Abstract
Karachi the backbone of Pakistan is unfortunately surrounded with so many problems. The
city's population is increasing day by day which causing shortage of the resources and
contributing towards more problems. Due to living in flats people do not get exposed to
sunlight which causing them deficiency of vitamin D especially in women's and children’s that
is why we want to rehabilitate the dead parks of Karachi and want to work on empty places to
convert them into proper places, so that people spend sufficient time under sunlight. The reason
of rehabilitation of parks is not just for covering the deficiency of vitamin D. But we want to
incorporate more greenery in our city. Having parks has numerous of benefits and biggest
benefit is reduce heat, provide clean air, and reduce pollution and as we all know that pollution
is one of the biggest problems in Karachi nowadays, which is causing so many different
diseases. People are getting very exhausted due to city crowding, traffic, and unpleasant
weather. Little picnics, gathering and small walks in parks, clean and fresh environment
interacting with nature is important for mental and physical health. We can promote healthy
lifestyle and clean environment by our project. It is costly but worth because it can solve so
many problems of our city.
Introduction
Karachi the city of light is has been surrounded with so many tangible and intangible problems
like traffic, pollution, unemployment, inflation, sewage problem, water storage, load shedding
and so many others. According to the last census, Karachi’s total population was 16,051,521.
Karachi is home to more than three million refuges from different countries like Bangladesh
and Afghanistan.
Increased rate of population has cut off the living resources for its peoples leading towards to
unemployment and poverty. This problem also restricted the people to live in small
apartments and flats.
Obviously, how can people purchase big properties when they have not enough money for 2-
time meal? Due to living in flats they do not get exposed to sunlight or not sufficient sunlight
come to their flats and apartments which causes them deficiency of vitamin D. Vitamin D
deficiency can lead to a loss of bone density, which can contribute to osteoporosis and fractures
(broken bones), specially in women.

And the other big problem is increasing pollution An increasing number of automobiles on the
road, a lack of road maintenance and repair, and the lack of a waste management system, which
leads to many individuals burning rubbish, all contribute to air pollution The polluted air in the
Karachi acts as a gradual poison, causing asthma, sore throats, and heart problems .it heavy
population, pollution, unstructured houses , city's thoroughfares are being clogged by an
increasing number of vehicles, motorbikes, and minibuses that causes traffic have made
Karachi urban heat island.
In accordance with these problems, we want to work on a project in which we will use parks
of Karachi. As we all know that Karachi has a so many unused areas which can be converted
into parks and so many other existing parks had spoiled because of no one take care you them.
Vitamin D is produced when your skin is exposed to sunshine and hence being exposed to the
sun about 15-20 minutes three days per week is usually sufficient. incorporating greenry has
numerous of health and environment. benefits So, we wanted to initiate our program on parks
or commence our project by rehabilitating the existing park because taking care of parks is very
essential and useful because it creates greenery, which is great barrier toward pollution and
provide clean environment clear air and reduce heat. Karachi’s one of the biggest problems is
pollution; with this program it will also help reducing the air pollution additionally we will
provide secure environment and provide refreshment service by making proper food shops
there. Women are trigger to bones problems, so we want to give them an opportunity by turning
their outings into the healthy activity and it will them in boosting mental health. Our project
will create a place for playing for kids which help them in interacting them with nature.
Addition to this project we will also provide awareness that how much this program important
for their mental and physical health and how this program can prevent their so many future
health problems. We want government to help us implement this project or any private agency
to join us with sufficient cost.
Background
Physical activity is one of a core elements of healthy and productive life. Mostly, low-income
people lacking on physical activity. We must renovate local dead parks to provide clean air
peaceful environment, to attract our youth towards physical activity.
Lacking physical activities and exposure to nature causes different diseases in human body that
may include heart disease, diabetes, cancers, bone disease etc. Exposure to nature and taking
fresh air also improve mental health and reduces stress

