We would all like to have Crystal ball, right.
So we could see future, know what users want.
Imagine making facebook or google before facebook or google.
But we don’t have crystal ball.
So what do we do.
We guess,
we use gut feeling,
we make assumptions
Assumptioin is the mother of all fuckups
Don’t Assume things
Know things
So what should we do then?
How to know what users want ?
Is there a better way then guessing?
Can we ask users what they want?
We are producing huge amount of data all the time.
Just think how much data we create, via social media
It is enormues.
Data is power.
Who ever has the data hold the keys to this enormous power.
First we need to gather data.
Monitor everything.
Gather information how user intereact with your web site.
Gather information how they interacte with your app.
Gather as much info as you can.
From this data create hypotheses.
I think that if we do this, users will do that
Next step is to scientifecly aprove or disaprove your hypotesis.
Use A/B testinig for that.
Imagne you have a website
And you have a green button.
You think that if you make button red, users will interace more.
Create version with red button
Route trafic to both version A and B at the same time.
50/50
50% of users will see version A
50% of users will see version B
Gather info, monitor everything
Do users interacte in a way you thought they would
Which convertes better A or B.
In the end ....
You have a winner
You know what users want
You have scientificly aproved or disaproved your hypotesis
Which means
No more endless boring meetings
I had my fare share of them , and I don’t want them any more
No more He who shout the loudest win the argument
If you have opinions and no data, this is how it ends
No more hippo
Highest paid person’s opinion
We don’t care how much you earn, we care about data.
Every one has opiniions, and will argue for them
You can’t argue data
Make all your decisions data driven
Amazon
Boooking
Google and many others are using a/b testing for years to make their fortune
