1.Titles
Volga River runs slowly in the morning fog.
The tremendous red sun comes up from the water, as if staring at
the grasslands on both two riverbanks of Volga River.
Drumbeats of the royal guards appear to come from the horizon,
from weak to strong. Those monotonous but rhythmic drumbeats hit
people’s heart like many pieces of hail falling from the sky.
The military band that was lined in a square array show up on the
ramp, followed by a splendid Russian royal carriage that was drawn
by six horses.
After the horse-drawn vehicle, goes the swaggering royal guards.
2.In Khan’s Yard
Scaffolds, ladders, and some decorative materials make the place
topsy-turvy.
At least ten Russian craftsmen are busy decorating.
The finished part of the palace clearly shows that it has been
turned into Russian style.
3.In Khan's Palace
A portrait of Genghis Khan.
In front of the seat of Khan, the queen and the prince is gazing
at each other face to face.
More than ten maids are looking at the mother and son without
saying anything.
The prince threw himself into the queen’s arms:” Eej (mother), I am
not going to Petersburg! ”
The queen clutches the prince’s robe with a cramp, looking numb.
The prince entreats again: “ Mother, I am not going anywhere! ”
The queen shakes her head stiffly.
The prince asked in despair: “ Why must we go? ”
The teeth of the queen bite her shaking underlip with blood coming
out from it slowly.
4. Military Band, Royal Carriage and Royal Guards are Oncoming.
Some Mongolian herdsmen stand in the grass, looking at this troop
which rides on in majesty.
5.In the Newly-built Camp of Ubashi Khan
A huge tent of middle troops is set up in as many as ten yurts.
Some Mongolian soldiers are still using ropes to stabilize the
footings. The huge tent waves from left to right to the rhythm of
the ropes being pulled.
Around the tent, stand some fully-armed and argus-eyed Mongolian
soldiers nearby.
6.In the Tent
Empty, with grass over knees uncleared.
A ray of light shone on the portrait of Genghis Khan which is hung
in the front. The portrait swings with the tent, as the light
moves on Genghis Khan’s face from left to right.
Ubashi Khan looks up at the portrait in the grass quietly, sitting
cross-legged.
Lama Zarsan sits aside, reciting the sutra silently while
fingering the beads.
Ubashi Khan’s shoulders start twitching.
Lama Zarsan begins to run his beads at fast-speed, with his
prayers speeding up.
Ubashi Khan chokes and asks the master ruefully: “ Master, how can
we end up like this?”
Being silent, Lama Zarsan slowers his fingering the beads.
Ubashi Khan: “ Master, master please! Answer me!”
Lama Zarsan’s words are profound that it feels like these words
are from the ancient times: “Nature changes, sun comes up and goes
down, moon is not always at its full.”
Ubashi Khan: “Could it be said that our ancestor — Genghis Khan’s
greatness can’t be brought back?Is there any chance for us to have
a hero like him? ”,
Lama Zarsan : “ What goes up, must come down; what comes down,
looks for peace. Lust is never limited. By obeying the will of
God,the natural law, you can be a real hero.”
7. Outside the Tent
Bosaler the company commander comes by riding a horse, jumping
down and heading for the tent in hurry.
A few warriors draw their side swords in a sudden to stop him from
rushing in.
Soon, a badly wounded battalion commander staggers along with a
few injured soldiers.
Seeing the brave coming back from the battle field, all the
warriors salute them with their swords up.
Warrior A: “ Welcome back, heroes, who fight for our honor! “
The commander arrogantly pushes the warriors aside and tries to go
into the tent.
However, after the salute, many swords lie across his chest.
The commander is so pissed off that he draws his sword. So did his
warriors.
The imperial warriors are also not holding back, arraying around
the commander.
The sword falls from the commander’s hand for he is so exhausted
that his body shakes before he falls down. His followers all put
their swords back in sheaths and surrounded him.
Bosaler is absolutely shocked at what he saw.
8. In the Tent
Ubashi Khan: “Genghis Khan, our ancestor, carries swords and
arrows and gunpowder, stepping on the unbounded lands. Many people
were plunged in misery and suffering. Is that obeying the ‘natural
law’? ”
Lama Zarsan : “ Let people know how big the world is, so they can
communicate and trade; hero follows the rules of nature to
succeed, so nature flourishes by right of him.”
Ubashi Khan: “How great was our ancestor Genghis Khan and how
pathetic we are now! Is the integration of the world that leads us
to fragmentation, a natural law? ”
Lama Zarsan : “ The rules of heaven are heartless.”
Ubashi Khan: “ The rules…the rules of heaven? The only thing we can
do, is to obey?”
Lama Zarsan : “ Yes.”
Ubashi Khan: “ What is the law that we should obey today? ”
Lama Zarsan : “ Survive and seek peace, seek peace to get safe.”
Ubashi Khan: “ Master, what you meant…was that, by achieving this
pathetic purpose, a hero can also be made? ”
Lama Zarsan : “ Understand the law and obey it, then be a hero! ”
Ubashi Khan turns around, with a worn and resolute look.
Their gazes meet.
Ubashi Khan puts his palms together and bows: “ Master, give me
some time to understand! ”
Lama Zarsan lifts his hands, the two parts of the beads are
pulled parallel.
Lama Zarsan : “Khan, insight is understanding.”
9.Outside the Tent
The followers support the commander with their hands, fill him
with a leather bag of milk.
Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent slowly.
All the warriors step aside to make a path for him, half kneeling
with their heads down.
Ubashi Khan then walks quickly towards the commander and squats.
He sadly stares at him without saying a word.
The commander looks at him in deep sorrow as Ubashi Khan’s face
covered with tears: “Khan, the war isn’t over! Nothing has ever
changed, again, all of our Mongolian soldiers died first! ”
Ubashi Khan runs his eyes over the survivals, standing up slowly.
He tells the guards around him: “ They need to get some rest. Put
out their fear with the best wine! ”
Bosaler meanwhile kneels in front of Ubashi: “ Khan, the
ambassadors of Catherine the great have arrived!”
The commander struggles to get rid of the hands that support him,
throwing himself on Khan’s feet: “ We must stop dying unworthy for
them! We people are the strongest warriors in the entire world!
Every time, we sink into the toughest situation, exchanging those
turks’ lives with ours! There is not even a last man standing!
Khan, we didn’t bring shame. Is those greedy conquerors, they
won’t give us a chance! ”
Ubashi Khan can’t bear to look at him directly. He raises his head
with his eyes closed.
10.Outside the Camp
A squad of Cossacks is rushing towards the camp. They meet Ubashi
and his cavalry head-on.
The Mongolian warriors encircle the whole Cossack immediately.
The leader of the Russian cavaliers shout out: “ Mongolians are
cowards! You slipped away with the war not being ended! According
to her majesty the queen’s law, your heads should all be cut off!”
Ubashi Khan’s face turns ghastly black with rage, and
simultaneously, his gaze may frighten the life out of someone.
The leader seems scared: “ Are…are you Ubashi? What I meant
was…um…many cowards hide in your troop, and they must be taken
away to get their punishment from our queen!”
Ubashi Khan draws his sword from the sheath of his waist all of a
sudden.
All the warriors pulls out their swords and pushes their horses to
pounce on the Cossacks.
A short battle.
A machete is raised above the leader’s head, and about to go down.
Ubashi Khan yells out: “ Keep him alive!”
11.In Front of Khan's Palace
Military band strike with soothing drumbeat.
On the footboard of the royal carriage, stands an ambassador of
queen Catherine, who is dressed in tight army uniform, and has an
air of superiority. She looks surly reserved.
Behind the carriage, goes the royal guards in a square array.
Ubashi Khan sits on the horse loftily. Behind him is the Mongolian
army in loose battle array.
The horses’ hooves of the royal guards are as steady as rock.
The Mongolian’s horses clip all along.
The Captain of the royal guards: “ Ubashi Khan, please get down
from you horse, and be in readiness for the holy ambassador of her
majesty the queen!”
The captain of the Mongolian warriors: “ The ambassador of the
queen, please step out of the carriage to accept Ubashi Khan’s
request of presence.”
The situation becomes absurd.
The ambassador’s facial expression changes as she is surprised
just then. Now she seems to be hesitating.
Ubashi Khan is calm as water, with his eyes looking into the
distance, as though he is immersed deeply in imagination.
The envoy moves her feet, walks down the wooden ladder from the
carriage, bowing with one of her hands across her chest.
Ubashi Khan jumps off the horse, hangs his sword on the saddle and
comes to the ambassador.
The ambassador holds the letter in both her hands: “ It is in the
command of you highness that…”
Ubashi Khan interrupts her: “ Are you a woman?”
Those rude words makes the ambassador embarrassed.
Ubashi Khan smiles slightly: “ I am not sure…Let me just treat you
as a man for now! ”
The pretty envoy is irritated with her face turning red in anger.
Ubashi Khan gestures his warriors to let them bring the leader of
Cossacks before the envoy.
A warrior who rides a horse carries the leader with his arm down.
The poor headman strikes out the air, and shouts: “ Let go of me! I
am a loyal warrior of her highness! I can’t bear your savage-like
assault!”
The Mongolian warrior throws down the leader. Just as he was about
to hit the ground, a bright machete split the body.
The ambassador yells, stepping back.
The royal guards draw their swords at the same time.
The captain of the Mongolian warriors says loudly: “ This man,
insulted Ubashi Khan and his warriors. This is the punishment he
deserves! ”
The ambassador cools herself down. She then cast her deadly look
at Ubashi Khan.
Ubashi Khan is calm as usual, treating everything indifferently.
The ambassador surly hates his heartlessness. She takes off her
hat and throws it to the guard behind her.
Her golden hair falls perfectly. Then she peers at Ubashi Khan
with arrogance.
There is slight tenderness in Ubashi Khan’s eyes as he is
confronting this beautiful woman.
A delicate hand reaches out in front of Ubashi Khan: “ I am the
niece of Queen Catherine—Princess Bosnia, Nataliya Nikolaevna. ”
A faint smile crossed Ubashi Khan’s face. He lifts up her hand and
kissed it.
12.The Audience hall of Khan’s palace
A rackety and magnificent banquet.
A few beauties are dancing the cheerful and broad-hearted
Mongolian dance.
Whole roast lambs, different containers with wine, mountains of
fruit and fried food, milchigs are placed on the long table in the
front of the hall.
Well-dressed Mongolian maidservants shuttle between the tables.
Under the portrait of Genghis Khan, Ubashi Khan and his queen sit
there. The prince and Princess Bosnia are seated on two sides of
the table closest to Ubahsi Khan.
Ubashi Khan observes the people in different camps quietly, as if
being able to understand how the royal guards and the Mongolian
nobles indulge in such fine wine and food.
The queen is trying to restrain herself from being too sad.
The prince glares at the princess and holds the hilt of his side
sword with his slightly shaking hand.
Princess Bosnia mildly looks at the nervous prince. She is
pondering over what the prince is made of.
Constantine the master of ceremony walks forward and bows in front
of Ubashi Khan. Then he turns around and says: “ The warriors of her
majesty the queen, my honorable guests, I now announce you that
her highness, the queen with holy spirit, had already conferred
Earl Ivan Ely Iggy on Prince Asarai. Also, under the name of the
Madonna, Prince Asarai shall be baptized and regarded as the
godson of her highness, in order to show respect for the queen. I
suggest that Prince Asarai….I’m sorry…Earl Ivan Ely Iggy should
propose a toast to the ambassador of the queen, our honorable
Princess Bosnia!”
The royal guards begins to cheer: “Ypa ( hurray) !”
A few Mongolian noblemen stampede. However, they shyly quiet
themselves down when seeing most of the others stay calm.
Prince Asarai looks at Ubashi Khan for further movements.
Ubashi smiles, as if he wants him to decide it himself.
Prince Asarai comes to the table and fills his bowl with kumiss,
and then fills another with strong white liquor.
A maidservant holds a tray and comes to the prince and the
princess.
Princess Bosnia rises to her feet with astonishment, reaching out
her right arm to the cold and arrogant prince.
Prince Asarai shakes his head when seeing her arm, picks up that
bowl with kumiss.
The maidservant holds the bowl with white wine and gives it to the
princess.
Princess Bosnia hesitates to get the bowl. The strong scent of
white wine makes her knit her eyebrows.
Prince Asarai holds the bowl with both his hands: “Me, Prince
Asarai of Turehot. You, Princess Bosnia. According to the
etiquette of Mongolia, if we drink up this bowl of wine in our
hands, we become friends!”
Princess Bosnia comically says: “Wow, you’re eloquent!”
Prince Asarai: “We Mongolians need friends,so, we learn the
manners of welcoming our guests when we’re born!”
Princess Bosnia says sincerely: “ You are a clever man, Holy Marry
blesses you!”
Prince Asarai: “ My father told me, it is always reliable to depend
on yourself!”
The princess admires him by nodding her head.
Prince Asarai swigs down the wine.
“ Hang on! ” Princess Bosnia starts to realize that the his wine is
different from hers, “ Prince Asarai, are we drinking the same
wine? I found the color different!”
Prince Asarai: “ Different people, different wine.”
Prince Bosnia: “ I want yours.”
Prince Asarai: “ You have the chance before you take the bowl. Now
it’s too late to avoid drinking it!”
“What if I don’t?” She asks.
Prince Asarai says: “ Refusing to drink the wine we offered means
you are unwilling to be our friend!”
The royal guards seem to be angry, ready for action.
Princess Bosnia asks: “ What if I let someone else replace me?”
Prince Asarai answers: “A friend can not be replaced!”
Princess Bosnia: “ Do you really want to be friends with me?”
Prince Asarai: “As long as you are a friend, I am.”
Princess Bosnia: “ Ok, then I will do!”
Constantine: “ Your Highness!”
She swallows it with her pretty blue eyes wide-open.
Prince Asarai turns around and walks back to his seat.
Ubashi Khan burst into laughter: “ Good! For the princess’
briskness, I will drink for company!”
Princess Bosnia claps her hands animatedly because of the effect
of the wine.
13.The Harem
The queen holds the prince tightly in her arms. “My son, you did
great! You did great…” She says with her eyes filled with tears.
The prince asks: “Mother, can I be a hero?”
At this moment Ubashi Khan walks in and answers: “ Yes my son, you
will. And your mission now, is to bear everything in a strange
place like a hero!”
Prince Asarai: “ Father, bearing makes a hero?”
Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, the one who bears everything is a hero.”
The queen’s body shakes.
Prince Asarai struggles to free himself from his mom, standing in
front of the Khan: “Father, I will never disappoint you!”
