Overview of Old System
3
 Data is kept in Excel Format in both local and shared drives.
 Multiple files in multiple folders to classify different kinds of data.
• Project – Related
i. EM Tracking Information
ii. Shipping Tracking Information
iii. Matrix Part Approval
• Engineering – Related
i. Engineering Planning
ii. Engineering Time Sheet
Data Storage

Overview of Old System (Cont.)
4
 Weakness
• System Error – Shared excel files are in “read-only” mode even
though no one is using it.
• Security – All the shared files can be changed / overridden by
every group member.
• Singleness – Each excel file can only keeps one particular kind
of data.
 Difficulties
• Updating – Artificially locate the documents to complete
updating.
• Users – Simultaneously multiple operations are not supported.
• Management – Unable to get the latest status onetime.
– Needs everyone’s presence to the weekly
meeting in order to update the information of
the current stage.

Overview of New System
5
 Microsoft Office Access is applied as the
database in both local and shared drives.
 Microsoft Visual Studio is applied to design
the User Interface to access the database.
 Centralized System design achieves the
independence for Application and Database.

Overview of New System (Cont.)
6
 Strength
• System Error – Can be eliminated by improving the program
and algorithm.
• Security – The authorization for each access to each kind of
data is given from the manager.
• Stability – Independent Database and Application prevent the
data from loss or damage.
 Benefits
• Updating – Automatically locate the Database to update the
data TO and FROM the Database by one-click.
• Users – Multiple users are supported to use simultaneously.
• Management – Convenient synchronization helps the data
sharing among group members, and easy to
plan the Time and Resource for the projects.

New System Features (Cont.)
8
 Highly DIY functions
The application integrates all
the functions in the main
window to bring convenience
to the users.
 User-Friendly UI
Customised and similar interface
helps users fast and easily to use
the application for daily work.
Cummins Confidential
Interface and Comparison
9
 Interfacing New System to Old System
The application allows users to export the data to excel format by
one-click operation.
 Advantages
• Establish the connection between new system and old system.
• Easy data transmission to different departments and regions in
Cummins.
• Provide the users with another way to store and process data
in one specific stage.
Cummins Confidential
Interface and Comparison (Cont.)
10
 Comparison between New System and Old System
Features Old System New System
Users
Only one user can edit the data
at a time
Independent database supports
multiple users
Security
Anyone accessible to the shared
drive has the same access
Account system clarifies the
access to different work roles
Update
Copy and overwrite the old file
to complete updating
One-click operation for both
TO and FROM database
Error
Unable to be solved as it
belongs to Microsoft
Able to be solved as it belongs
to Cummins

Further Development
11
 Applicable to other Cummins Departments and Regions with:
• Similar Data Format
• Installment of Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0
• Shared Drive Path
 Improvement
• Optimize the algorithm to make the application more efficient.
• Optimize the UI to make the application more comfortable.
• Collect the feedback and do self-debug to reduce the errors.
 Internal Relation in Database
• Develop more functions to meet the needs.
• Make the different kinds of data (Project / Engineer Plan /
Engineer Timesheet / Capacity) more interrelated
