Project Outline
Overview:
For this project, we are building on the work we have done in class to produce a multimodal
project that rhetorically informs and persuades your audience about the ways in which an
environment from your past has influenced your thoughts and actions. You will select one text
from your previous analyses (in any modality) and construct a project that utilizes written text
and at least 2 other modalities to support the focus of your project.
Requirements for Constructing Your Written/Linguistic Modality
1. Select an example from the previous analyses that has importance to you, especially
one that you feel comfortable writing about. You will first explore the background of
your text with examining what it is and how it was constructed. In addition, you should
perform preliminary research by analyzing how other people have connected to and
been influenced by this text (or similar texts). You may approach this by examining
perspectives in magazines, online articles, journals, and through reviews. By doing this,
you will able to provide the necessary background and context of your text for your
reader. In addition, you will be able to establish how others have interpreted and
interacted with this text so that you may transition into your own interpretation,
analysis, and experiences with your text.
2. After establishing the context of your chosen text, you will perform a rhetorical analysis
in which you will explore what about this text is persuasive/influential and why with
specific examples and explanations. For this, you will want to take note of what about
your text is the most influential in terms of its rhetoric and appeal. Your goal is to
explain what in this text is influential and why so that your reader has concrete
examples of how this text has influenced the way you think and act.
3. Your next step is to document and narrate your personal experiences that have shaped
the way you think and act that are relevant to the text you have that you have chosen.
Your goal for this narrative is to “show” your reader your own personal context of how
you have come to think and act the way you do through your experiences.
4. The last step of your project is to synthesize narrative and rhetorical analysis by
establishing concrete connections between the ways in which your experiences and text
have shaped the way you think and act. This will function as evidence and justification
to show your reader exactly how your text and experiences have shaped the way you
think and act.
*Your written modality should fall within the range of 5-7 double-spaced pages*
Requirements for Your Multimodal Components:
In addition to your linguistic portion of your project, you will need to choose at least two other
modalities to incorporate into your project. The haptic, visual, and auditory modalities will be
used to facilitate and support the focus and purpose of your project rhetorically. By using these
other modalities, you will complement and complicate the ideas you present through your
linguistic modality in a way that captures a more complete view of the way in which you think
and act based on the influences of your text and personal experiences.
