3. Validate Data
• Calculate the missing count, BDL count for
each variable
• Choose variable with low missing and BDL
values
• Replace the missing one with mean value,
and the error estimate set to 4*mean
• Replace the BDL value with ½ DL, set the
error estimate as 5/6*DL
4. Selection of variables
• Good signal-to-noise ratios (Na vs Na+)
• Important to mass (sulfate, carbon, nitrate)
• Tracers for important sources (K, Fe, Zn,
V, Se etc)
• Normal species should have at least 50%
above detection limit
• Key tracers (V for oil combustion, Se for
coal, K for BB) should have at least 33%
above detection limit
• Take care of spikes