14.A garden in Slavonic style
A statue of Mary nursing the baby Jesus, paintings of Russian
Orthodox on the wall, dazzling tulips…
Ubashi Khan looks about and says: “This is not the kind of garden
I love. From now on, I will live in a camp on the grass!”
The queen whispers: “You can’t stomach all these?”
Ubashi Khan: “ Right! They treated me as a heathen. But I will
never believe in what they believe!”
The expression on the queen’s face warns the Khan. “ My queen, are
you…tempting me to speak like you?”
The queen drops to her knees: “ Khan, I beg you, a child should
never bear the things that a hero can’t!”
Ubashi Khan smiles grimly: “ A hero? Are you jeering at me in your
heart?”
The queen: “ Khan, I just want you to figure a way out. Our son, is
neither that “ Earl Ivan Ely Iggy”, nor the godson of the queen.
He’s …he’s just a hostage!”
15.The sky seems low at dusk. Ubashi Khan rides slowly with some
warriors along the Volga River.
16.Outside the Abakov mansion
Two royal guarding warriors stand with a musket in each of their
hand.
Ubahsi Khan takes a look at the guards near the gate for a moment,
looking deep thought. Just about he is to leave, the butler of the
Abakov family—Segoule runs out in haste: “Khan! Khan! Wait a
moment!”
Ubashi Khan stops and turns around.
Segoule kneels down in front of the horse: “ My honorable Khan, you
can’t just pass by without entering!”
Ubashi Khan: “ There is a special guest in the house.”
Segoule: “The ambassador came to visit my master.”
Ubashi Khan: “Correct! She should be paying visit right now. After
all, your family is the first to abandon the Buddha and believe in
God.”
Segoule: “ At least, I am still a Buddhist.”
Ubashi Khan: “That I will remember. You are probably a piece of
gold in the sand. ”
Segoule: “ For the sake of the queen, my honorable Khan, please,
come in. Oh no, I will ask my master to come to welcome you. ”
Ubashi Khan: “ No need!”
Cracking his whip, Ubashi Khan leaves with his warriors.
17.In the living room of Abakov’s mansion
The fine Russian feast is ongoing.
Abakov: “Khan left? ”
Segoule: “Yes, he knew you have guests here,so…”
Princess Bosnia: “ Khan left because of me? I will go and ask him
to come!”
18.Outside the gate
Princess Bosnia gazes at the dust faraway, as if losing something.
Princess Bosnia mutters: “Is his arrogance intelligence, or
stupidity? ”
Constantine smiles full of mischief: “My dear Princess, the
arrogance of a man who thinks wrongly about his present situation,
is definitely no intelligence. ”
19.In the interior hall of the government office of King Batu
Decorated in the color of gold and jade but with an air of kitsch.
The silver plates carry some European and Mongolian food. The
match seems a little odd.
The white-bearded Batu is learning to use knife and fork with his
mind fully focused.
Ubashi Khan considers this way of eating troublesome and puts
those aside. Then, he reaches for the Mongolian knife which is in
the hand of his warrior, and pares the meat by holding it in his
hands. Afterwards, he takes up the lucid goblet to drink.
The oil stain and the handprint with small fragments of meat is
left on the glass goblet.
Batu frowns when seeing this.
Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, Turehot is at the point of survival. For our
hundreds of thousands of people, I hope for your help. ”
Batu: “My dear nephew, are you trying to bring your uncle
troubles? When you are happy, you look for worries. Just like
those Arabs, sprinkling those weird seasonings on the delicious
lamb?
Ubashi Khan: “Uncle! My father charged me with the duty of finding
a new home for my people. I will not give up fighting for his last
words! ”
Batu: “Right, your father have been hesitating his whole life, he
refused to make obeisance to the Russian emperor, also he was not
able to make his army strong. I conquered the lands and almost
lost my own life in the ravine of Transcaucasia. Finally, I made
it and attained peace. But he, he left his ridiculous wills to his
son? Are we going to walk the same dangerous path of his because
of his last words?”
Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, it is true, that you are living a good life.
But take a look at my people, there are soldiers dying in every
single household every single year! How long will this last?”
Batu: “ Oh, nephew, since the age of Genghis Khan, it has been the
duty for a Mongolian soldier to die on the battle field! You don’t
have to waste your time on such unachievable dream!”
Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, we can’t build up another invincible empire.
But I believe that, we Mongolians still have the power to win back
a land of peace of our own.”
“A land of peace?”Batu has his eyes wide open before bursting into
laughter, “My nephew! You are more childish than your father! Do
you know anything about childish? Childish equals to foolish!”
The guard captain of Ubashi Khan— Selengjab suddenly pulls out the
sword and points it at Batu: “You madcap, how dare you humiliate
our Khan!”
Batu is so scared that both his knife and fork drop on the table.
“Selengjab! You, you want my nephew to bear the crime of killing
his uncle?”
Selengjab: “You must apologize for what you said to Khan.
Otherwise, I will cut off your head with my machete!”
Batu stares goggle-eyed at Khan. “Neph…My Khan, I,I didn’t mean to
insult you! I just wanted to tell the truth!”
Ubashi Khan stands up, throwing the cloth that cleans his hands on
the table: “My poor uncle, please forget what we said today. As
long as no one else knows, you are safe!”
21.In the interior hall of the government office of King Batu
Batu has not yet recovered from the shock.
Bayar, who is dressed in Russian clothes comes to his father Batu
with his body lowered: “ Dad, I heard what Khan said. What is he
gonna do? ”
Batu does not say a word.
Bayar: “Dad, Khan is planing on something stupid. The ambassador
is still here, should we just…?”
Batu fells Bayar with a blow: “You little bastard! Never mention
it again or I will cut your ears!”
He is extremely irritated.
22.Near Volga River
Under the moonlight, the river glints.
Ubashi Khan stands still, deep in thought.
Bosaler the steward of the palace comes and whispers: “Khan, the
imperial edict of the assembly is ready. ”
Ubashi Khan: “It is not the right time.”
Bosaler: “Khan, we are running out of time! Our prince is being
sent away!”
Ubashi Khan: “Then…he shall leave.”
Bosaler: “But…the queen, she…”
Ubashi Khan: “What about the queen?”
Bosaler: “A maid says, she lost her sleep for some days. Though
she seems alright, she’s likely to…”
Ubashi Khan: “To get mad, right? Ok, serve her well!”
Bosaler: “Khan, maybe, she needs you the most at this point.”
Ubashi Khan: “After a short period of silence. “ I want to see the
master. ”
Bosaler takes out his pocket watch and says: “Is it too
late,Khan?”
Ubashi Khan: “No, he’s always been waiting for my questions. ”
23.On the other side of the river
Princess Bosnia is wandering in the moonlight on her horse, under
the protection of a dozen of royal guards.
Princess Bosnia: “It’s weird. He’s arrogant, but he makes people
wonder. He’s sycophantic,but troublesome.”
Constantine tentatively asks her: “ My honorable princess, aren’t
you being fond of that Mongolian way of arrogance and rudeness?”
Princess Bosnia smiles in silence. She points at a golden roof
building with her whip.
Princess Bosnia: “ Constantine, what is that house for? The one
stands alone.”
Constantine: “That is the Mongolian church. They believe in a god
called Buddha.”
Princess Bosnia: “What’s the difference between our God and
theirs?”
Constantine: “Totally different. Because of the doctrine of
Buddhism, they repel collective action but advocate self-
comprehension of kindness and forgiveness.”
Princess Bosnia: “I don’t understand. Avoid common action and
believe in kindness and forgiveness? How can these things forge
such brave,strong and battlewise nation!”
Constantine: “ My princess, this is an unresolved mystery.”
Princess Bosnia“I would like to go into the house. ”
Constantine smiles: “Princess, their churches are for men so no
woman is allowed to enter. Especially at such quiet night.”
Princess Bosnia giggles: “ Now I know, the best weapon to conquer
them is woman, am I right?”
Constantine looks uncertain: “ My princess, I am thinking…What you
said must come from the most brilliant mind.”
24.Possession of Court
Ubashi Khan: “Master, maybe I was overhasty.”
Lama Zarsan : “ The instinct of the father will hand down to his
son. You don’t have to blame yourself too much, as long as you
know.”
Ubashi Khan: “There is fog blocking my eyes, I can hardly see
where the land of peace is.”
The rolling beads.
Lama Zarsan : “Khan,I , this old lama, will be leaving tomorrow.”
Ubashi Khan is shocked: “Where are you going master? Why don’t you
let me know even just a little about it? Such sudden departure,
you will take my soul away!”
Lama Zarsan: “Where your mind is stored, where your soul lays.
Khan, now that you’ve already known your mission, no one will ever
take your soul away. ”
Ubashi Khan: “Will you be back one day?”
Lama Zarsan: “ Coming is leaving, vice versa. Khan, without
leaving, how can there be coming?”
Ubashi Khan: “Master, where do I find a guide if you're not here?”
Lama Zarsan: “Being afraid of nothing is the real wisdom, as well
as being afraid of everything. Khan, you will do it well.”
25.Inside the interior room of Khan's Palace
The queen looks depressed and haggard. There is that murderous
look in her eyes: “This is the only way to keep my son here! ”
Bosaler: “Your highness, I…I’m afraid…”
Th queen: “You used to be my father’s slave. Who do you think it
was that helped you to get your position? !”
Bosaler drops to his knees: “Your highness…”
26.In Princess Bosnia’s bedroom of field headquarters
The princess seems excited, writing with her quill as she is
dressed in a nightgown. Sometimes, she stands up and walks around.
Voiceover: “…Your majesty the queen, inspired by you, I realized
that there is that greed of a conqueror in me, which leads me to
live up to your expectations! ….If…Ubashi Khan is not a mighty
lion that can help you gnaw the countries of the world, he, at
least is a violent tempered horse that carries some conquerors’
desire. For such horse, you may need to protect his wild nature.
Once he lost his dauntlessness, all he can do will be pulling the
ploughs on the land you conquered as if tamed. But, you, the great
Queen Catherine, you are never in need of a docile horse…”
27.Outdoor
Constantine is hovering. Finally, he makes up his mind to knock
the door.
28.Indoor
“Tap-tap.” Princess Bosnia smiles, reaching for the door.
Constantine kneels down with one knee and kisses her hand: “My
beloved Princess, your servant Constantine Alexey Norwich, is
always ready to serve you!”
The princess pulls away her hand and smiles again: “My respectable
Constantine Alexey Norwich, I am immersed in the excitement of
writing to our sacred queen. So, don’t destroy such mood. ”
Constantine stands up with disappointment: “Your highness, I
always understand you!”
Princess Bosnia watches him go. The door is closed from the
outside.
29.Outside the residence of the protocol officer
First rays of the morning sun appears. Bosaler looks around,
knocking the door in haste.
A cold sword is lying on his neck.
Bosaler trembles as his legs lose balance.
The royal guard lifts him from the ground.
Constantine walks out of the door. Putting his hands on the
frightened Bosaler, he shakes his head: “There are cowards even
among Mongolians! Perhaps I have to rewrite the Mongolian history
of conquering, and add some special analyses in it.”
The royal guard: “Constantine Alexey Norwich, how will you execute
him? It is obvious that scaring him will not lead to death.”
Constantine: “Bing him in!”
30.Inside the room
Bosaler stutters: “My..my master is Duke Abakov…our queen’s
father, he…he is also a loyal man of her majesty the queen.”
Constantine: “I was invited to the feast yesterday, did he say
anything that matters?”
Bosaler sensed the mildness in Constantine’s words, realizing what
to say. “My master…is a pious believer of the Eastern Orthodox. He
hates the pagans. The home of the pagans here is right in that
temple. I…I’ve been watching that old lama. Ubashi Khan was
talking to him yesterday for quite a long time.”
Constantine: “You call this…information? ”
Bosaler: “No, I meant there maybe a strong connection between the
old lama and Ubashi’s scheme. For the efflorescence of the Eastern
Orthodox, that lama must be…”
Constantine: “A sudden movement! Boom! God will never know!
Bosaler: “Yes.”
Constantine thinks about it for while. “Finally, you said
something useful !”
31.In the room of the royal guard
The guard is looking into the mirror, dressing up his suit:
“Constantine, should Princess Bosnia be informed?”
Constantine replies: “Well, I guess no one here would get our
princess involved in such dirty business. This place is filled
with danger.”
32.In the camp
Hundreds of Mongolian warriors are ready to go.
Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent, fully armed.
A chiliarch goes forward: “Khan, those menacing soldiers are
heading for the temple! ”
Khan vaults into the saddle, pulling his sword out and shouting:
“Come with me! If lama is hurt, we will cut their princess into
pieces!”
33.Outside the camp
On the saddles of the horses, sit hundred of warriors with their
machete swinging. They rush out the camp like a tide, and run
deeply into the grassland.
The dust blocks out the first glow before sun comes up…
34.In the temple
A ray of morning light thrusts out through the clouds and shines
on the golden-masked statue of Sakyamuni. The strong strikes on
the door can’t even interrupt his inner peace and calm.
35. Near the gate of the temple
A row of royal guards aims at the door with their guns.
All of a sudden, they fire a volley of shots into the temple at
the same time. The sawdust flies in the air.
The royal guards kick the door open and are about to enter.
Constantine yells: “Wait!”
Following the frightened gaze of Constantine’s, they see many
horses coming from somewhere far. The ground seems to be shaking.
36. The swords reflect the sunlight. The crew of horses come
toward the glow of sun horizontally.
37. Near the gate of the temple
Constantine and his fellows are surrounded, having not even a
hairline crack to escape.
Ubashi Khan stares at Constantine cold-bloodedly.
The muscles of Constantine’s face tremble.
There is still some smoke coming out of their muzzles.
Hooves move restlessly…Machetes gleam.
Constantine calms himself down and goes out of the circle which
protects him. He puts his one hand on his chest and bows.
Constantine: “My…reverent Khan, perhaps you received the same
message. This place, must be protected.
Ubashi Khan does not say a word with his eyes closed.
The Hooves come closer to the shrinking troop of royal guards.
The shooters’ arms are shaking.
Constantine suddenly shouts out: “Oh, you crafty Mongolians! It
was you who set the trap! We did not intend to enrage you!”
Ubashi Khan looks at him sharply: “What—did you say?”
Constantine waves his hands with fury: “Using tricks to frame us,
Khan, this is not what you should do!”
Ubashi’s gaze skips him and stays on the spire of the temple. He
speaks with low voice: “Go and take a look, see if our master is
alright.”
A few warriors jump off, stabbing the machete into the dirt.
38.In the temple
The commander and the warriors go through every corner with their
palms put together.
