미국 리테일 시장은 Amazon이라는 거대한 맘모스에게 장악되고 있다고 하죠. 아마존의 각종 사업 진출로 기존 기업들이 한마디로 망하게(?) 되는, 혹은 위협받게 되는 상황을 나타내는 Amazoned라는 표현까지 등장할 정도입니다. 그리고 이런 아마존의 공격적인 행보 중에서도 가장 최전선에 나타난 것이 계산 없는 편의점, 아마존 고(Amazon Go)일테죠. 지난 1월 시애틀에 위치한 아마존 고가 드디어 일반 대중들에게 공개되었는데요. 쇼핑의 미래가 구현된 아마존 고에 다녀와서, 아마존고의 경험을 UX lab스럽게 기록해보았습니다. 아마존 고는 말그대로 대기 줄도 없고, 계산도 없지만, 수많은 카메라로 가득한 곳이었습니다. 중요한 건 아마존고의 경험이 전통적인 쇼핑 경험과 유사한듯 하면서도 전에 없던, '못 나가겠어 순간'을 만들어낸다는 것이겠죠. 원래 쇼핑과 절도는 계산(checkout)이라는 한끗 차이인데, 이 계산이 없이 가게를 나가는 건 쉽지 않습니다. 계산이 없어 끝이 명확히 설계되지 않은 쇼핑 경험은 낯설어서 혼란스럽기까지 합니다. 하지만 일단 결심을 하고 큰 용기를 내어 가게를 빠져나가면, 분초 단위로까지 분석된 가게에 머무른 시간, 놀랄만치 정확한 영수증을 받게 됩니다. 이제부터는 혼란은 없고 자신감이 생기게 되죠. 아마존고 경험은 이렇듯 일견 전통적 쇼핑 경험 중 가장 중요한 지점인 계산 과정을 파괴적으로 재구성하며, 아마도 차차 없애나가려는 시작점으로 보이기도 합니다. 그럼으로써 사람들은 점점 기술을 믿고 의존하게 될 겁니다. 그러니까 아마존고 경험의 요체는 결국 낯선 경험 속에서도 사용자가 기술을 믿을 수 있도록 하는 순간이 될 것입니다. 그런 순간을 어떻게 디자인할지, 혹은 기술을 맹목적으로 믿는 것을 경계하는 순간을 어떻게 디자인할지를 고민하는 것이 결국 UXer들이 앞으로 할 일이 될지도 모르겠군요.

UX를 전공으로/업으로 삼는 분들에게 인공지능은 피할 수 없는 화두가 되어버렸죠. 모든 것을 '알아서' 해주는 인공지능이 출현한다면, 그때도 UX는 필요할까요? UX가 필요한지에 대한 위기론까지 대두될 정도인데요. 이런 때일수록 UX가 무엇인지, 그 정의를 명확하게 해볼 필요가 있습니다. 이 연구는 2009년 CHI에 발표된 논문으로, 275명의 UX 업계 종사자들을 대상으로 서베이를 진행하여 무려 UX의 정의를 찾고자 시도하였습니다. 거의 10년이 되어가는 지금, UX의 의미는 어떻게 변해왔을지 생각해볼 시점인지도 모르겠습니다.
