1. The background for my idea:
According to a research mentioned in a book: Freedom Rising by Christian Welzel (see
attached file for reference), the author defined Emancipative Values with 12 items from
the World Values Survey (for the data, see worldvaluessurvey5.sav attached), these 12
items are namely:
1. Toleration of Abortion
2. Toleration of Divorce
3. Toleration of Homosexuality
4. Women’s Equality: Politics
5. Women’s Equality: Education
6. Women’s Equality: Jobs
7. Priority More Say: Local
8. Priority More Say:National
9. Freedom of Speech
10. Independence a Desired Quality
11. Obedience NOT a Desired Quality
12. Imagination a Desired
He also defined Secular Values with 12 items from the survey, namely:
1.Low Priority on Parents’ Pride
2.Low National Pride
3.Rejection of Respect for Authority
4.Unimportance of Religion
5.No Religious Practice
6.Not a Religious Person
7.Indifference about Bribery
8.Indifference about Cheating
9.Indifference about Tax Evasion
10.Distrust in Police
11.Distrust in Courts
12.Distrust in Army
He plotted several countries according to these two dimensions. (See the plot from the
book, page 87)
Then, he plotted the same countries according to their income. (See plot from the book,
page 98)
2. What I want to do:
I would like to use the same operational definitions for Emancipative values and
Secular Values as used by the author. Then, I would like to compare that distribution to 1)
Objective income and 2) Perceived income. The objective if to see which one of the two
latters predicts Emancipative and Secular values the best.
The problems I encountered and in which I need your help:
1. It will be the first time I will use Spss for such analysis, thus I need someone to make
sure I am doing things right;
2. I ignore how the author has measured income in his book. Therefore, I was thinking to
define it through:
A. Objective income: Measured by the Gini Coefficient
B. Perceived income inequality distribution: Measured by item v116 from the survey
( see both Worldvaluesurvey5.sav and Questionnairewave5.pdf)
For this? I needed an opinion on the comparability of these two indexes.
3. I needed a guidance for the statistical analysis.
