up with “wearable” gadgets. Wearable tech is basically devices that can be worn on the body such as watches, spectacles, jewelry, helmets and more. They consist of three main components – sensors, display and a computer chip that provides the infrastructure and architecture for data processing and presentation. Let us look at the consumer tech companies that are at the forefront of developing wearable devices. iWatch The holy grail of consumer technology for some, Apple is a brand that believes in perfection, harmony and ease-of-use “Looking at these different technologies, it is only logical to combine them and create wearables that compliment technologies like Google Now or Apple. Thus we will end up with devices that are voice-activated, and provide information at-a-glance either through heads-up display or through wrist wearables”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ as simple as second nature to us. As the rumours go, Apple is about to debut its iWatch concept very soon. This will be a smart watch that will have a plethora of sensors and will tie in with a companion iPhone app to provide a complete health monitoring system right on our wrists. Sony’ Core Sony launched ‘Core’ recently. It’s a small chip that is designed to integrate with a number of devices. One of the integrations shown are with a waterproof wristband that will track our daily physical activity. Google’s Android Wearables Google Glass is the gadget that has hogged most of media attention recently. Google also have other devices under the umbrella of Google Android Wear. Google have been trying with many different concepts such as driverless car, activity trackers, etc. and there is a whole bunch of devices that theoretically can be run off of the company’s Android operating system and can integrate with the Android-powered smartphones such as gloves, helmets, and so on. Only time will tell which of them will see the light of the day. Fitbit-fitness band Fitbit is a fitness startup that has been made famous by its iPhone app. Fitbit builds a wristband that tracks our physical activity, monitors the vital signs and also provide advanced healthcare functions. These tech gadgets come in the form of accessories that we can wear on our bodies. There are other technologies that are currently being used and are quickly becoming second nature. For example Google Now and Apple Siri. Both of these are voice-acti-vated technologies that have a sort of artificial intelligence that help them learn as we use them. Through these we can perform most of the functions and gather information just by talking to our phone. For example, when we say, “OK Google Now. Call office”, it will dial the office num-ber. Or, when we activate Siri and ask “Where can I find a Chinese restaurant nearby?”, it will show us the list of restaurants where we can get Chinese cuisine along with directions to reach there. Now, looking at these different technologies, it is only logical to combine them and create wearables that compliment technologies like Google Now or Apple. Thus we will end up with devices that are voice-activated, and provide information at-a-glance either through heads-up display like Google Glass or on our wrist like the iWatch concept. Whatever be the gadgets that we choose to be part of our lifestyle, it is guaranteed that this trend will quickly become mainstream consumer technology in the foreseeable future.