39.Near the gate of the temple
The commander rushes out of the temple, pulling out his machete
from the dirt and pointing it at Constantine: “Where is our
master! ”
Constantine shakes: “Trap, it is totally a trap!” He says.
The horses get vehement. Those glinting machetes are swung above
the warriors’ heads.
The captain of the royal guards waves his gun and shouts: “Back
up! Back up! Or I will shoot!”
Mongolian warriors are waiting for Ubashi Khan’s command. The
horses’ hooves start to move restlessly again as if getting ready
for the order of the horse under Ubashi Khan…
40.Sunshine floats on the top end of the grass. Princess Bosnia is
riding towards the people.
Voiceover: “ Wait! Please wait!”
41.Near the gate of the temple
Mongolian warriors move aside for the princess as she hustles to
see Ubashi Khan. When she is in front of him, she gives him a
piece of paper: “Take a look at this!”
Ubashi Khan is shocked when he sees this. “Where is the master? ”
Princess Bosnia: “I know nothing about your master, but if you
admit that this is a letter from him, then you should end this
conflict!”
Ubashi Khan waves his hand, letting some warriors step back.
He stares at a few royal guards who look relaxed and complacent:
“You offended the holy Buddha. You must pay the price!”
Princess Bosnia: “What do you want?”
Ubashi Khan looks up and refuses to answer.
The commander: “You should cut off one of your arms as a warning!”
Princess Bosnia: “Khan, this is a punishment of extreme
brutality!”
The commander says as he pokes his machete into the earth: “You
decide it yourself! Mongolians from Turehot never bargain!”
Machete quivers near Constantine’s feet.
He steps back astonished: “No…no!” He throws his helpless look to
the captain of the royal guards.
The captain puts his gun back. Then he yells: “For the sacred her
majesty the queen, for the noble princess, I will do it!”
He hurls himself forward and pulls the machete out from the
ground. His arm is apart from his body in an instant.
A shrill yell comes out of the princess: “No————!”
42.In the Khan’s garden
A knife gleams as an arm of the scarecrow falls on the ground.
Soon the upper body of another scarecrow is cut off from the lower
part…
Prince Asarai grinds his teeth, chopping the scarecrows one by
one.
The queen comes and throws her arms around him: “My son, you don’t
have to go!”
The prince is not fully convinced: “Really?”
The queen holds his sweaty face and kisses him as if mad: “My son,
no, it will never happen, I will never let you go!”
Asarai gets rid of her hug and holds the machete in front his
chest: “Mom, I will keep on practicing around my father, and
become the best warrior of Turehot!”
Looking at this immature boy, the queen murmurs: “Keep on
practicing, hope your father will always be around!”
Prince Asarai jumpily rush at the scarecrows to cut them into
pieces…
As the queen is walking by the lilac trees, she sees the intense
eyes of Lama Zarsan .
The prince is still copping…He suddenly stops——in front of him
stands Lama Zarsan .
Prince Asarai: “Master!”
Lama Zarsan hands him a small box made of sheepskin: “Prince, I’m
leaving, this is for you.”
Prince Asarai supports his body with the machete stabbed into the
ground to kneel down with one knee, taking over this small box.
Lama Zarsan puts his hand on the prince’s head and then chants and
prays for a little while. He raised him from his knees: “Prince,
there are a few things I brought from Tibet in this box. They
maybe needed when you leave your father.”
Prince Asarai: “No! Master, my mother told me that, I don’t have
to leave my father anymore!”
Lama Zarsan shakes his head: “Prince, you have no choice, neither
do your father. You must go to that strange place.”
“Why?” He is shocked.
Lama Zarsan: “Because you are the prince of Turehot, you lost the
right to decide when you’re born.”
Prince Asarai’s voice shakes: “Master! I want to be a hero!”.
Lama Zarsan: “Get rid of the fear in you, you are the son of the
hero of Turehot!”
Tears fill his eyes: “Master, I believe you just like my father
did!”
43.The Rear Court Room of Khan’s Palace
Bosaler whispers to the queen’s ear.
The queen jumps up: “What? He’s not dead?Hurry up, go find the
closest warriors, let them hunt Lama Zarsan down and frame those
Russians up!”
Bosaler’s voice quivers: “Your highness…I…I fear…”
The queen slaps him in the face. “You coward! If you don’t, I
will!”
Bosaler drops to his knees. “Your highness, it’s not possible to
get pass Khan! What are we gonna do after this?” He cries.
The queen takes out a gun from beneath the table and yells
hoarsely: “I don’t care about the future! Now, I want my son to
stay! Stand up and follow me!”
Bosaler shakes while picking himself up.
As gate of the palace is open, Prince Asarai stands in the
backlight.
Bosaler: “Prince?”
Prince Asarai points at Bosaler with his machete. “Ask my machete
before hurting the master!”
The queen cries: “Son, I am doing this for you! Only his death can
irritate your father! Then you can stay with me!”
Prince Asarai: “No, I can’t betray my father!”
The queen asks with tears falling: “Son, are you willing to be
their hostage!”
Prince Asarai: “Mother, a prince of Turehot, can only choose to be
a hero!”
The queen’s whole body shakes, throwing away the gun in her hand.
She stretches her arms out and cries: “Mongke Tengri! Why is my
son cursed at such a young age!”
Bosaler drops to his knees near the prince. “Prince, do you know
that your mother suffered so much!”
Prince Asarai puts his machete into the sheath and walks towards
the queen with tears rolling in his eyes.
The queen yells: “Get away! No!”
She starts to smash to destroy everything that’s in the palace…
44.Outside the camp
Raging flame burns against the evening sky.
The warriors stands with dignity and solemnity.
Behind Ubashi Khan’s seat, stands many solemn noblemen with that
tense look on their face.
Bosaler is fully tied up and is dragged to Ubashi Khan with his
hair disheveled and his body wounded.
Ubashi Khan asks indifferently: “Who is the one that’s behind
you?”
Bosaler: “Your highness, please send me to Mongke Tengri!”
Ubashi Khan pushes a bowl of wine: “Let him go.”
A warrior brings it to him.
Bosaler drinks with his mouth on the edge of the bowl, struggling
to spurt a brume of wine over the fire. “By Mongke Tengri, my poor
queen! I’m leaving one step ahead!”
Ubashi Khan stands up and walks into the tent.
A few warriors shoulder Bosaler and take him to the bonfire…
45.In the tent
The queen is staring blankly at nothing.
Ubashi Khan furiously drops the bowl with milk tea on the table
when he is just about to sip. The milk tea splashes.
The queen: “They should have burnt me too!”
Khan lowered his pitch and speaks raucously: “You do not deserve
to be a queen! The good fortune of hundreds of thousands of people
was merely destroyed by your selfishness, do you know that! ”
The queen takes off her crown and starts to unbutton her gown.
Ubashi Khan’s face is dark with rage.
The queen stands up and throws her gown away: “I will abdicate and
go to St.Petersburg with my son!”
Ubashi Khan draws his sword from his waist all of a sudden.
The queen walks out of the place, seeming as if that she doesn’t
even care.
The sword falls as the table with tea-things was cut in half.
46.Outside the tent
Red light is on the white underclothes of the queen like it’s
reddened by blood.
Osbar runs out of the crowd of nobles, half-kneels and looks up:
“Queen?”
The queen looks straightly at nothing: “You are the brother of
Khan, so you are the first to know. I am no longer the queen of
Turehot!”
Osbar shouted with rage: “What? How can Khan treat you like this?
I’ll go and ask him!”
The queen doesn’t care. She walks to a warrior on horse.
The warrior is fluttered and jumps off the horse. He kneels before
her.
The queen takes the halter and mounts on the horse. She rides the
horse, and when passing a bonfire, she takes off her bracelet and
throws it into the flame, riding off at full speed.
47.In the tent
Osbar glares at Ubashi Khan in anger.
Ubashi Khan says: “Osbar, you respect her, but was it for your own
selfish reason? Does she deserve to be the mother of the country?”
Osbar pulls out his sword and points it at Ubashi Khan. “My Khan
brother, no matter how many excuses you have, you must promise me,
that you will never get her abdicated!”
Ubashi Khan is indifferently unmoved to his sword.
Ubashi Khan shouted in a low voice: “Guards.”
Two warriors rush in and take Osbar’s machete. Osbar is pressed
down to the ground.
Osbar struggles to make a sound: “Brother, you ashamed the kind
queen. Come on! Punish me too!”
Khan says: “Get him out of here!”
Two warriors march Osbar across the tent.
48.In the Inner Chamber of Khan’s Palace
The queen is organizing her clothes, putting them in a big wooden
crate.
Bicheeg is helping her silently.
Alexander’s face is written with the word “anger”.
Abakov stamps his foot and walks around: “Foolish, foolish! You
ruined the renown of the family. Our reputation will nosedive
among the nobles.”
Bicheeg: “Abba, please don’t blame my sister, she also suffers.”
Alexander sneers: “You are pretty suasive, huh? If Khan replaces
the queen with you, we will have nothing to worry about!”
Bicheeg is irritated: “Alexander, I know I like Khan, but that is
my business!”
Bicheeg walks out in anger.
Alexander: “Sister, did you hear that? Bicheeg has some thoughts!
If Khan would like to marry her, do you agree?”
The queen acts as if she does not hear a thing.
Looking at his son and daughters arguing, Abakov’s eyes goggle.
49.In the Garden
Bicheeg stands near a clove tree, splitting the flower petal by
petal.
Abakov walks to her and whispers with boldness: “Bicheeg, what
your brother said is actually…kind of plausible. For our family”s
reputation, I will go and see Khan!”
Bicheeg turns around. Watching the fat body of her father, she
wants to say something but she does not.
50.In the Tent of the Camp
Abakov smiles obsequiously: “Oh, my kind Khan, this is possibly a
way! Nothing will ever change, I will ask the nobles not to make
any more trouble, what do you think of this?”
A bowl of milk tea is poured on his face.
Abakov jumps up and runs out of the tent in hurry.
51.In Abakov’s Living room
Abakov swears angrily while cleaning his face with a towel: “This
madcap piece of shit! Can’t he remember who protected him?If it
wasn't my whole family who believes in the Orthodox, the queen
would dispatch her troops!”
Alexander says with a sense of mystery. “Abba, don’t you worry,
there is still a chance. Bicheeg is on her way by her own will.”
Abakov was shocked and surprised: “Really?”
52.On the grass land along the riverbank, Bicheeg is galloping the
horse.
53. In Khan's Palace
Ubashi Khan and Princess Bosnia both sit with the positions of
host and guest clearly shown.
Constantine sends a map to Khan’s table: “My honorable Khan, this
is where Prince Asarai lives in St.Petersburg.”
Ubashi Khan pushes the map away without even looking at it: “There
is one more thing, the queen of Turehot, will follow the Prince.”
Constantine is shocked. Staring at the princes with confusion, he
does not know how to answer Khan.
Princess Bosnia thinks for a while and smiles: “Well, this is
probably the best arrangement.”
Ubashi Khan: “Fine then, this is it. Princess Bosnia, I have to go
to the camp, so I shall not be eating with you during dinner.”
Princess Bosnia runs her eyes over the fancy palace: “Khan, the
great Khan’s palace is no better than a camp that shakes and
crumbles?”
Ubashi Khan: “Yes, I like the smell of grass.”
Ubashi Khan walks out without looking back.
Princess Bosnia is taken back, staring at his figure as if
thinking about something.
54.In the Camp
Bicheeg is on her knees quietly with anger.
A clip-clop sound. Bicheeg shakes her body because of sudden
intensity. She quickly picks up her wineskin, filling the cup with
it. After swallowing it, she takes a breath to relieve.
Ubashi Khan walks in and sits in the middle.
Ubashi Khan: “Speak.”
Bicheeg’s lips shake while tears coming out of her eyes.
Ubashi Khan: “Tears are not allowed in my camp!”
Bicheeg bites her lips: “Ok, I hide my tears!”
However, she can’t help having them running across her face.
Ubashi Khan’s tune turned a bit milder: “Fine, you are a woman,
you are forgiven.”
She indignantly sobs: “Khan, why would you humiliate me?”
Ubashi Khan answers: “Oh?Bicheeg, I never humiliate a woman
through my entire life!”
Bicheeg continues: “You know that I love you, but why would you
refuse?”
Ubashi Khan looks up at that small patch of sky above the tent.
“Bicheeg, maybe… what I rejected was Abakov’s family. Maybe..I
don’t like a woman who does not wear Mongolian gown, and a woman
who does not have that smell of grass on her, even more.”
Bicheeg takes a sword on the table and stands up.
The sharp edge of the knife slides on her dress.
The parts of her fragmentized dress start falling…until her whole
white body is exposed.
The knife drops.
Bicheeg says with crying-like voice: “Khan, you saw it, you saw
what I can do for you! Am I going to be kicked out of your tent?”
Ubashi Khan stands up quickly, hands her the gown that hangs on
the wall: “This is your sister’s, put it on!”
A satisfied smile appears on her face: “Is this your promise?”
Ubashi Khan looks away.
Bicheeg moves forward to hug him, leaving her lip print on his
locked mouth…
55.A pressing continuation of sound of hooves go on. Under the
moonlight, a few squads of horsemen run across the open country
where grass and trees of different height and density grow freely…
56. In the Inner Chamber of Batu’s Official Residence
With a horsewhip which is made of silver floss and horsehair being
whipped, a white plaster cast collapses.
Batu holds his whip tightly while bristling: “Bastard, he ashamed
Mongolians!”
Bayar runs in, knitting his eyebrows when looking at the pieces of
statue.
Batu gazes at him: “Hm?”
Bayar says in low voice and hurry: “Abba, the living room is full
of people. Some went to the woods.”
Batu walks out in anger with whip in hands.
Bayar squats down to carry the fragments in both hands. His face
twisted as the pain tortures him:
“Dotard, this is the masterpiece of the famous artist of
St.Petersburg!”
57.On the Clearing in the woods
A few torches burn in the hands of the warriors. The swaying fire
shines on no less than ten fully armored guards, who look cold and
heartless.
Batu seems to be strong and manful as before, taking big strides
to stand in the center.
Batu: “You tell me!”
Old nobleman A: “Sire, Khan is making Turehot a vassal of Russia.
We do not agree!”
Old nobleman B: “It is great humiliation for Mongloians to let the
queen be the hostage!”
Someone shouts out in the dark: “We do not want such a Khan!”
People repeat what others say: “Yes, no way…Sire, please help this
country!…”
Batu: “Fine! You people here are all members of the assemblies of
magnates.Tell me your what you are thinking!”
Old nobleman A staggers and falls to his knees: “Batu Khan!”
Batu steps back.
Everyone kneels down: “Batu Khan!”
