SOLAPUR:
• Geographical History : Solapur district was a part of Pune,Ahmednagar and Satara District.In
1871, subdivision of solapur and 2 subdivision of satara district(Sangola and Pandharpur)
were joined to form solapur district.Full fledged Solapur district was formed in Maharashtra
in 1960.
• Origin: It has been said that Solapur came into existence with the arrival of Agasthya, the
first Aryan who crossed Vindhya Mountains and settled on the banks of Godavari.
• Evolution of name: 1)It is believed that Solapur is derived from two words; ‘Sola’, which
means sixteen and ‘pur’,which means village. It was considered that Solapur city was spread
over sixteen villages. 2)According to the inscriptions of Shivayogi Shri Siddheshwar, the town
was called as SONNALAGI (till the period of yadav),SANDALPUR during the period of
Muslims),later British rulers changed it as SHOLAPURI
• Dynasties: Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrkutas, Devagiri Yadavas and Bahamins also
ruled by Hindu Chalukyas and Devagiri Yadavas ,later it became the part of Bahmani and
Bijapur kingdoms. The city was also ruled by Maratha Peshwa. The most part of the Solapur
fort was constructed in the possession of Adilshah of Ahemdnagar.

BHUIKOT FORT:
• Bhuikot fort is situated at the banks of Siddheshwar lake
• Its also called fort of Solapur or Solapur fort
• It is said that Srikanth a Hindu king built the fort for his wisdom in 12th century .
• Later Muhammad Gawan from Bahmani dynasty built another fort around the fort built
during Hindu reign and made the fort impregnable.
• After Bahmani dynasty the fort was under possession of Adilshah. He ruling Bijapur at that
time.
• At the same time Nizamshah also ascended on the throne of Ahmednagar
• To strengthen the relations between Nizam and Adilshah they established martial relation
between them and Adilshah promised to give Solapur fort as a dowry to his daughter but
after marriage he refused to give the fort and this started the war between the both kings
and Nizam was defeated .
• After Bahmani, Nizamshahi and Adilshahi the fort was under Aurangzeb . During his reign
most of his time was spent around the fort .
• Later this fort came under the control of Nezam of Hyderabad and later Marathas.

SIDDHESHWAR TEMPLE:
• Location: Core Area of the city, Solapur, Maharashtra 413002
• Belongs to : Hindus and members of the Lingayat faith.
• Dedicated: Lord Siddheshwar, one of the forms of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
• Story: It is believed that Sri Siddharameshwar dug the lake himself, when all the holy rivers
came and asked for permission to reside in the lake, thus making it sacred.
• Built by :Yogi, and a devotee of Shri Mallikarjuna of Srisailam, Shri Siddharameshwar.
• Architectural Style :The temple's architecture is a beautiful blend of North Indian and South
Indian styles, making it a unique sight to behold.
• Construction :A stone walled The temple’s architecture is a beautiful blend of North Indian
and South Indian styles, making it a unique sight to behold,which is lined with sheets of
silver with beautiful engravings on it can be found on the back wall of the ante Chamber.
• Temple is attributed to having installed 68 Shiva lingams in the main courtyard; the amrit
linga being one of them. There are several smaller temples within the complex, such as ones
dedicated to Ganesha, Vithoba and Rukmini. Additionally, within the sanctum of the main
temple complex there is an idolic effigy of Siddheshwar. A silver-plated figure of the
mythological bull nandi is also present.
• The temple and lake have been administered since 1899 by the ‘Shri Siddheshwar Devsthan
Panch Committee’

MUNICIPAL COUNCIL BUILDING OF SOLAPUR:
• Location : Ambedkar chowk, Railway line, Solapur.
• Established in : 1860 and granted the status in 1963.
• HD college Haribhai Deokaran High School (HDHS) is a public Marathi and Semi-
English Medium School in Solapur, Maharashtra, India.
• The school was fo unded by the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, Solapur was named after
the Haribhai Deokaran Trading Company, whose owner Hirakaka Gandhi had
donated ₹ 27000 to establish the school.

GADDA YATRA
• Shri.Siddheshwar is the Gramdaivat of Solapur city. A Siddheshwar Temple is located at the
heart of the city.
• It is surrounded by a large lake which resembles as view of an island. The brief history of
Shri.Siddheshwar runs like this.
• There was a great saint Shri.Siddaram, who preached the teachings of Shri.Basaweshwara. A
young girl, inspired by the teachings of this saint wished to marry the saint.
• Shri.Siddaram being a brahamachari denied to marry her and gave permission to marry with
his Yogadanda.
• The same marriage function is celebrated every year on the Makar Sankranti for three days
on Bhogi, Sankrant and Kinkrant. The Nandi Dhwajas are presumed as Bride and Groom for
the marriage. This festival falls around 14th Jan. every year. A fare popularly known as Gadda
Jatra is arranged for fifteen days during this period

SHRI VEER TAPASVI TEMPLE

• BELONGS TO : Hindu temple in Solapur, Maharashtra
• ESTABLISHED BY : Hotgi Bruhnmthadhyaksha parampujya shri. Sha. Bh. Taporatna
yogirajendra shivacharya mahaswamiji.
• Shivlinh in Hotgi math tapasvi temple 108 ft height and 36 ft wide
• There are 1008 shivlingas in this temple.

FESTIVALS AND RITUALS
• Every year solapur goes through a cycle
of fests and festival like gudi padwa,
ramnavmi, Hanuman jayanti,
mahaekadashi, golkul asthamai, pola,
Ganesh chaturthi, gouri pujan,
Dusshera, Diwali , holi and other festival
celebrated all over India.In month of
Chaitra, suvasinis celebrate haldi
kumkum, vatpornima in month of
jyestha, in Shravan women observe Sola
somvar vrat. In bhadrapada hartalika
and Rishi Panchami are celebrated. In
pausha bhogi is celebrated. In magh
sankrant and kinkrat are celebrated
• Garbhadhana had importance as an event to be recognised when child marriages
were vogue. Among Hindu caste Hindu the ceremonies of Annaprashan, jawal and
thread gridding are carried out.
9. CULTURE
CUISINE
• As Solapur city of Maharashtra share its boarders with the
neighboring states, it has mixed culture of Maharashtra,
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
• Solapur is generally famous for its spicy food and the extensive
use of peanuts in their preparations. Chutney made from
peanuts, which is called Shenga chutney.
• Crisp jowar bread is a common food in Solapur because jowar is
widely cultivated here.
• Khara Mutton (Mutton Achar) or salty goat curry are the other
popular dish of this region.
• Solapur is rich with many holy places including famous temples.
These temples serve food during festival seasons and it is called
‘Mahaprasad’.Lapshi and sheera are serve in mahaprasad.
• Solapur, even though is located in Maharashtra, is a neighboring
city of South Indian States such as Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka. So, you can see South Indian breakfast items like idli,
dosa, uthappas and masala dosa with sambar and chutney

• Main occupations are handlooms factories which make chaddars and towels.Most
of the people are engaged in running their family business of gold.
• Agriculture and animal husbandry are performed on a small scale.
• Women are engaged in making bidis.
