Demas was originally a fellow prisoner and worker with Paul who was committed to his Christian faith. However, according to 2 Timothy, Demas later deserted Paul because he had come to love this world. Demas provides a warning that we should never think we have reached the goal of our faith and must remain vigilant against being tempted away from God by worldly attractions, as Satan is constantly seeking to lead people astray. Staying strong in faith requires ongoing effort to grow spiritually and not lose sight of eternal priorities over temporary worldly pleasures.

8. What can we learn from Demas?
Demas
1. Don’t ever think we’ve reached the
goal. I Cor. 10:11-13
9. I Corinthians 10:11-13
These things happened to them as
examples and were written down as
warnings for us, on whom the
culmination of the ages has come.
So, if you think you are standing
firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No
temptation has overtaken you except
what is common to mankind. And
God is faithful; he will not let you be
tempted beyond what you can bear
10. I Corinthians 10:11-13
But when you are tempted, he will
also provide a way out so that you
can endure it.

1. Don’t ever think we’ve reached the
goal. I Cor. 10:11-13
Phil. 3:12 - 14
12. Philippians 3:12-14
Not that I have already obtained all this, or
have already arrived at my goal, but I
press on to take hold of that for which
Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers
and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to
have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:
Forgetting what is behind and straining
toward what is ahead, I press on toward
the goal to win the prize for which God
has called me heavenward in Christ
Jesus.

1. Don’t ever think we’ve reached the
goal. I Cor. 10:11-13
Phil. 3:12 - 14
2 Peter 1:5 - 11
14. 2 Peter 1:5-11
For this very reason, make every effort
to add to your faith goodness; and to
goodness, knowledge; and to
knowledge, self-control; and to self-
control, perseverance; and to
perseverance, godliness; and to
godliness, mutual affection; and to
mutual affection, love. For if you
possess these qualities in increasing
measure, they will keep you from being
15. 2 Peter 1:5-11
ineffective and unproductive in your
knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ. But whoever does not have
them is nearsighted and blind,
forgetting that they have been
cleansed from their past sins.
Therefore, my brothers and sisters,
make every effort to confirm your
calling and election. For if you do these
things, you will never stumble, and you
16. 2 Peter 1:5-11
will receive a rich welcome into the
eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ.

22. Matthew 16:23-27
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get
behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling
block to me; you do not have in mind
the concerns of God, but merely
human concerns.”
Then Jesus said to his
disciples, “Whoever wants to be my
disciple must deny themselves and
take up their cross and follow me. For
whoever wants to save their life will

lose it, but whoever loses their life for
me will find it. What good
will it be for someone to gain the whole
world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what
can anyone give in exchange for their
soul? For the Son of Man is going to
come in his Father’s glory with his
angels, and then he will reward each
person according to what they have
done.
