Newcastle University in the UK has developed a revolutionary system that uses vegetable oil to power a generator for electricity, heating, and cooling homes. The system captures waste heat from burning the oil to provide these utilities. It results in near zero carbon emissions since the fuel plant absorbs carbon while growing. Croton Megalocarpus oil from East Africa is identified as a potential fuel source, as the plant grows on non-arable land without competing with food crops.

1. Croton Megalocarpus: Vegetable Oil to Power your Home and Car
Imagine a super-efficient system that has the potential to power, heat and cool homes by burning vegetable oil
to power a generator and provide electricity. Newcastle University in the UK has developed this revolutionary
method that uses waste heat from burning the oil to provide heating and hot water that can also be used to
power a refrigerator.
At each step, the waste heat that is produced from engine gases and cooling is used elsewhere to recover the
maximum amount of energy from the system. In addition to this, the plant producing the fuel absorbs carbon
whilst growing - resulting in near zero overall carbon emissions.
'The supply of electricity, heating and cooling can be optimized by this one, efficient and sustainable system,'
says Project Leader Professor Tony Roskilly. 'The combination of the generator and energy storage provides
new ways to respond to changing energy demand in the home.'
Croton Megalocarpus, a plant which grows in East Africa is one of the potential oils that can be used in
this new system. Croton Megalocarpus oil brings with it the advantage of being able to grow on land that is not
suitable for traditional farming or food production - providing a fuel without sacrificing land for food crops.