Batu’s shaking arm goes up: “Did…did you plan this whole thing?”
They continue: “Batu Khan!”
The torches are lifted up high and the people are calling his
name: “Batu Khan! Batu Khan!……”
58.In the Inner Chamber of Batu’s Official Residence
Batu slumps down on the chair near the table with poor
consciousness, looking a lot older than before.
Bayar comes to talk to him with evident enjoyment: “They acclaimed
you Khan?”
Batu murmurs: “This is planned in advance, I… I know. You are happy
now?”
Bayar appears merry: “Abba, you are with high reputation. They
mean it!”
Batu sneers: “I am old! They are targeted at you!”
Bayer is becoming excited: “Abba, he is no better than me. I…I can
also be a Khan!”
Batu’s body starts to shake.
Bayar asks anxiously: “Abba, are you good?”
Batu points at a machete with jewelry decorations that hangs on
the wall: “Bring..bring it to me.”
Bayar takes the machete with excitement and kneels down in front
of his father. His eyes are filled with the flame of expectation.
Batu suddenly draws out the machete and then places it on his
son’s neck.
Bayar is scared: “A…Abba, what are you doing?”
The edge of the knife cuts the surface of his skin where blood
comes out.
Bayar yells as the pain gets stronger: “Abba! Abba!”
Batu: “Swear to Mongke Tengri, never betray him!”
Bayar crys: “Abba, I swear, I will never betray Ubashi Khan!”
The machete is away from his neck.
Bayar picks up a white napkin to stop his blood.
Bayar whimpers: “ Abba, you almost killed your own son!”
Batu has his tears all over his face and touches his son’s head
with his shanking hand: “Bayar, it is never easy to be a Khan, no
fun will be found.”
Bayar feels aggrieved: “Ok, then I will not be a Khan. But why
would you do such a thing?”
Batu:“Quickly, go secretly and tell Khan that those people are
going to rebel…”
59. In the light of night, Bayar climbs over the wall and falls
hard from the top of it. After picking himself up, he runs with
his hand on the neck, and staggers as if he is on cotton.
60.Outside the Gate of Abakov’s House
Bayar runs without paying attention to what he is doing that he
almost runs into a coming carriage.
Suddenly stops the carriage. Alexander gets off.
Alexander takes a gig lamp to Bayar’s face: “Why are you here
Bayar? I almost got you killed!”
Bayar ramps like an angry lion: “I had bad luck today! Come on,
lend me a horse, I got some urgent matters to deal with!”
Alexander clutches his arm tight: “Yet you have arrived at my
house, come in and chat!”
61.Abakov’s Living-room
Alexander fills Bayar’s cup with Vodka, having that foxy smile on
his face: “We are friends,so if you keep something from me, I
won’t lend you a horse!”
Bayar drinks his wine and says bitterly: “I…I can’t tell you…”
Alexander hands him another cup of wine: “Bayar, don’t you forget
it. My sister is the queen, our families are closely connected!”
Bayar gulps down his wine again: “Alright, I…I believe you!”
62.In the Inner Chamber of Abakov’s House
Bicheeg is combing and putting her makeup on in front of a mirror,
keeping a ear to what his brother is saying.
Abakov’s shivering hands help him dress himself up: “This will
change our whole family’s destiny! I must go to see Princess
Bosnia!”
Alexander asks: “But…uh…what about Khan?”
Abakov says: “Let me know what the princess says first. Coax
Bayar, don’t let him leave.”
Alexander takes a glance at Bicheeg: “That stupid passed out
drunk.”
Bicheeg’s body shakes. The comb slides down her hair all of a
sudden.
Some long hairs clung to the comb in her shaking hand…
63.On the street and in the darkness of the day, Abakov’s Russian
carriage is running at high-speed.
64.A ferry near Volga River
Under the light of a gas lamp, Bicheeg is accompanied by her
maidservant in a skin raft.
The raft goes slowly……
65.In the Capacious Presence Chamber of Princess Bosnia
In the letter which is handed over by Abakov’s trembling hands:
“Dear Princess Bosnia, as the representative of Ubashi Khan, I beg
for the armies of her majesty the queen to eliminate the rebellion
of Turehot!”
Princess Bosnia opens the envelop and takes a look halfheartedly.
“Can you represent Ubashi Khan?”
“As long as the queen dispatch her troops, I can!” Abakov says.
Constantine is greatly frightened: “Fine then, me, as the special
envoy of Supervision of the queen at Turehot, accept your
request!”
Abakov is so excited that he stands up: “Princess? You are the
supervisor of Turehot?”
Then Princess Bosnia opens a leather case, taking a gilded paper
out from it.
After looking at it, Abakov takes a deep bow: “Dear special envoy
of her majesty the queen, now I can rest my heart.”
He walks backwards and leaves the place.
As he left, Constantine quickly gets back to the princess: “My
noble princess, since when have you accepted the queen’s
commission? How…am I not supposed to be the first to know?”
Princess Bosnia smiles: “My beloved Constantine C Alexey Norwich,
I sent my request the last time I wrote to the queen. And today, I
am formally commissioned.”
Constantine asks: “My princess, you’d rather stay here…a place
full of heathens?”
Princess Bosnia: “Isn’t it good? You should feel happy for me if I
can tame a violent-tempered horse for our use!”
Constantine is disappointed: “Oh, my princess, it is my job to
take the prince under escort. I can not be around. That’s so much
pain!”
Princess Bosnia giggles: “My lovely Constantine, this is why I
kept it from you!”
66.In the Deep Grassland Outside the Camp
Ubashi Khan looks deep into the far. The masseters that seem to be
carved out on his face by knife shake slightly.
Bicheeg comes slowly and speaks in low volume: “Khan, I am going
back.”
Ubashi Khan does not look back, and replies: “Thank you, Bicheeg,
Mongolian gown looks very beautiful on you.”
Bicheeg: “I will never change into anyone else!Khan, take care of
yourself.”
She turns around and goes to the maidservant.
67.In the Camp
People shout and yell, horses roar, dust is blown by the wind.
Sometimes, fully armored squads of horsemen comes insanely at
high-speed.
The camp is getting more and more noisy that the scale seems to be
expanding.
68.In the Tent
Ubashi Khan is deep in thought by facing the portrait of Genghis
Khan.
Offscreen voice from Lama Zarsan: “Fearing nothing is great
wisdom, fearing everything is also great wisdom… Fearing nothing
is great wisdom, fearing everything is also great wisdom…”
69. Outside the Tent
Dusk has come. Suited soldiers put their heads together and
generals whisper to each other.
Behind them are some restless horses, who are about to get rid of
their reins.
Not far from here, on a fancy Russian carriage stands Princess
Bosnia. That calm smile of an observer shows on her face.
Mongolian warriors with weapons stand still.
Scouts come one by one…lining up outside the tent: “Report———!”
“Report———!”…
The commander rushes to the tent.
The warriors of the squad of guards stop him at the gate with
their swords horizontally placed.
The commander draws out his sword and chops the hitching post.
The commander shouted by clenching his teeth: “Khan! The rebels
are ready to take action! Are we waiting for them to come?”
As the fires are set, the guards leave him a road.
Ubashi Khan appears serious in front of the soldiers and generals.
All the people are actively going forward and kneeling down with
one knee: “Khan, give us the order!”
Khan announced seriously: “All of you stay here, I am going
myself.”
Khan gets on the horse.
Everyone shouts: “No! We can’t let Khan be in danger yourself!”
Ubashi Khan starts to laugh. The terrifying laughter goes so far
that even the busy warriors at the periphery of the camp stop when
they hear it…
The laughter stops. Ubashi Khan speak loudly like thunder: “I,
Ubashi Khan of Turehot, now ask all of you, are we going to end up
being destroyed by killing our own people?”
……
With Khan’s words, the sound which comes as if from the heaven
echo in the whole area to the beat of the war drum… “Answer me!
Answer me!” ……
The generals all step back to leave a path for him……
The warriors then leave a long way for him……
The war-horse’ hooves start to clip faster and faster……
The weapons of the warriors and the torches pass as fast as light…
Ubashi Khan disappear in the unbounded darkness…
Thousands of leaders and warriors call: “Kha————an!”
70.On the Riverbank of Volga River
The carriage that carries Princess Bosnia goes slowly.
She suddenly gets up: “Stop the carriage!”
The carriage brakes hard. The princess jumps off and runs to the
riverbank.
A few royal guards on horse want to follow, but are stopped by
Constantine. Constantine walks slowly to see what’s going on.
Near the river, Princess Bosnia stares still at the rolling water.
She mutters to herself: “He’s a devil, a devil…an unbelievable
devil…he really is!”
Constantine whispers near her ear: “It is absolutely right to
treat him as a devil, my princess.”
Princess Bosnia answers in great anger: “Constantine Alexey
Norwich, please leave me alone!”
Constantine steps back.
71.In the Main Hall of Khan’s Palace
In the center sit the queen and Prince Asarai. Except for them, no
one is in the place.
The gate is open, linked to a world of darkness.
Prince Asarai: “Eej(Mother), I am leaving tomorrow…but why can’t I
see father here?”
The queen’s lips shake.
Bicheeg breaks into the palace, shocked when seeing them. She is
about to speak, but saying nothing.
The queen asks: “What’s wrong?”
Bicheeg says: “Queen, maybe you are the only one who can save Khan
now!”
Prince Asarai: “What happened to father?”
Bicheeg clutches the prince’s hands: “Prince, beg your mother for
help, they’re betraying your father under the name of your
mother!”
Prince Asarai looks at his mother in the eye: “Eej(mother), is it
true? Who dare to betray my father?”
The queen turns around without speaking anything.
Bicheeg drops to her knees in front of the queen.
Prince Asarai draws out his sword from his waist and rushes into
the dark night…
The queen gets up astonished from her throne and goes after him:
“My son, don’t go!”
72.The Camp of Rebellion in A Birch Forest
Sparks scatter around the place. Between the woods, shadows of
people flicker.
Ubashi Khan gets down from a horse and goes forward.
Some rebels come out of the woods and stop Khan with their swords.
Ubashi Khan shouts: “Take a close look, I am your Khan!”
A torch lights up his face.
The warriors of the rebel army all kneel down.
Ubashi Khan walks away haughtily.
73.In the Tent of Rebel Army
More than ten leaders of the rebel army stand up fearfully. They
draw out their swords and seem to be ready to rush out.
Ubashi Khan blocks the doorway of the tent. Behind him are the
burning torches. It looks like his body is on raging fire.
Ubashi Khan looses his broadsword and throw it to their feet.
The leaders all leave a road for him.
Ubashi Khan goes to the seat in the center and sits with his head
up.
Old nobleman A says with a shaking voice: “You…you are not allowed
to sit there…it belongs to Batu Khan!”
Ubashi Khan sneers: “Do we have a “Batu Khan” in Turehot? Where is
he?”
Old nobleman A: “He…he will come soon!”
Ubashi Khan stands up unexpectedly. Then he holds his breastplate.
“Pong!” break the breastplate. He throws it without consideration.
The chair behind him is bashed down.
The leaders all stand back.
74.In the Forest full of People and Horses
Batu enters the place with Bayar aside.
The rebels hasten out of their way.
Walking into the tent, he whispers: “Bayar, hold my arm.”
Bayar helps support his father’s body while Batu sink his body on
purpose.
75.In the Tent of Rebellion
Ubashi Khan pats on his chest: “Come on! Stab your Mongolian
machete into my chest, so you can have a new Khan! And then?
Turehot will destroy itself! Come on, you bastards who look for
self-destruction, stab it in here!”
Batu says in his elderly voice: “Move, I am here.”
The leaders all turn around immediately as they hear his voice.
Excitedly they go and pay respects to him: “Batu Khan, you are
finally here!”
Batu pushes his son away. He struggles to stable his shaky body.
Batu says with his shaky voice: “Do not call me Khan! There has
always been one Khan, him! My brothers that I trust the most, my
children, he is right, we Mongolians shouldn't be fighting against
our own people anymore! I am too old, that my legs are worn. I
can’t lead you and fight with you anymore. So, let him lead all of
us, and seek for the only peace that’s left!”
There are still leaders calling “Batu Khan”.
Batu stops them by waving his hands: “No more, I know, your
calling “Khan” is all fake. Whom you really needed, is him!”
He kneads his son’s shoulders with his fingers. Bayar crumples
down onto the ground.
Batu: “ Look, my poor son is so weak. Can he burden all these?I
know, I know, you all want a puppet, to satisfy the greed of each
family!”
Bayar cries: “Let go of me! I just wanted to live a happy life, I
never wanted to be a Khan!”
Batu: “Mongke Tengri has given us the warning. The grasslands near
Volga is no longer heaven! The lonely lion is being hunted by a
strong hunter. What can we get from a dead lion? My brothers and
children, think about it!”
Old nobleman A’s machete in his hand hangs down.
Others are starting to put their machetes back.
A lead of the rebel army shoulders his way to the front by waving
his machete and gets to Ubashi Khan: “Don’t listen to this old
coward’s bullshit! Overbearing and arrogant Ubashi Khan, you must
die!”
Some try to stop him as the leader struggles to go at Ubashi Khan…
The knifepoint is getting close to Ubashi Khan’s chest directly…
The leader’s ferocious face turns frozen all of a sudden…
A machete is stabbed in his back…
He looks back painfully and falls down onto the ground.
Prince Asarai’s eyes are filled with anger and panic.
The rest of the leaders are driven by trained reflex that they all
put their machetes up.
Behind them, shouts the queen: “Stop it!”
The leaders turn around at the same time and kneel with their
swords supporting their bodies: “Queen!”
The queen shouts angrily: “You betray him by my name? You people
have no idea, he send us to be the hostages, yes, but it is all for
the people in Turehot, including you!”
Ubashi Khan turns away and throws back his head to laugh out loud.
It sounds more like crying…
The commander and the guarding squad of Ubashi Khan rushes in,
placing their machetes on the leaders” necks.
The commander says: “Kill the ones who betray Khan!”
More than ten machetes are raised up high.
Ubashi Khan turns around suddenly: “Leave them alive, give them a
chance to redeem themselves.”
Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent arrogantly.
76. Outside the Tent
The torches light up the place. Countless warriors yell out with
their knees down on the ground: “Ubashi Khan! Ubashi Khan!…”
77.In Khan’s Palace
The throne that’s set in the center is taken away.
On the two sides of a long and narrow aulic table, sit Ubashi Khan
and Princess Bosnia face to face.
Ubashi Khan: “Princess Bosnia, now that I handed over my queen and
prince, you can deliver the message to Queen Catherine.”
