The Transformational Leadership style has been identified as the most successful method of leadership in todays business world. Transformational Leaders can turn a poor performing department or entire organization into a high performing one. Our scenario: You have recently been named Hospital Administrator of a small Midwestern Seventy-Five bed hospital. A little over a year ago, the hospital switched over to Electronic Medical Records. Since then, the Medical Records Department has changed dramatically; some positions were eliminated, others, including those requiring degrees in technology were created. The roles and responsibilities of all staff members have changed. Sixty percent of the staff were retained during the metamorphosis but the requirements for the job due to the EMR requires familiarity with computers and software that many staff are not comfortable with. The department is at internal odds between the people used to the way weve always done it and the new IT people, those comfortable with technology and those struggling, and even between generations. There is low morale, motivation is lacking, and teamwork is almost non-existent..

Executive Summary
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of articles, books, blogs, and Websites filled with
advice about how to manage remote workers (or telecommuters, or workshifters, or
distributed teams1
While those slogans do point in the right direction, they tend to be stated as universal
truths even though the real world is full of complexity and varying contexts. Worse, they
don’t begin to deal with why and how companies choose to embrace workforce
mobility. And an organization’s motivations and experiences make a huge difference in
what works and what doesn’t.
). However, most of that advice amounts to broad generalizations or
“bumper-sticker”-like slogans that are well-meant but rather shallow: “Pay attention to
your staff’s personal life,” “Measure what they produce, not how much time they
spend,” “Hold regular conference calls,” “Check in with your subordinates on a regular
basis.”
Therefore, with Citrix Online’s support and encouragement, we set out to produce a
different kind of understanding about the challenges surrounding the management of
remote workers. Most importantly, we studied the real-world experiences of leading-
edge organizations in order to identify what really works, and under what conditions.
This summary of our research addresses three fundamental management questions:
1. Why do organizations launch distributed work programs in the first
place?
2. What practices and tools do successful organizations rely on to manage
remote staff effectively?

them. However, our current interest and focus is on best practices in managing people who are in
locations at some distance from their boss. In our judgment, what matters is the distance between

Executive Summary
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of articles, books, blogs, and Websites filled with
advice about how to manage remote workers (or telecommuters, or workshifters, or
distributed teams1
While those slogans do point in the right direction, they tend to be stated as universal
truths even though the real world is full of complexity and varying contexts. Worse, they
don’t begin to deal with why and how companies choose to embrace workforce
mobility. And an organization’s motivations and experiences make a huge difference in
what works and what doesn’t.
). However, most of that advice amounts to broad generalizations or
“bumper-sticker”-like slogans that are well-meant but rather shallow: “Pay attention to
your staff’s personal life,” “Measure what they produce, not how much time they
spend,” “Hold regular conference calls,” “Check in with your subordinates on a regular
basis.”
Therefore, with Citrix Online’s support and encouragement, we set out to produce a
different kind of understanding about the challenges surrounding the management of
remote workers. Most importantly, we studied the real-world experiences of leading-
edge organizations in order to identify what really works, and under what conditions.
This summary of our research addresses three fundamental management questions:
1. Why do organizations launch distributed work programs in the first
place?
2. What practices and tools do successful organizations rely on to manage
remote staff effectively?
1 We tend to use those terms interchangeably, though there are certainly subtle distinctions among
them. However, our current interest and focus is on best practices in managing people who are in
locations at some distance from their boss. In our judgment, what matters is the distance between
manager and subordinate, not what label someone has put on the job category.

battle, as Coca-Cola which has its reasons for killing Tab. The product was cut as part of a
sweeping reduction of Coca-Cola's beverage portfolio, announced in 2020. The reasoning was
clear: The 200 brands on the chopping block half of Coke's portfolio together made up just 2% of
Coca-Cola's total revenue, CEO James Quincey said. It just wasn't worth it for to keep pouring
resources into these flagging products. "It was a hard decision to discontinue TaB," a company
spokesperson told CNN Business. "In order to continue to innovate and give consumers the
choices they want, we have to make tough choices about our portfolio." The spokesperson said
that "there are no plans to bring [Tab] back." Tab fans think Coke made the wrong call. From
where they sit, Tab sales were stilted because Coca-Cola neglected the brand, letting it linger
without advertising for decades. They point out that even without ads, Tab fans have still sought
out the product imagine, they say, what some marketing could do. Plus, nostalgia is hot right now.
It may be hard to imagine a massive company like Coke giving in to a comparatively small fanbase
of a forgotten brand. But it's happened before. The SaveTabSoda committee Adam Burbach
noticed a flurry of activity online after Coke announced Tab's demise. Across social channels, fans
were mourning the product and wondering whether they could change Coca-Cola's decision. "A lot
of people [were] saying, we should do something," he said. "The initial ... thought behind the
committee was coordinating efforts so that we had a single voice." Burbach took action. He
launched a full-blown campaign to bring back the soda along with a core group of fans, including
Priest, that calls themselves the SaveTabSoda Committee. The group has coordinated call days,

Transformational Leaders can turn a poor performing department or entire organization into a high performing one. Our scenario: You have recently been named Hospital Administrator of a small Midwestern Seventy-Five bed hospital. A little over a year ago, the hospital switched over to Electronic Medical Records. Since then, the Medical Records Department has changed dramatically; some positions were eliminated, others, including those requiring degrees in technology were created. The roles and responsibilities of all staff members have changed. Sixty percent of the staff were retained during the metamorphosis but the requirements for the job due to the EMR requires familiarity with computers and software that many staff are not comfortable with. The department is at internal odds between the people used to the way weve always done it and the new IT people, those comfortable with technology and those struggling, and even between generations. There is low morale, motivation is lacking, and teamwork is almost non-existent.
