1. Vittorio Fossati-Bellani
Summary of
qualifications
Dr. Fossati-Bellani has spent most of his career at Coherent
(Nasdaq:COHR), one of the world’s leading laser companies, where
he was an Executive Vice-President. In his various assignments, Dr.
Fossati-Bellani has provided strategic, marketing, business
development and general management leadership in expanding the
role of the company from the original one of being a scientific
instruments manufacturer, into a provider of capital equipment to
large markets, both established and emerging. In doing so, he has
gained valuable knowledge in the dynamics of such diverse fields as
semiconductor and microelectronics, renewable energy, graphic arts
and display, material processing and automotive, medical
diagnostics and therapeutics.
He has created and led new divisions and business units from start-
up inside the corporation, establishing them as leaders in their
market segment.
He has identified, analyzed and pursued several successful Mergers
and Acquisitions activities.
After leaving Coherent in April 2006, Dr.Fossati-Bellani started a
consulting company where he applied his experience to the service
of the photonics industry.
He was also employed at DILAS, a diode laser company part of
Rofin-Sinar of Germany.
In October 2008 he joined Pyrophotonics, a Canadian start-up
where he concentrated on sales, marketing and business
development, in various microelectronics and micro-machining
markets with a special emphasis on PhotoVoltaics.
After Phyrophotonics’ acquisition by ESI, Dr. Fossati-Bellani resumed
his consulting business which brought him in contact with Laser
Operations, where he was hired first as CMO then CEO. He was also
actively involved in the successful sale of Mobius to IPG.
Having moved to the US in 1983, Dr. Fossati-Bellani has retained
strong cultural and business affiliations with Europe. He has also
traveled extensively to the Far East (mostly Japan, but also China,
Taiwan, Korea and Singapore) and is therefore in a uniquely strong
position to provide international leadership for companies operating
in various geographical segments.
Dr. Fossati-Bellani is also applying, in his free time, his international
experience to non-profit organizations helping social cooperation in
developing countries.

2. Work
experience
July 2010 to Present
Photonics Consultant
After Pyrophotonics was acquired by ESI, Dr. Fossati-Bellani has
resumed his consultancy practice, advising photonics companies on
PhotoVoltaics, Electrical Storage, Sensing, and Medical markets. He
has also been retained as an advisor for several companies pursuing
equity partnerships or acquisitions. He was actively involved in the
successful sale of Mobius to IPG.
From July to November 2013, one of his assignment was to be
acting CEO and board member of NP Photonics, a VC-backed
Arizona fiber laser company. The company was short on cash when
he took over, and several anticipated government contracts did not
finalize, so, following his recommendation, the VCs decided to shut
down the company and sell its assets.
January 2012 to August 2012
Laser Operations, LLC
Chief Marketing Officer, then Chief Executive officer
Increased Sales presence in Germany, China and Japan, by signing
new Distributors and consultants. As CEO, he developed the
company’s business plan to position the company for equity
investments and/or outside acquisition.
October 2008 to July 2010
Pyrophotonics, Inc. Montreal, Quebec
Vice President, Sales and Marketing
In his position, Dr. Fossati-Bellani, was chartered by the
Pyrophotonics Board to expand the uses of its unique laser
technology to the emerging PhotoVoltaic laser processing markets.
His first decision was to establish an apps lab facility in California,
close to many of the potential customers. In addition to the highly
successful applications lab, and to an existing collaboration with NRC
in London, Ontario, Dr. Fossati-Bellani established a collaboration
project with the Fraunhofer Center for Laser Technology, in
Plymouth, MI, which generated novel results. Having the
applications facilities in place, Dr. Fossati engaged customers to
demonstrate the unique advantages of the Pyrophotonics
technology. Thanks to his business development work, coupled with
the excellent applications work done at the lab, Pyrophotonics has
been able to demonstrate processes previously thought impractical
in PV and Si machining. This work has resulted in several valuable IP
submissions and secured design wins in various PV thin film and Si
applications.
3. October 2007 to September 2008
DILAS, Inc. Tucson, Arizona
Director, Business Development
While at DILAS, Dr. Fossati-Bellani identified major US medical
customers, within a multi-million dollar market. He also engaged
various solar cell manufacturing companies.
April 2006 to September 2007
Ergolase, Inc Santa Clara, CA, USA
Founder and President
At Ergolase, Dr. Fossati-Bellani provided services to the photonics
industry, such as writing business plans, developing markets and
finding financing opportunities for US and European start-up
companies.
Coherent, Inc Santa Clara, CA, US
April 2005 to April 2006
Vice President, Strategic Growth
Responsible for identifying new significant markets for the
company’s existing and developing technologies. Identified a multi-
billion $$ market segment where optical technologies play a major
role in extending the capabilities of process analytical
instrumentation. Targeted strategic partners and acquisitions.
November 2002 to April 2005
Chief Marketing Officer
Organized the Marketing group under Directors and Vice-Presidents,
each responsible to address the primary market segments pursued
by the company. The group worked together with Product
Marketing inside Technology Business Units (TBU’s), R&D, and Field
Operations to offer a cohesive approach to markets served by
diverse technologies. A significant success was the extraordinary
growth (more than 50% y/y) achieved in the micro-electronic
segment between 2003 and 2004.
Started the Strategic Marketing function to identify and pursue new
application for the company’s technology. Identified and lead early
development into a potentially very large consumer electronic
application.
Identified M&A candidates as well as potential strategic partners.
4. Was one of the leading negotiators in the acquisition of scientific
laser manufacturer Positive Light.
Provided marketing synergy and coordination between company
divisions previously run separately.
September 2000 to November 2002
President – Telecom Actives Group
Led the exploration of new technologies and applications for the
expected boom in the Optical Telecom market. After concluding
that the boom was not going to materialize, presided to the closure
of the Telecom activities, but preserved the technology
achievements in the field of Optically Pumped Semiconductor (OPS)
lasers, facilitating their redeployment into other commercial markets
and positioning them for future high-volume applications.
September 1997 to September 2000
President and General Manager – Semiconductor Group
Created a new division by acquiring a 3 people start-up from
Uniphase, bringing semiconductor laser technology into Coherent.
This activity propelled the company into a dominant role in the
Graphic Arts market.
It also provided the unique engine for products developed in other
divisions, which are based on the devices provided by the
Semiconductor Group. When he left the post, more than $200M of
revenues relied on products designed and manufactured by the
Semiconductor Group.
Proposed, engineered and concluded the acquisition of the epitaxial
wafer company Tutcore of Tampere, Finland, which gave Coherent a
sustainable competitive advantage in compound materials
(Aluminum-free Gallium Arsenide) used for semiconductor lasers.
As General Manager of the group, he grew revenues from 0 to
>$30M in 3 years.
1992-1997
Business Unit Manager
Identified the need for the company to invest into Diode Pumped
Solid State (DPSS) Lasers, realizing that this technology would one
day displace most of its existing products, at that time mostly
based on gas lasers. Defined the first DPSS products and built the
solid state product line from scratch. He was the leading proponent
of the acquisition of Adlas, Coherent’s largest competitor in this
emerging market. With the merger of the two companies, created
the DPSS Business Unit.
5. Education
Other
1983-1992
Product Manager, then Director of Marketing
Provided the marketing leadership to enter the Ultrafast Laser
Market, which still is the largest scientific market for Coherent, with
also substantial industrial applications in the field of micro-
machining. Through strategic agreements and technology
developments, moved Coherent from being a peripheral player to
the dominant position in this market, still maintained as of today.