Princess Bosnia: “My beloved Khan, you should call me ‘the special
envoy of supervision of the queen at Turehot’ !”
Ubashi Khan stands up: “If you have no orders, then I am leaving
for the camp!”
She calls angrily: “Ubashi Khan, stop!”
Ubashi Khan looks at her in a funny way.
Princess Bosnia tries to look away from his sight, opening the
rescript and starting reading it: “Under the name of Her Majesty
the Queen, and for the victory in the war against the Ottoman
Empire, I now command you, Ubashi Khan, to gather all the warriors
in Turehot, and lead them to the west battlefield immediately!”
Ubashi Khan asks: “Before we shed our blood, what do you have?”
The princess takes the book of list of military supply to Ubashi
Khan: “Her Majesty the Queen is always generous and kind. For this
war, enough military supply is well prepared!”
She puts the book on the table.
Ubashi Khan puts his hand heavily on the hand of the princess
which stays unmoved on the book. Ubashi Khan: “I accept!”
She looks at him with tenderness: “Khan, I have strong reasons for
believing in you!”
80.In the Tent of the Camp
No less than ten leaders crowd the place to stare quietly.
Under the portrait of Genghis Khan, Ubashi Khan says with great
dignity: “For the future of Turehot, we need good preparation. In
this expedition, no leader, not even the old and the disabled,
should stay behind!”
81.On the Opening Grassland
Morning fog cover the whole place under the dark sky which seems
lower than usual.
Ubashi Khan is sitting with the princess on a carriage to review
the Mongolian troops.
Everyone shouts loudly: “Ubashi Khan! Ubashi Khan!”
Princess Bosnia frowns and asks: “My beloved Khan, why are there
so many weak people in your army?”
Khan glares at her cruelly: “Poor woman, you have no idea about we
Mongolians! In the battleground, a Mongolian warrior without legs
and arms can kill the enemy with their teeth!”
Princess Bosnia is astonished by taking the sauce.
Tens of thousands of blades pierce through the fog.
The shouting is as loud as thunder: “Ubashi Khan…Ubashi Khan!……”
82. The Mongolian Troops are Ongoing in Heavy Rain
Countless old people and women stand on hillside to see the
warriors off. It is hard to tell whether heir faces are covered
with tears or rain drops…
The sad Mongolian long-tune “Genghis Khan Steed” goes on, along
with lightning flashing and thunder rumbling, as if the sky falls…
83. Outside the Castle of Khanate of Kazan
Many military tents. Groups of soldier is sitting around the fire
and engorging.
Ubashi Khan passes through them in great anger, followed by a few
leaders
84.In the Camp of Military Supply
Stuffs pile up. Some people are still busy disburdening the carts.
Kazan Khan smiles like a toady, visiting the place with Princess
Bosnia.
Ubashi Khan’s face is dark in rage, appearing right in front of
them.
Kazan Khan is scared that he wants to step back.
Ubashi Khan calls: “Bring me the thing!”
A few quartermasters bring some armors with stains and rusts.
Ubashi Khan doubts and gnashes: “This is what you call “we shed
our blood for” ?
Kazan Khan says: “There is always an exception. You shouldn't pick
on us!”
A quartermaster heads for another pile of stuff and then takes the
cloth away to uncover it.
As he holds a blanket in both his hands to the princess, a rat
runs out of it and jumps on the princess’ feet.
Princess Bosnia screams.
The quartermaster shakes it to let it get full spread. Dust flies
everywhere and some holes on it are clearly shown.
Kazan Khan speaks in a shaky voice: “This is sent by Her Majesty
the Queen’s quartermasters, it is none of my business!”
Princess Bosnia reproaches: “How dare you humiliate the holy
queen!”
Ubashi Khan sneers and gestures.
A few beast-like warriors come out of nowhere and take down Kazan
Khan and his guards.
Kazan Khan screams: “Princess Bosnia, this is insurgence!”
Ubashi Khan stares at Princess Bosnia: “Let him give all the
treasure and the best equipments to us, or we will not start a
war!”
Princess says in a tone of resentment to Kazan Khan: “Let you
people work on it, honorific Khan, for her majesty’s orders, you
should sacrifice everything!”
Ubashi Khan says: “Send your son here under escort, let me teach
him how to fight like a Mongolian!”
Kazan Khan beseeches the princess: “He want my son to be a
hostage?”
Princess Bosnia: “Khan, do not fear, maybe your son can really
learn a lot from him.”
85.In Ubashi Khan’s Tent
Each hand of the almost naked Ubashi Khan holds a rock dumbbell,
which is parallel to the ground. His knees are slightly bent.
Two warriors whip him with whips soaked in butter.
Ubashi Khan’s whole body is of red color. His muscles swell.
The princess’ voice-over: “Please allow me to visit Ubashi Khan!”
Ubashi Khan answers: “Let her in!”
Princess Bosnia wanders into the tent, looking surprised at what
she sees.
Khan moves his head to let the guards leave.
Two warriors leave.
Ubashi Khan’s hands cut loose from the rock dumbbells.
Princess Bosnia: “My beloved Khan, I am here to express my
sorrow.”
Ubashi Khan doubts: “How do I know that you're sincere?”
Princess Bosnia is not afraid of his eyes: “Khan, if you are
willing to be a fierce lion of Queen Catherine, I would do
anything to show my sincerity!”
Ubashi Khan touches her face provocatively…
There appears to be the flame of passion in her eyes: “Khan, as
long as you know how to appreciate…”
Ubashi Khan burst into cachinnation, picking up the princess and
walking into the inner chamber of the tent.
The veil falls from the ceiling. Two crazy shapes of body show in
the indistinct……
86.The Camp under the Curtain of Night
The clip-clops of the horse go on. A soldier who keeps watch walks
by. Everything is in peace.
Voiceover of Princess Bosnia: “Maybe I should stay here to watch
you.”
Voiceover of Ubashi Khan: “No, I reject having a woman in the
bloody battlefield!”
Princess Bosnia: “Are you afraid of woman?”
Ubashi Khan: “Yes, woman is devil, for she eats up all of
courage!”
Princess Bosnia’s titters……
87.On the Opening Ground of Battlefield
Roaring cannonballs bomb as they hit the ground.
Mongolian horsemen charge forward in the rain of bullets. A man
falls, then the horse……
In the trench, Turkey snipers shoot row by row…
Another turn of charging…a horse without its master is losing his
way…wounded battle horses are twitching…dying soldiers are
struggling…
Gun smoke and dead bodies are everywhere…
88.The Military Command on the Sidehill
A Russian leader with a full beard speaks loudly at Ubashi Khan
after observing the battlefield with his monocular: “You
Mongolians are useless! Useless!”
Ubashi Khan says in cold and dead voice: “Where are those three
thousand Turkish uniforms? Give them to me now!”
The Russian leader jeers: “Ubashi Khan, if they are not for
surrender, they are absolutely for your crafty plots! Turkish
uniforms? What do you need them for?”
Ubashi Khan: “Make your decision! Or I will withdraw my troop!”
The Russian hesitates for a second and tells the military officer
aside: “Give him what he wants, those of the prisoners, and the
bodies, all of them!”
89.In the Valley
An amount of soldiers that covers the mountain is resting.
A commander gives orders while walking through the soldiers: “You,
you and you, assemble there…”
A few weak and partly disabled soldiers stagger to the place.
90.Around the Mountain Pass
At dusk, thousands of partly disabled soldiers are dressed in
Turkish uniforms and lined up in messy rows.
Ubashi Khan walks slowly by, sometimes patting on the shoulders of
the soldiers.
The soldiers all throw a look of pride and appreciation……
91.In the Woods on the Sidehill
Gas lamp lights up the face of a few seriously standing Mongolian
leaders.
Osbar half kneels in front of Ubashi Khan, sticking out his hands
to get Khan’s machete
Ubashi Khan: “Break up the whole into parts before dawn, and get
out of the battlefield! Swear to Mongke Tengri, that you will take
all the elites of Turehot back!”
The leaders all kneels down: “We swear!”
Osbar looks up at Khan: “Khan, what about you? Can those eight
thousand weak soldiers protect you?”
Ubashi Khan: “If I am blessed by Mongke Tengri, I will win by
using a clever strategy. If not, you will ascend the throne, and
follow the guide of Master Zarsan, find a path for Turehot!”
Osbar: “Khan!”
Khan beckons with his hand: “Move now, I need to get back to the
Russian command. They feel upset when I am not around!”
Ubashi Khan turns around and takes big steps to walk away.
92.In the Military Command of Russian Army
Chaos. Many people are ready for withdrawal.
Staff officers come one by one to report: “Turkish riders have
broken the Mongolian line of defense at night!”…… “Mongolian
troops’ defense collapsed!” …… “Turkish infantry is going across the
Mongolian line of defense!”……
The Russian leader stamps about in a frenzy: “I will kill that
heathen myself!”
Russian military policemen send Ubashi Khan in under escort.
The leader takes out his gun and let the gunpoint stay glued to
Ubashi Khan’s forehead: “Let your bastards fight back, or I will
shoot you!”
Ubashi Khan says coldly: “Can’t you wait until dawn? If you have
never seen daylight in a war, it is your pity!”
The Russian leader: “What…what do you mean?”
Ubashi Khan shouts: “Take your gun, pick up your guts, and go with
me to the battlefront command!”
93.The Military Command on the Sidehill
Cannonballs that goes across the sky scream in a sad tone.
They bomb everywhere that eyesight covers.
A few monoculars aim at the smoky place.
The Russian leader holds his gun in the holster, and repeats the
same action: drawing it out and putting it in……he murmurs himself:
“If this heathen set me up, I will kill him myself, immediately,
yeah, immediately……”
In the corner, Ubashi Khan rests with his eyes closed under the
eyes of the soldiers.
Staff officer A yells: “Turkeys stop marching, they reeled!”
Staff officer B shouts with surprise: “They fell into Mongolians’
ambush!”
Then, more good news come: “Turkish defense line collapsed!” “They
are totally disordered!” “It’s time for us to fight back!”……
The Russian leader steps forward and holds his monocular up high
and speaks loudly: “Issue my order! Start our counterattack!”
94.In the valley, on the opening field, in the trenches
Bullets scream, cannonballs fall, gun smoke is everywhere……
Turkish troops retreat……
Russians pursue and attack……
95.In the Russian Command
The Russian leader holds a cup of wine and laughs: “Sly Mongolian,
I will ask Her Majesty the Queen to record your contribution!”
Ubashi Khan pours the wine to draw a line between him and the
Russian leader.
The leader looks astonished and irritated.
Ubashi Khan:“My whole army is tired. We don’t need any more
rewards, the only thing we hope now is leaving the battlefield!”
Staff officer whispers to the Russian leader: “Commander, there
are only a thousand Mongolian soldiers that are ready to be
organized.”
The Russian leader hesitates for a while and a slight degree of
sadness shows on his face: “Ubashi Khan, I know how you feel, for
the dead Mongolian soldiers, I permit it!”
96.On Top of the Hill
In the sparse woods, stand many cheerful soldiers.
A commander swathed in bandages stands with dignity by supporting
his body with a spear.
Ubashi Khan holds a silver bowl of wine and pour the wine to the
sky, to the earth and he then kneels down slowly.
All the soldiers behind his follows him.
Ubashi Khan: “My nine thousand warriors, I took you to the
battlefield when you are wounded and disabled. Now, only your
spirits go back with me. I, Ubashi Khan, swear to Mongke Tengri, I
will find the everlasting peace by the opportunity you gave us
with your life sacrificed! If I break my word, I shall go to
hell!”
97.On the Cliff
Osbar and a few leaders raise their heads and look.
The leader who holds a monocular shouts suddenly: “I saw Khan!”
Osbar and others all run down the mountain pass near the cliff
excitedly.
98.In the Valley
Osbar and others all kneel down to wait.
Ubashi Khan gets down from the horse angrily: “Osbar! Why are you
here?”
Osbar: “I can’t rest my heart, so I left a elite squad here. They
will save Khan if necessary!”
Ubashi Khan grits his teeth: “You disobey my orders Osbar! You
will never lead troops!”
Osbar gets up suddenly: “Khan, that’s what I’ve been waiting for!
Now at least one thing is allowed!”
Ubashi khan glances at him coldly: “I know what you’re thinking!”
Osbar: “Yes, I will take a few warriors with me and protect queen
and prince!”
Ubashi Khan thinks about it for a while and speaks slowly: “Autumn
has come, the grass’ color has changed, there is no much time left!
She takes care of you, you respect her. You are allowed. Bring
them back before winter!”
Osbar kneels down again: “Khan, I promise with my life, I will
never let queen and prince get hurt!”
99.Khan’s Palace
The palace is decorated and painted in Mongolian style, totally
different from what it used to be.
Craftsmen and servants are busy fiddling with the new stuffs.
100.In the Audience Hall of Khan’s Palace
A feast is ready.
Bicheeg, dressed in the clothes a queen wears, is giving orders to
the servants, letting them put wine sets in the right place.
101.Princess Bosnia’s Residence
A Mongolian band is playing with both Mongolian and European
instruments.
Princess Bosnia, dressed in Mongolian clothes, is learning
Mongolian dance and dancing along to the music.
A female Mongolian drillmaster claps her hands to show her joy.
The warriors that are watching look cheerful.
Horse-clips come closer to the place. Soon, Constantine, who looks
fatigued and worn, rushes in and is shocked by what he sees.
Princess Bosnia is happy to see him coming: “Oh, Constantine Alexy
Norwich, it is so good to see you!”
Constantine speaks with a shaky voice while kissing the back of
her hand: “Princess, I miss you everyday. I am finally back!”
Princess Bosnia: “Queen sends you back?”
Constantine straightens up a little bit and appears to be serious:
“Yes, your highness, the holy queen has a secret message for you.”
She gestures to let the band quiet down and walks into the room.
102. In the Living-room of the Residence
The princess is reading the queen’s letter.
Constantine frowns at her Mongolian dress: “My noble princess, as
our high command investigated , Ubashi Khan used only his weak
soldiers, all the elites were back to Turehot!”
Princess Bosnia puts down the letter: “There is nothing wrong
about this! Ubashi Khan used the few to defeat the many and help
us win. Doesn’t it show how good a tactician he is?”
Constantine: “Princess, don’t be naive. Our queen doubts that, she
thinks that he is hatching an evil plan!”
Princess Bosnia: “Constantine Alexy Norwich, it is very common for
our queen to suspect a heathen. Still, I hope you don’t dramatize
it.”
Constantine: “You shouldn’t trust that sly Mongolian!”
Princess Bosnia: “It is beyond argument that, according to Her
Majesty the Queen’s orders, I should suspect him, but my job is to
turn him into a strong lion, make him obey the queen, and she will
never have to doubt again!”