Green space reduces pollutant air which is a one of the major problems in Pakistan. Parks also
add value to real estate.
Parks are the reliable source of doing physical activity, to boost mental health and most of all
to reduce vitamin D deficiency and helps to overcome other health issues while being expose
to the sun.
Problem Statement
1. How can we rehabilitate the dead parks of Karachi to promote clean environment
reduce pollution??
2. How by just incorporating greenery we can get numerous of health and environment
benefits?
3. Bones diseases are seen in old ages, but nowadays young people’s age (15-25) is also
triggering with bones problems i.e., bone pains stretch, how can we prevent bones
issues or deficiency of vitamin D in early ages or without use of medicines??
Objective
The aim of this research is to examine the dead parks of Karachi and to rehabilitate those parks
to improve the quality of citizen’s life through regular, , 2 or 3 times in a week for practicing
physical activity of in taking sunlight to cater with vitamin D deficiency and to be in contact
with natural environment which is very beneficial for both mental and physical health. It will
help in making clean environment and improve air quality
Literature Review
“Karachi is one of the most populated city, where different urban problems are increasing day
by day.” (DAWN April 17, 2017)
According to bone health and osteoporosis foundation, Estrogen, a hormone which preserves
bones, drops dramatically when women enter menopause, which can lead to bone loss. And
women have thinner bones than men that’s why risk of having osteoporosis in women is high

can lead to rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. According to a research, vitamin D
deficiency can cause cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and

According to another research we come to know that Vitamin D's primary role is to keep
calcium levels in check. Several factors play a role, but exposure to sunlight is the most critical
part of its optimal physiological functioning, which is why it is also known as the vitamin of
sunlight.

range of ecological services they provide, such as carbon capture, air pollution reduction,
biodiversity maintenance, aquifer recharge, and climate regulation, urban green areas are
linked to city sustainability. The link between urban nature and human well-being, on the other
hand, sometimes goes unrecognized, especially in cities where planners are more concerned
with the economic expansion than with social relationships. Individually, a lack of exposure to
natural places is manifested in an increase in mental and physical ailments.
Danya Kim, Jangik Jin, 2018, Modern city life causes a slew of physical ailments and
persistent stress, which can lead to disease and cancer. People who reside in big cities are more
likely to be exposed to physical pressures that negatively impact their subjective well-being.
Scholars have stressed the importance of urban parks, green spaces, and recreational areas in
giving physical and mental benefits to citizens in a variety of ways. People can relieve mental
weariness in urban green spaces, which can be used for physical activity as well as relaxation
and repair.
The Express Tribune February 28, 2022, according to the analysis, Karachi's air pollution
encompasses solid and liquid particles, as well as some gases. Transportation and industrial
pollutants are the most significant polluters, followed by waste burning, emissions from
refrigerators, generators, dust blowing, and stoves used in homes and hotels. According to the
inquiry, all sorts of woods have been cut to an alarming degree, including mangroves along
Sindh's coastline, which used to help absorb carbon dioxide and provide clean air in Karachi.
The current mangrove forest cover in Karachi is 50,000 hectares. Encroachments,
commercialization, and infrastructural development have resulted in the loss of 10,000 hectares
of mangrove forest in Karachi during the previous 50 years.
Article by Casandra, having parks have so many benefits it provides clean air, boost mental
health , a good place for physical activities and it is a good place for kids for playing and
spending some time with nature. Parks are extremely useful in reducing urban heat island
effect.

Methodology
The objective of this project is to rehabilitate the dead parks where people can enjoy as well as
we take sunlight which is prime source of vitamin D. So that entire enjoyment session converts
into healthy program and promote clean environment. Our main audience is women’s and
children, especially housewives who do not go outside and especially we have seen women are
mostly trigger with bones issues and vitamin D deficiency. The method use in this examination
is field survey. The information has been gathered from articles and internet to understand this
study and field survey has been organized. To gather the necessary information, the locational,
operational, and infrastructure characteristics of the park have been assessed through
observations from surveys. To make dead or dirty parks relive, we clean, and create a good
infrastructure, arrange sitting arrangement, and tuck shops and most of all to contact with
NGOs and authority to take responsibility of taking care of these parks. After this, the overall
situation and functions of the park assessed as visitors’ opinion and their preferences to
construct and increase efficiency as visitors need.

Conclusion
Renovation of local parks has positive impact on human being’s mental and physical health.
Physical activity and vitamin D is essential for everyone especially for children which we get
from the appropriate exposure to sunlight. This is scientifically proved that physical inactivity
can cause heart diseases and other dangerous diseases that is why investing in renovation of
public parks is particularly important to encourage the youth to become more physically active
and get connect with nature. Parks are the reliable source of reducing stress and improving
mood and self-esteem which is essential for maintaining mental wellbeing. It also helps in
purifying the air and increase greenery as we know that the pollution in Karachi is increasing
day by day.
