1. Be Realistic: Easiest way to fall short of
your goal is to make it unattainable.
2. Plan Ahead: Don’t make your resolution
on NYE, get started earlier.
3. Outline your Plan: Establish how you
will fight against the temptation.
4. Make a “Pros” and “Cons” List: This will
help you keep focused on your goal.
5. Talk about it: Tell people about it and
you will receive support.
6. Reward Yourself: Don’t get carried away
by treating yourself to an entire box of
chocolates, but treat yourself.
7. Track your Progress: Short term goals
are easier to achieve. Write down your
progress to keep you motivated.
8. Don’t beat yourself up: We all fall down,
just be sure to get back up and brush
yourself off.
9. Stick to it: It takes about 21 days to
make something a habit and 6 months
for it to become your personality...be
patient!
10. Keep Trying: Take a breath and remem-
ber why you started in the first place.

This is a new section that we are using to focus on different employees every month. We
all work together but do we really know what each other does? This is your chance to
learn!
Tell me a little about yourself and your work history.
I have roughly ten years of professional experience in an administrative capacity. I have
worked as a customer service representative, work force
manager, supervisor and now a Section Chief over the
Commercial and Residential Connects
section. Currently, I oversee the daily operation and
personnel for the Commercial/Residential
connect group.
Tell me about a typical day at the office,
what is your role at UCS.
My role involves extensive management
responsibly and staying organized is not an
option. I start each day planning and
organizing work demands for our
group. Communicating with my team is a
must to organize and prioritize tasks. I
dedicate time, supporting and monitor staff
performance. But as always, a portion of my
day goes to handling escalated cases and trouble
- shooting unusual issues. On top of these
responsibilities, there are always planned activities
such as staff meetings and coaching sessions.
What would people never guess you do in your role?
I spend time reviewing and analyzing Texas property and Real Estate laws and/or speaking
with the City Legal Department. It’s not unusual to request clarification on a Deed or
Commercial application.
What do you like most about your position?
The fulfilling emotion of being able to lead people. Having the opportunity to develop and
empower employees to meet and exceed customer expectations and achieve the
organizational objectives with the available resources.
What is your favorite part about working with UCS/City of Houston?
That there is never a dull moment, I learn something new every day
What do you find most challenging at UCS?
We are so busy all the time and sometimes I forget or miss opportunities to connect with
people at personal level.
Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had.
When I was younger I worked for a college newspaper as a field journalist. It was a fast
pace and entertaining experience.

Dear City employees,
Sadly, our time together is nearing an end. I didn’t want to leave without
letting you know how lucky I feel to have had the opportunity to work side-
by-side with you. I set five priorities for my administration: public safety,
infrastructure, Jobs and sustainable development, fiscal responsibility,
quality of life.
There is not a single problem or issue related to these five priorities that
has come before us that isn’t better now than it was six years ago. Whether
it was holding the line on crime and spending, rebuilding our infrastructure
and adding thousands of jobs or bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to food
deserts, improving city employee health and restoring our parks, we have
truly done great things together. Personally, I am proudest of our work to
end chronic homelessness, make Houston more sustainable, shore up wa-
ter and sewer department finances, implement Rebuild Houston and make
Bayou Greenways a reality.
Public Service is a calling. Because we work for this wonderful, amazing
city, we need to bring our “A” game every day. By and large, city employ-
ees provide exemplary service day after day after day. Although this often
goes unnoticed by the public, I want you to know that I recognize how hard
you have worked over the last six years. I’ve tried to demonstrate appreci-
ation for this hard work through pay raises, investment in leadership train-
ing and by encouraging an overall positive work environment.
I love this city and want it to be the best place in which to live, work and
raise a family. As I prepare to hand over the
reins to my successor, I am satisfied that
with your help we’ve been able to do all that
we can to meet that goal. The city is truly in
a good place for the future.
Of course, the New Year and the new ad-
ministration will bring new challenges. I
know you will tackle them with the same
dedication and support you have exhibited
during my tenure. I could not have done it
without you!
With much appreciation for a job well done,