Constantine speaks with disappointment: “Ah, my dear princess,
seeing from your eyes, I think they are filled with the fire of
expectation. I guess you are so mild to him…why? And your
heathen’s clothes, do we have to ingratiate him?”
The princess suddenly turns into rage: “Constantine, you are not
allowed to speak to me like this!”
Constantine puts his hands in the air and looks up. “Oh my god,
please let us find out the evidence that he is sly!”
103. On the Grassland near Volga River
Ubashi Khan whips up his horse to go fast, far away from his
guarding squad……
104.Temple
In front of the golden statue of Sakyamuni.
Ubashi Khan puts his palms together with his eyes closed.
Lama Zarsan walks out from the curtains, sitting aside.
Ubashi Khan: “Master, after such long journey, I have my strong
and loyal armies, what about the future?Where shall I go?”
Lama Zarsan puts a thread-bund map in front of him.
Ubashi Khan holds and says: “Mongolian grassland? Isn’t it our
home two hundred years ago?”
Lama Zarsan speaks in a desolate tone: “Yes, the name ‘Mongolian’
has never left the battlefield from the very beginning. How strong
were we! However, the grasslands are now close to peace. That
place is still our homeland!”
Ubashi Khan seems to be very excited: “Master, another branch of
Turehot has been fighting against the Qing for hundreds of years.
Will they accept us?”
Lama Zarsan: “There is no hatred that can’t be stopped. As long as
the spirits at peace are not disturbed, we will be safe and sound
on that grassland.”
Ubashi Khan has tears covered his face: “Master, I now understood.
We conquered the world, and we are also conquered by the world.
Our fate is now in our hands!”
Lama Zarsan: “Go, Khan, there will not be many banquets for
victory after this. Let them celebrate you one more time!”
105.In Khan’s Palace
In the corner, more than ten music masters are playing horse head
fiddle.
The sound of the fiddles is like a great army of horses thundering
across the land. It brings the banquet to the climax.
Under many huge pendent lamps, along with the dance of some young
people, many Mongolian leaders and nobles, and even the royal
guards join the rhythmic shouts.
Princess Bosnia can’t help taking part in the dancers.
The atmosphere grows hotter as if the whole roof is shaking.
Ubashi Khan’s good mood is aroused. “For Princess Bosnia’s
Mongolian dance, cheers!” H e speaks loudly.
Bicheeg, sitting aside, stands up in anger.
106.In Khan’s palace, Bicheeg is saying something to a person in
the dark……
107.Khan’s Palace
Princess Bosnia comes back to her seat while mumbling.
Ubashi Khan sits next to her. They send the bowl of wine to each
other’s mouth in comradely silence. Another wave of whoops and
hollers come.
Bicheeg keeps an eye on the top of Ubashi Khan and Princess
Bosnia.
The lamp above them tends to shake. Between the pauses of music,
the horrible sound of metal breaking can be heard……
Ubashi Khan and the princess are too excited to notice that……
The huge winging lamp……
Bicheeg yells all of a sudden: “Khan——, look up!”
Ubashi Khan looks up……the lamp falls…… the crowd yells……
The court lamp hits the ground…… Ubashi Khan holds the princess
aside on the floor, with pieces of glass on their body…..they hold
each other tightly, as if nothing is worth remembering……
Princess Bosnia whispers to his ear: “Khan, my grandfather told
me, that I have Mongolian blood running in my vein……”
Ubashi Khan laughs……
108.Outside Khan's Palace
Bicheeg has tears rolling in her eyes, standing under the light.
Constantine walks out of the place with a sour face. He shakes his
body slightly as he sees the Bicheeg, who is a few yards away from
him.
Constantine gets to her and speaks in a weird tone: “My poor
queen, maybe I am now the one who understands you the most!”
Constantine is slapped on the face.
Bicheeg is filled with anger: “This is the reward I gave you for
understanding me!”
Constantine is shocked…and then, what astonishes him more happens:
squads of Mongolian warriors with weapons march into the yard and
surround the palace……
109. On the grassland under moonlight, Ubashi Khan leads the
warriors,riding fast.
110. In front of the Tent of the Camp
The nobles and leaders of Turehot all gather around the hathpace
which is lit up by torches.
Ubashi Khan announces loudly: “Turehot should no longer be the
victim of war. For our next generations, we must leave Volga, and
be back to where our ancestors were born———Mongolian grassland!
Now, I declare: after the river is frozen, all of us, we will go
back to our homeland!”
The commander puts up his arm in bondage: “Follow Ubashi Khan, go
back to the grassland!”
The nobles and leaders: “Follow Ubashi Khan, go back to the
grassland!”
A few among the nobles have other ideas, but as they see how
others react, they have no choice but raise their hands……
111.In Khan’s Palace
Princess Bosnia shouts at the guarding warrior: “Let me see Ubashi
Khan!”
Warrior A: “Princess, Khan give us the order that he will not see
you. You are safe, when we all leave Volga, you will be free to
go!”
Princess Bosnia: “What are you planning to do?”
Warrior A: “As Khan said: ‘People in Turehot will no longer be
your tools and shields for conquering, we will be far from here,
be back to where our ancestors live———Mongolian grassland’!”
Princess Bosnia grits with tears in her eyes: “Damn it! He lied to
me! He lied!……”
Constantine: “My princess……”
She answers back by give him a slap on the face and yells: “It is
ridicule for me if you speak!”
Constantine bury his face in his hands and sighs: “This day shall
be remembered forever———my face is slapped by two arrogant
ladies!”
112.Abakov’s living-room
Abakov sitting on the chair, dejected.
Alexander holds a goblet and drinks up. He claps his hands: “We’re
having a good life here, why are we leaving? Should we just
abandon all these things without considering? Ubashi Khan is a
dumb ass! I am not leaving, this is my home, I will never leave!”
Abakov murmurs: “He has his own reason, we either. We are the sons
of Virgin Marry. We are different from them, different!”
Alexander: “Father, you have to figure a way out to tell the
Russians, we must stop him!”
Abaov: “If you stop them, there will be war. It is hard to tell
who is your friend during a battle. We won't have good days then!”
Alexander: “So what do we do? What if he takes his the whole army
with him…ok, even we stayed, can we be forgiven by those
Russians?”
Abakov stands up suddenly. “Save Princess Bosnia!”
Alexander: “Right! This is a good idea! Father, I’ll be on my
way!”
Abakov: “Let me do it. At least I am the father of the queen!”
113. On the north riverbank of Volga River
Many herdsmen drive their cattle and sheep here to set up some
tents. The riverbank looks more prosperous than before……
114.In the Inner Chamber of Batu’s Residence
Bayar keeps crying.
Batu fondles his head and says: “My child, do not cry, we
Mongolians are born to live in the yurt. You will get used to it!”
Bayar cries even louder.
115.On the south riverbank of Volga
Ubashi Khan prays as he stares at the running river.
Voiceover: “Mongke Tengri, let the river be frozen soon, my people
in the north are counting on your mercy!”
116. Temple
A lamp fueled by sheep oil shines. Lama Zarsan sits under the seat
of the golden statue Sakyamuni. He fiddles with beads while
reciting scriptures.
117.Outside Khan’s Palace
Abakov and two maidservants who hold lunch boxes get off the
carriage.
The guards stop them from going in.
Abakov shows him a golden medal: “This is the medal Khan bestowed
upon my family. In Turehot’s territory , there is no place I can’t
enter!”
The guard hesitates.
Abakov pats on his shoulder: “My kid, I am commissioned by Khan,
to send these food to Princess Bosnia. You all know, Khan likes
her very much.”
The guard moves out of his way.
118.In the Inner Chamber of Khan’s Palace
Abakov speaks quietly to the princess: “Princess, I am here to
rescue you. Come and switch your clothes with my servants, I will
take you out!”
119.In the Garden of Abakov’s House
In the morning, Princess Bosnia walks down the carriage.
Alexander bows: “My honorable princess, I would love to take you
back to St.Petersburg, on my own!”
“No stop on the way, we leave right now!” She says.
Alexander runs away quickly: “Ok, I will go and prepare!”
Princess Bosnia suddenly feels sick and throws up, leaning on the
carriage.
A maidservant supports her body: “Princess, let me get you some
rest.”
Princess Bosnia shakes her head: “No need, I’ve been feeling like
this for days.”
The maidservant observes her for a second, and laughs: “Princess,
aren’t you pregnant? When our queen has her baby, she acts just
like you!”
Princess Bosnia grasps the clothe on her chest: “Huh?”
120.Camp
Far from here, a few horsemen are coming forward in high speed.
121. In front of Ubashi Khan’s Tent
Prince Asarai falls down hard after getting off the horse.
The guard tries to raise him. However, the prince tries hard as he
gets up from the ground.
Ubashi Khan trots out of the tent to see what is going on. When he
sees the prince, he looks very astonished.
Prince Asarai goes at Khan’s feet: “Father, I didn’t let you down!
I am back like a hero!”
Ubashi Khan squads down and raises his son: “My son, you did not
fail me!”
Prince Asarai cries: “Father, I used the drug that Lama Zarsan
gave me, to get the guards poisoned. We’ve been hunted along the
way. Mother and Osbar, for saving me……they all died!”
Ubashi Khan almost lifts his son with his one hand, and shouts in
a low voice: “No Mongolian warrior cries!I am Ubashi Khan, you are
my son, your mother is the queen, Osbar is my brother, this is
your destiny! No tears could change all this!”
Prince Asarai holds his tears back: “Father, uncle Osbar told me,
he received the message that Russians are sending their troops
here. And…Kazakhstan is also on their way!”
Ubashi Khan nods his head: “They are not fools, this has finally
come!”
122.A Road that Leads to the North
Alexander and a few servants are in a fast carriage, sending
Princess Bosnia back to Russia under protection.
123.In the Tumbling Carriage
The princess can’t stop puking.
The maidservant shakes her head as if she can’t deal with this:
“You are really pregnant!”
Princess Bosnia stares blankly with her face up.
The maidservant looks at her in sympathy.
Princess Bosnia yells suddenly: “Stop the carriage!”
It stops.
Alexander puts his head into the window: “My princess, what is
your order?”
Princess Bosnia yells hysterically: “Go back! I want to see Ubashi
Khan!”
124.In the Tent of the Camp
Many leaders sit under it, looking nervously at Ubashi Khan.
Ubashi Khan unslings the portrait of Genghis Khan from behind,
handing it to a warrior near him.
He turns around and says: “The troops are coming, there is no time
for us to hang around, we must go now!”
Leader A: “Khan, what about the people on the north riverbank?”
Ubashi Khan looks up and sighs: “The river does not freeze, I am
afraid Mongke Tengri is going to leave them here!”
The commander: “The people in the north are mainly led by Abakov’s
family, most of them believe in Russian Orthodoxy. I believe that
the Russians will not harm them.”
The leaders stand up simultaneously. “Khan, we follow your lead!”
Ubashi Khan announces loudly: “Gather all the people on the south
bank, after praying at Volga River, we will head for the southern
east in three troops!”
125.On the South Bank of Volga River
Flags billow, smoke swirls, fire rages.
On the sacrificial altar placed beef, mutton and other stuffs.
Countless Mongolian warriors face the north riverbank on horse in
an array.
The floating pieces of ice move slightly as the water in the
middle goes crazy……
126. In the Tent
Princess Bosnia clutches Ubashi Khan’s clothe and cries hard:
“Ubashi Khan, how can you treat me like this, I have a baby in
me!”
Bicheeg looks at all this beside with a complex look.
Ubashi Khan’s face is ghastly pale: “Cruelty for you, but mercy
for my people.”
Princess Bosnia: “You are a demon!”
She raises her hand to hit him but her arm is caught.
Ubashi Khan shouts: “Take her away!”
A few warriors takes her away.
Ubashi Khan looks at Bicheeg: “Her is all yours, take good care!”
Bicheeg nods her head as if feeling aggrieved.
127. On the North Riverbank of Volga River
On the mud kneels many people…..
One’s cry falls, another’s cry rises: “Merciful Khan, you can’t
leave us here!”
Wintry blast roars, cries shake the ground……
128.On the South Riverbank of Volga River
The indistinct sound of the people on the other side can be heard
from here. The old people and children in the south cry as they
hear it.
Ubashi Khan kneels before the sacrificial altar and holds a silver
cup up high and prays: “Mongke Tengri, thank you for giving the
grasslands of Volga River to us, so that we are bred and fed in
the past two hundred years! From now on, I, Ubashi Khan, by
following your spiritual instructions, will take the people of
Turehot out of this land; Mongke Tengri, I implore your protection
of the people on our way home, I implore your blessing, also for
the people on the north bank!”
The wine poured in the sky has turned into steam as soon as it
meets the strong wind……
After the sounds of cannon, Ubashi Khan has his machete down.
The whole army starts moving……
Lele cattle carts go one after one……
Cows, horses and sheep run……
129.On the North Riverbank
Cries can’t be heard anymore and everything gets peaceful.
People near the river stand still like statues…….
Pieces of snow fall on their heads, faces and bodies……
Batu totters down the road with a few servants who carry a skin
raft after him……
Cracking the ice, they put the raft in the water and let Batu be
in it. Batu murmurs as if talking to himself: “I am old now. Let
me get back to the place in my dream…….I am old, too old……”
Two servants begin to row. The raft slowly goes to the center of
the river……
130.On the river, the raft bumps……
A big piece of floating ice hits the raft. The skin raft is jabbed
and start to shrink and sink……
Batu opens his arms to the sky, praying in his heart before he is
buried by water……
Sad voiceover of Bayar: “Father———!”
After the echo, the people on the north bank sing the Mongolian
folk song of sadness “Golden Land” together: “Golden land, where
Yimin River runs; only you, who give us hope and strength……”
Snow falls. Tragic song……Faces with solemnity……
131. On the South Riverbank of Volga River
Ubashi Khan stops his horse and stares at the north. The muscles
of his face shake, tears come out of his eyes……Jumping off the
horse and walking into the water that overflows his waist, Ubashi
Khan cuts the beads that loops around his neck and throws the
loosened beads to the river that runs in ferocity, covered with
snow……
132. In front of the Temple
Some warriors drop to their knees before Ubashi Khan’s horse.
Warrior B: “Khan, at the moment we start our journey, master
passed away!”
Ubashi Khan gets down from the horse, kneeling down with his palms
put together…..
133. Flame goes up in wind and snow, as the beam column falls down
all of a sudden……
134.Massive dunes stretches in every direction as far as the eye
can see. A long troop of migrants are walking in snow with
difficulty.
