Nigeria to outline the strategies used in tackling the increase in ship size for a container ship in
the Nigeria market.
Objective: How will PIL Nigeria manage its competitive advantage in the new market of an
increase in ship size? And what business strategy is required for PIL Nigeria to gain presence
in the current market change?
Background to the study: PIL Nigeria- an Agent to PIL Singapore, which operate both
container shipping and a Multi Purpose Vessels Service.

Literature Review
4
Problem Definition: Shipping industry- maritime sector.
Increase in container ship PIL potential market.
PIL Nigeria Market: West African Containerised Maritime Service Review.
PIL Main Port Of Call: Nigeria Port Efficiency.
5

5
The methods used in approaching this case study report are:
Student working as an intern researcher for PIL Nigeria,
Interviews, collected materials derived from scholarly articles, researches, daily brainstorming
sessions with the Commercial Manager and the meetings with the other managers,
Also the morning meetings and easy interaction with staffs in each department.
The use of empirical research, observation, surveys, data, interactive mode and secondary
research were use to generate outcome,
With theories related to case study.
6
Findings
6
Various theories can be seen associated with the increase in ship size:
Strategy alliances models reviewed in a shipping company,
model used in reaping greater economies of scale through larger vessels,
Strategy for port advancement to accommodate bigger ship,.
Also suggested solutions based on the finding of other scholars.
7
Conclusion
7
Bigger ship is good for the future, but not for the immediate situation at hand in Nigerian port.
Due to lack of port constraint in Nigeria, terminals can’t handle up to the largest ship size
presently.
Increase in ship size (positive effect for the future).
Cost Advantage.
Helps identify competitors.
Gives a shipping competitive advantage in the market.
Better transit time for shipping line.
Room for strategy alliances.
Room for port advancement.