Princess Bosnia, on a horse, stares blankly.
The prince of Khanate of Kazan, Shevchenko comes close to her and
rides beside her horse.
Princess Bosnia gives a glance: “You?”
Prince Shevchenko: “Yes, I am still a hostage!”
The princess smiles grimly.
Prince Shevchenko tries to lower his voice: “Princess, my
honorable princess, ask Khan for a favor to let me go!”
She shakes her head powerlessly: “ Now that you are a hostage, he
will now let you go.”
He gnashes his teeth in anger: “For the queen, you should kill
him!”
Princess Bosnia is shocked.
Prince Shevchenko: “If you take his token, I can get you out of
here!”
The princess is in deep thought.
The prince looks around, then puts a small knife in her hands:
“Listen, when you hear the hoot of owl, it means I am waiting for
you!”
She shakes her body slightly and hides the knife under the hem of
her gown.
The prince smiles as if satisfied, whipping the horse to go.
135.The commander rides parallel to Ubashi Khan’s horse
The commander: “Khan, we are too slow, and the whole line is 10
mile long. Once Cossack riders attack us, we have no ability to
fight back!”
Ubashi Khan sighs: “Cows and sheep is everything to us herdsmen.
How do we persuade them to abandon them?”
The commander: “Anyone who keeps cows and sheep, get beheaded!”
Ubashi Khan: “It has only been ten days since we left Volga River.
If we let them give up everything, they are going to regret.”
The commander: “Khan, do we have to shed blood to let people know
what’s going on?”
Ubashi Khan looks at him: “Isn’t all this what we exchanged with
blood? Gather the elites, let them patrol, and protect the
people!”
136.At night, camp is in peace. Campfires shine here and there.
137.In the Yurt
Bicheeg and Princess Bosnia are eating quietly face to face.
Princess Bosnia: “Let me be with Khan for one night.”
Bicheeg gives a look at her belly and does not know what to say.
Princess Bosnia stands up: “I am going!”
Looking at her back, Bicheeg loses her smile.
138.In the Long Valley
Cossacks are ready to go.
In front of a bonfire, a few leaders of Cossack are drinking a
toast.
Leader A: “For killing a frozen snake close to death, cheers!”
They all laugh and drink.
Constantine and a few royal guards walk in.
Constantine: “Give me a hundred cavalrymen, I am going to save
Princess Bosnia!”
Leader A: “You do it yourself! She is surrounded by Ubashi Khan’s
best warriors. It is not our duty to suffer any loss for that
princess who lost her dignity!”
Constantine thinks for a while: “Fine then, as long as you don’t
stop hunting the Mongolians, they will collapse one day! By then,
I will do it myself!”
Leader A drops the empty bottle on the ground and draws out the
sword and waves it.
Cossack Riders rush out of the valley, shaking the ground.
139.In Ubashi Khan’s Yurt
Ubashi Khan is asleep.
Princess Bosnia quietly gets up, taking out the knife and leans
beside Ubashi Khan. A gas lamp that hangs on the ceiling lights up
their faces……
The knife is raised above Ubashi Khan’s chest……
Suddenly the princess’s body shakes. She gives up and lies down,
putting her hand on her belly……
Tears roll over her eye corner……
140. The camp is in peace. The patrolling squad of riders go
further. A few hoots of owl breaks the quietness.
141.In Ubashi Khan’s Yurt
The cries of owl is as though with magical power that stimulate
people’s eardrums……
Princess Bosnia lean to one side and closes her eyes, raising the
knife once again……
Horses come back with loud noise.
Ubashi Khan suddenly wakes up and gets ready to rush out as he
reaches out for his machete.
“Clinking” drops the knife in the copper basin near the shakedown.
Ubashi Khan looks back immediately, kicking away the basin when he
sees the knife.
Princess Bosnia sits up, as if nothing happens.
Ubashi Khan comes close to her and kisses her forehead: “My
princess, you can’t treat me like this. Behold, hundreds of
thousands of poor people are counting on me! Sleep, in this yurt,
no one can harm you!”
Ubashi Khan walks out.
Gunshots, horse-clips, shouts, cries fade in and out……
The exhausted Princess Bosnia buries her head in her arms and
falls down……
142.Squads of Cossack Rider Rush into the Camp
Horses, cows and sheep go insanely out of control……
Crying children and women run ……
Dead Mongolian warrior under a Cossack rider’s blade lies on the
ground after an unprepared battle……
Mongolian warriors fight against Cossacks by the brightness of
campfires……
Rampaging Cossack riders go across the camp and kill without
consideration……
143.On a Plain Covered with Snow
At early daybreak, Prince Shevchenko rides his horse and waves his
hands as if mad: “I am free! I am free! ……”
144.Camp on Snow
In the morning, Ubashi Khan and leaders make an inspection tour on
horse.
It is totally a miserable condition, a pitiful view……dead
bodies……bodies of horse, sheep and cows……fallen tents and
yurts……broken Lele cattle carts……scared and numb women, children
and elders……
The commander: “Khan, east branch and west branch are under
attack, the loss is big!”
Ubashi Khan: “We will be facing greater danger if we enter Kazakh
Khanate! Tell my people, kill all the sheep, leave all the heavy
things behind. Anyone that have the ability to walk, can’t be in a
cart, all the carts and carriages are for food!”
145.Cossack Camp in the Woods
The sound of accordion tinkles from the yurt.
Laughing voiceover: “Chase Ubashi Khan, until we get him in the
desert!”

The Last Stand of the Mongolian Army

  • 1. The Last Mongolian Army *This is published in the column of films and Television of “Chinese Writers”. 此剧本发表于“中国作家杂志“影视版。 1.Titles Volga River runs slowly in the morning fog. The tremendous red sun comes up from the water, as if staring at the grasslands on both two riverbanks of Volga River. Drumbeats of the royal guards appear to come from the horizon, from weak to strong. Those monotonous but rhythmic drumbeats hit people’s heart like many pieces of hail falling from the sky. The military band that was lined in a square array show up on the ramp, followed by a splendid Russian royal carriage that was drawn by six horses. After the horse-drawn vehicle, goes the swaggering royal guards. 2.In Khan’s Yard Scaffolds, ladders, and some decorative materials make the place topsy-turvy. At least ten Russian craftsmen are busy decorating. The finished part of the palace clearly shows that it has been turned into Russian style. 3.In Khan's Palace A portrait of Genghis Khan. In front of the seat of Khan, the queen and the prince is gazing at each other face to face. More than ten maids are looking at the mother and son without saying anything. The prince threw himself into the queen’s arms:” Eej (mother), I am not going to Petersburg! ” The queen clutches the prince’s robe with a cramp, looking numb. The prince entreats again: “ Mother, I am not going anywhere! ” The queen shakes her head stiffly. The prince asked in despair: “ Why must we go? ” The teeth of the queen bite her shaking underlip with blood coming out from it slowly. 4. Military Band, Royal Carriage and Royal Guards are Oncoming. Some Mongolian herdsmen stand in the grass, looking at this troop which rides on in majesty. 5.In the Newly-built Camp of Ubashi Khan A huge tent of middle troops is set up in as many as ten yurts. Some Mongolian soldiers are still using ropes to stabilize the footings. The huge tent waves from left to right to the rhythm of the ropes being pulled.
  • 2. Around the tent, stand some fully-armed and argus-eyed Mongolian soldiers nearby. 6.In the Tent Empty, with grass over knees uncleared. A ray of light shone on the portrait of Genghis Khan which is hung in the front. The portrait swings with the tent, as the light moves on Genghis Khan’s face from left to right. Ubashi Khan looks up at the portrait in the grass quietly, sitting cross-legged. Lama Zarsan sits aside, reciting the sutra silently while fingering the beads. Ubashi Khan’s shoulders start twitching. Lama Zarsan begins to run his beads at fast-speed, with his prayers speeding up. Ubashi Khan chokes and asks the master ruefully: “ Master, how can we end up like this?” Being silent, Lama Zarsan slowers his fingering the beads. Ubashi Khan: “ Master, master please! Answer me!” Lama Zarsan’s words are profound that it feels like these words are from the ancient times: “Nature changes, sun comes up and goes down, moon is not always at its full.” Ubashi Khan: “Could it be said that our ancestor — Genghis Khan’s greatness can’t be brought back?Is there any chance for us to have a hero like him? ”, Lama Zarsan : “ What goes up, must come down; what comes down, looks for peace. Lust is never limited. By obeying the will of God,the natural law, you can be a real hero.” 7. Outside the Tent Bosaler the company commander comes by riding a horse, jumping down and heading for the tent in hurry. A few warriors draw their side swords in a sudden to stop him from rushing in. Soon, a badly wounded battalion commander staggers along with a few injured soldiers. Seeing the brave coming back from the battle field, all the warriors salute them with their swords up. Warrior A: “ Welcome back, heroes, who fight for our honor! “ The commander arrogantly pushes the warriors aside and tries to go into the tent. However, after the salute, many swords lie across his chest. The commander is so pissed off that he draws his sword. So did his warriors. The imperial warriors are also not holding back, arraying around the commander. The sword falls from the commander’s hand for he is so exhausted that his body shakes before he falls down. His followers all put their swords back in sheaths and surrounded him. Bosaler is absolutely shocked at what he saw. 8. In the Tent
  • 3. Ubashi Khan: “Genghis Khan, our ancestor, carries swords and arrows and gunpowder, stepping on the unbounded lands. Many people were plunged in misery and suffering. Is that obeying the ‘natural law’? ” Lama Zarsan : “ Let people know how big the world is, so they can communicate and trade; hero follows the rules of nature to succeed, so nature flourishes by right of him.” Ubashi Khan: “How great was our ancestor Genghis Khan and how pathetic we are now! Is the integration of the world that leads us to fragmentation, a natural law? ” Lama Zarsan : “ The rules of heaven are heartless.” Ubashi Khan: “ The rules…the rules of heaven? The only thing we can do, is to obey?” Lama Zarsan : “ Yes.” Ubashi Khan: “ What is the law that we should obey today? ” Lama Zarsan : “ Survive and seek peace, seek peace to get safe.” Ubashi Khan: “ Master, what you meant…was that, by achieving this pathetic purpose, a hero can also be made? ” Lama Zarsan : “ Understand the law and obey it, then be a hero! ” Ubashi Khan turns around, with a worn and resolute look. Their gazes meet. Ubashi Khan puts his palms together and bows: “ Master, give me some time to understand! ” Lama Zarsan lifts his hands, the two parts of the beads are pulled parallel. Lama Zarsan : “Khan, insight is understanding.” 9.Outside the Tent The followers support the commander with their hands, fill him with a leather bag of milk. Ubashi Khan walks out of the tent slowly. All the warriors step aside to make a path for him, half kneeling with their heads down. Ubashi Khan then walks quickly towards the commander and squats. He sadly stares at him without saying a word. The commander looks at him in deep sorrow as Ubashi Khan’s face covered with tears: “Khan, the war isn’t over! Nothing has ever changed, again, all of our Mongolian soldiers died first! ” Ubashi Khan runs his eyes over the survivals, standing up slowly. He tells the guards around him: “ They need to get some rest. Put out their fear with the best wine! ” Bosaler meanwhile kneels in front of Ubashi: “ Khan, the ambassadors of Catherine the great have arrived!” The commander struggles to get rid of the hands that support him, throwing himself on Khan’s feet: “ We must stop dying unworthy for them! We people are the strongest warriors in the entire world! Every time, we sink into the toughest situation, exchanging those turks’ lives with ours! There is not even a last man standing! Khan, we didn’t bring shame. Is those greedy conquerors, they won’t give us a chance! ” Ubashi Khan can’t bear to look at him directly. He raises his head with his eyes closed. 10.Outside the Camp
  • 4. A squad of Cossacks is rushing towards the camp. They meet Ubashi and his cavalry head-on. The Mongolian warriors encircle the whole Cossack immediately. The leader of the Russian cavaliers shout out: “ Mongolians are cowards! You slipped away with the war not being ended! According to her majesty the queen’s law, your heads should all be cut off!” Ubashi Khan’s face turns ghastly black with rage, and simultaneously, his gaze may frighten the life out of someone. The leader seems scared: “ Are…are you Ubashi? What I meant was…um…many cowards hide in your troop, and they must be taken away to get their punishment from our queen!” Ubashi Khan draws his sword from the sheath of his waist all of a sudden. All the warriors pulls out their swords and pushes their horses to pounce on the Cossacks. A short battle. A machete is raised above the leader’s head, and about to go down. Ubashi Khan yells out: “ Keep him alive!” 11.In Front of Khan's Palace Military band strike with soothing drumbeat. On the footboard of the royal carriage, stands an ambassador of queen Catherine, who is dressed in tight army uniform, and has an air of superiority. She looks surly reserved. Behind the carriage, goes the royal guards in a square array. Ubashi Khan sits on the horse loftily. Behind him is the Mongolian army in loose battle array. The horses’ hooves of the royal guards are as steady as rock. The Mongolian’s horses clip all along. The Captain of the royal guards: “ Ubashi Khan, please get down from you horse, and be in readiness for the holy ambassador of her majesty the queen!” The captain of the Mongolian warriors: “ The ambassador of the queen, please step out of the carriage to accept Ubashi Khan’s request of presence.” The situation becomes absurd. The ambassador’s facial expression changes as she is surprised just then. Now she seems to be hesitating. Ubashi Khan is calm as water, with his eyes looking into the distance, as though he is immersed deeply in imagination. The envoy moves her feet, walks down the wooden ladder from the carriage, bowing with one of her hands across her chest. Ubashi Khan jumps off the horse, hangs his sword on the saddle and comes to the ambassador. The ambassador holds the letter in both her hands: “ It is in the command of you highness that…” Ubashi Khan interrupts her: “ Are you a woman?” Those rude words makes the ambassador embarrassed. Ubashi Khan smiles slightly: “ I am not sure…Let me just treat you as a man for now! ” The pretty envoy is irritated with her face turning red in anger. Ubashi Khan gestures his warriors to let them bring the leader of Cossacks before the envoy.
  • 5. A warrior who rides a horse carries the leader with his arm down. The poor headman strikes out the air, and shouts: “ Let go of me! I am a loyal warrior of her highness! I can’t bear your savage-like assault!” The Mongolian warrior throws down the leader. Just as he was about to hit the ground, a bright machete split the body. The ambassador yells, stepping back. The royal guards draw their swords at the same time. The captain of the Mongolian warriors says loudly: “ This man, insulted Ubashi Khan and his warriors. This is the punishment he deserves! ” The ambassador cools herself down. She then cast her deadly look at Ubashi Khan. Ubashi Khan is calm as usual, treating everything indifferently. The ambassador surly hates his heartlessness. She takes off her hat and throws it to the guard behind her. Her golden hair falls perfectly. Then she peers at Ubashi Khan with arrogance. There is slight tenderness in Ubashi Khan’s eyes as he is confronting this beautiful woman. A delicate hand reaches out in front of Ubashi Khan: “ I am the niece of Queen Catherine—Princess Bosnia, Nataliya Nikolaevna. ” A faint smile crossed Ubashi Khan’s face. He lifts up her hand and kissed it. 12.The Audience hall of Khan’s palace A rackety and magnificent banquet. A few beauties are dancing the cheerful and broad-hearted Mongolian dance. Whole roast lambs, different containers with wine, mountains of fruit and fried food, milchigs are placed on the long table in the front of the hall. Well-dressed Mongolian maidservants shuttle between the tables. Under the portrait of Genghis Khan, Ubashi Khan and his queen sit there. The prince and Princess Bosnia are seated on two sides of the table closest to Ubahsi Khan. Ubashi Khan observes the people in different camps quietly, as if being able to understand how the royal guards and the Mongolian nobles indulge in such fine wine and food. The queen is trying to restrain herself from being too sad. The prince glares at the princess and holds the hilt of his side sword with his slightly shaking hand. Princess Bosnia mildly looks at the nervous prince. She is pondering over what the prince is made of. Constantine the master of ceremony walks forward and bows in front of Ubashi Khan. Then he turns around and says: “ The warriors of her majesty the queen, my honorable guests, I now announce you that her highness, the queen with holy spirit, had already conferred Earl Ivan Ely Iggy on Prince Asarai. Also, under the name of the Madonna, Prince Asarai shall be baptized and regarded as the godson of her highness, in order to show respect for the queen. I suggest that Prince Asarai….I’m sorry…Earl Ivan Ely Iggy should
  • 6. propose a toast to the ambassador of the queen, our honorable Princess Bosnia!” The royal guards begins to cheer: “Ypa ( hurray) !” A few Mongolian noblemen stampede. However, they shyly quiet themselves down when seeing most of the others stay calm. Prince Asarai looks at Ubashi Khan for further movements. Ubashi smiles, as if he wants him to decide it himself. Prince Asarai comes to the table and fills his bowl with kumiss, and then fills another with strong white liquor. A maidservant holds a tray and comes to the prince and the princess. Princess Bosnia rises to her feet with astonishment, reaching out her right arm to the cold and arrogant prince. Prince Asarai shakes his head when seeing her arm, picks up that bowl with kumiss. The maidservant holds the bowl with white wine and gives it to the princess. Princess Bosnia hesitates to get the bowl. The strong scent of white wine makes her knit her eyebrows. Prince Asarai holds the bowl with both his hands: “Me, Prince Asarai of Turehot. You, Princess Bosnia. According to the etiquette of Mongolia, if we drink up this bowl of wine in our hands, we become friends!” Princess Bosnia comically says: “Wow, you’re eloquent!” Prince Asarai: “We Mongolians need friends,so, we learn the manners of welcoming our guests when we’re born!” Princess Bosnia says sincerely: “ You are a clever man, Holy Marry blesses you!” Prince Asarai: “ My father told me, it is always reliable to depend on yourself!” The princess admires him by nodding her head. Prince Asarai swigs down the wine. “ Hang on! ” Princess Bosnia starts to realize that the his wine is different from hers, “ Prince Asarai, are we drinking the same wine? I found the color different!” Prince Asarai: “ Different people, different wine.” Prince Bosnia: “ I want yours.” Prince Asarai: “ You have the chance before you take the bowl. Now it’s too late to avoid drinking it!” “What if I don’t?” She asks. Prince Asarai says: “ Refusing to drink the wine we offered means you are unwilling to be our friend!” The royal guards seem to be angry, ready for action. Princess Bosnia asks: “ What if I let someone else replace me?” Prince Asarai answers: “A friend can not be replaced!” Princess Bosnia: “ Do you really want to be friends with me?” Prince Asarai: “As long as you are a friend, I am.” Princess Bosnia: “ Ok, then I will do!” Constantine: “ Your Highness!” She swallows it with her pretty blue eyes wide-open. Prince Asarai turns around and walks back to his seat. Ubashi Khan burst into laughter: “ Good! For the princess’ briskness, I will drink for company!”
  • 7. Princess Bosnia claps her hands animatedly because of the effect of the wine. 13.The Harem The queen holds the prince tightly in her arms. “My son, you did great! You did great…” She says with her eyes filled with tears. The prince asks: “Mother, can I be a hero?” At this moment Ubashi Khan walks in and answers: “ Yes my son, you will. And your mission now, is to bear everything in a strange place like a hero!” Prince Asarai: “ Father, bearing makes a hero?” Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, the one who bears everything is a hero.” The queen’s body shakes. Prince Asarai struggles to free himself from his mom, standing in front of the Khan: “Father, I will never disappoint you!” 14.A garden in Slavonic style A statue of Mary nursing the baby Jesus, paintings of Russian Orthodox on the wall, dazzling tulips… Ubashi Khan looks about and says: “This is not the kind of garden I love. But I will never believe in what they believe!” The expression on the queen’s face warns the Khan. “ My queen, are you…tempting me to speak like you?” The queen drops to her knees: “ Khan, I beg you, a child should never bear the things that a hero can’t!” Ubashi Khan smiles grimly: “ A hero? She should be paying visit right now. After all, your family is the first to abandon the Buddha and believe in God.” Segoule: “ At least, I am still a Buddhist.”
  • 8. Ubashi Khan: “That I will remember. You are probably a piece of gold in the sand. ” Segoule: “ For the sake of the queen, my honorable Khan, please, come in. Ubashi Khan considers this way of eating troublesome and puts those aside. Then, he reaches for the Mongolian knife which is in the hand of his warrior, and pares the meat by holding it in his hands. Afterwards, he takes up the lucid goblet to drink. The oil stain and the handprint with small fragments of meat is left on the glass goblet. Batu frowns when seeing this. Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, Turehot is at the point of survival. For our hundreds of thousands of people, I hope for your help. ” Batu: “My dear nephew, are you trying to bring your uncle troubles? My father charged me with the duty of finding a new home for my people. I will not give up fighting for his last words! ” Batu: “Right, your father have been hesitating his whole life, he refused to make obeisance to the Russian emperor, also he was not able to make his army strong. I conquered the lands and almost lost my own life in the ravine of Transcaucasia. Finally, I made it and attained peace. But he, he left his ridiculous wills to his son? Are we going to walk the same dangerous path of his because of his last words?”
  • 9. Ubashi Khan: “Uncle, it is true, that you are living a good life. But take a look at my people, there are soldiers dying in every single household every single year! How long will this last?” Batu: “ Oh, nephew, since the age of Genghis Khan, it has been the duty for a Mongolian soldier to die on the battle field! You don’t have to waste your time on such unachievable dream!” Ubashi Khan: “ Yes, we can’t build up another invincible empire. But I believe that, we Mongolians still have the power to win back a land of peace of our own.” “A land of peace?”Batu has his eyes wide open before bursting into laughter, “My nephew! You are more childish than your father! Do you know anything about childish? Childish equals to foolish!” The guard captain of Ubashi Khan— Selengjab suddenly pulls out the sword and points it at Batu: “You madcap, how dare you humiliate our Khan!” Batu is so scared that both his knife and fork drop on the table. “Selengjab! You, you want my nephew to bear the crime of killing his uncle?” Selengjab: “You must apologize for what you said to Khan. Otherwise, I will cut off your head with my machete!” Batu stares goggle-eyed at Khan. “Neph…My Khan, I,I didn’t mean to insult you! She points at a golden roof building with her whip. Princess Bosnia: “ Constantine, what is that house for? The one stands alone.” Constantine: “That is the Mongolian church. They believe in a god called Buddha.” Princess Bosnia: “What’s the difference between our God and theirs?” Constantine: “Totally different. Because of the doctrine of Buddhism, they repel collective action but advocate self- comprehension of kindness and forgiveness.” Princess Bosnia: “I don’t understand. Avoid common action and believe in kindness and forgiveness? How can these things forge such brave, strong and battlewise nation!” Constantine: “ My princess, this is an unresolved mystery.” Princess Bosnia“I would like to go into the house. ” Constantine smiles: “Princess, their churches are for men so no woman is allowed to enter. Khan, now that you’ve already known your mission, no one will ever take your soul away. ” Ubashi Khan: “Will you be back one day?”
  • 11. Lama Zarsan: “ Coming is leaving, vice versa. For such horse, you may need to protect his wild nature. Once he lost his dauntlessness, all he can do will be pulling the ploughs on the land you conquered as if tamed. But, you, the great Queen Catherine, you are never in need of a docile horse…” 27.Outdoor Constantine is hovering. He hates the pagans. The home of the pagans here is right in that temple. I…I’ve been watching that old lama. Ubashi Khan was talking to him yesterday for quite a long time.” Constantine: “You call this…information? ” Bosaler: “No, I meant there maybe a strong connection between the old lama and Ubashi’s scheme. He stares at a few royal guards who look relaxed and complacent: “You offended the holy Buddha. You must pay the price!” Princess Bosnia: “What do you want?” Ubashi Khan looks up and refuses to answer. They maybe needed when you leave your father.” Prince Asarai: “No! Master, my mother told me that, I don’t have to leave my father anymore!” Lama Zarsan shakes his head: “Prince, you have no choice, neither do your father. You must go to that strange place.” “Why?” He is shocked. Lama Zarsan: “Because you are the prince of Turehot, you lost the right to decide when you’re born.” Prince Asarai’s voice shakes: “Master! If Khan replaces the queen with you, we will have nothing to worry about!” Bicheeg is irritated: “Alexander, I know I like Khan, but that is my business!” Bicheeg walks out in anger. Staring at the princes with confusion, he does not know how to answer Khan. Princess Bosnia thinks for a while and smiles: “Well, this is probably the best arrangement.” Ubashi Khan: “Fine then, this is it. Princess Bosnia, I have to go to the camp, so I shall not be eating with you during dinner.” Princess Bosnia runs her eyes over the fancy palace: “Khan, the great Khan’s palace is no better than a camp that shakes and crumbles?” Ubashi Khan: “Yes, I like the smell of grass.” Ubashi Khan walks out without looking back. The sharp edge of the knife slides on her dress. The parts of her fragmentized dress start falling…until her whole white body is exposed. The knife drops. Bicheeg says with crying-like voice: “Khan, you saw it, you saw what I can do for you! They are targeted at you!” Bayer is becoming excited: “Abba, he is no better than me. I…I can also be a Khan!” Batu’s body starts to shake. Bayar asks anxiously: “Abba, are you good?” Batu points at a machete with jewelry decorations that hangs on the wall: “Bring..bring it to me.” Bayar takes the machete with excitement and kneels down in front of his father. His eyes are filled with the flame of expectation. Batu suddenly draws out the machete and then places it on his son’s neck. Bayar is scared: “A…Abba, what are you doing?” The edge of the knife cuts the surface of his skin where blood comes out. Bayar yells as the pain gets stronger: “Abba! Abba!” Batu: “Swear to Mongke Tengri, never betray him!” Bayar crys: “Abba, I swear, I will never betray Ubashi Khan!” The machete is away from his neck. Bayar picks up a white napkin to stop his blood. Bayar whimpers: “ Abba, you almost killed your own son!” Batu has his tears all over his face and touches his son’s head with his shanking hand: “Bayar, it is never easy to be a Khan, no fun will be found.” Bayar feels aggrieved: “Ok, then I will not be a Khan. But why would you do such a thing?” Batu:“Quickly, go secretly and tell Khan that those people are going to rebel…” 59. In the light of night, Bayar climbs over the wall and falls hard from the top of it. After picking himself up, he runs with his hand on the neck, and staggers as if he is on cotton. 60.Outside the Gate of Abakov’s House

My sister is the queen, our families are closely connected!” Bayar gulps down his wine again: “Alright, I…I believe you!” 62.In the Inner Chamber of Abakov’s House Bicheeg is combing and putting her makeup on in front of a mirror, keeping a ear to what his brother is saying. Abakov’s shivering hands help him dress himself up: “This will change our whole family’s destiny! I must go to see Princess Bosnia!” Alexander asks: “But…uh…what about Khan?” Abakov says: “Let me know what the princess says first. Coax Bayar, don’t let him leave.” Alexander takes a glance at Bicheeg: “That stupid passed out drunk.” Bicheeg’s body shakes. The comb slides down her hair all of a sudden. As he left, Constantine quickly gets back to the princess: “My noble princess, since when have you accepted the queen’s commission? How…am I not supposed to be the first to know?” Princess Bosnia smiles: “My beloved Constantine C Alexey Norwich, I sent my request the last time I wrote to the queen. And today, I am formally commissioned.” Constantine asks: “My princess, you’d rather stay here…a place full of heathens?” Princess Bosnia: “Isn’t it good? You should feel happy for me if I can tame a violent-tempered horse for our use!” Constantine is disappointed: “Oh, my princess, it is my job to take the prince under escort. I can not be around. That’s so much pain!” Princess Bosnia giggles: “My lovely Constantine, this is why I kept it from you!” 66.In the Deep Grassland Outside the Camp Ubashi Khan looks deep into the far. The warriors of the squad of guards stop him at the gate with their swords horizontally placed. The commander draws out his sword and chops the hitching post. The commander shouted by clenching his teeth: “Khan! The rebels are ready to take action! Are we waiting for them to come?” As the fires are set, the guards leave him a road. Ubashi Khan appears serious in front of the soldiers and generals. All the people are actively going forward and kneeling down with one knee: “Khan, give us the order!” Khan announced seriously: “All of you stay here, I am going myself.” Khan gets on the horse. Everyone shouts: “No! We can’t let Khan be in danger yourself!” Ubashi Khan starts to laugh. The terrifying laughter goes so far that even the busy warriors at the periphery of the camp stop when they hear it… The laughter stops. Batu stops them by waving his hands: “No more, I know, your calling “Khan” is all fake. Whom you really needed, is him!” He kneads his son’s shoulders with his fingers. Bayar crumples down onto the ground. Batu: “ Look, my poor son is so weak. Can he burden all these?I know, I know, you all want a puppet, to satisfy the greed of each family!” Bayar cries: “Let go of me! I just wanted to live a happy life, I never wanted to be a Khan!” Batu: “Mongke Tengri has given us the warning. The grasslands near Volga is no longer heaven! The lonely lion is being hunted by a strong hunter. What can we get from a dead lion? My brothers and children, think about it!” Old nobleman A’s machete in his hand hangs down.
