Leading Companies Striving for Light-Weighting,
Fuel Efficiency & Emission Reduction
6. Expert Opinion
6.1 Saertex
The Saertex group is a global market leader in developing and producing glass, aramid and carbon
fibre multi-axial non-crimp fibres for use in manufacturing fibre-reinforced composites. Above all,
wind energy, shipbuilding, boat building, transport, automobile and aviation industries rely on
plastics strengthened with Saertex products.
The Saertex Group’s success began in 1982, in Westphalian Saerbeck. Today, the company has
grown to eight branch offices in seven countries across five continents. From here, the impulse for
innovative products, optimized process technologies and customized solutions go out to clients
and employees around the globe.
In January 2015, Visiongain spoke to Steven Bakker, spokesperson of Saertex for Application
Service. We thank him and Saertex for their contribution.
6.1.1 Saertex on their Involvement within Composites in the
Automotive Sector
Visiongain: Would you be able to give us a brief overview of Saertex and their involvement
within composites in the automotive sector?
Saertex: We at Saertex serve as a fabrics producer. We produce non crimp fabrics based on
carbon fiber, glass fiber and aramid. These fabrics can be either bound with an adhesive; we have
a special process to give some additional function to the textile. Within the automotive industry,
these fabrics are being used in injection processes such as RTM, to inject the resin in them to
make car parts. Our role for the automotive industry is basically to delve slightly further than simply
supplying the fabrics. We support our customers by doing mechanical trials and performing tests.
We very much try to help our customers at an early stage of the development process, to make
sure that at the end the most efficient solution comes out for them. That is one side of the
possibilities at Saertex.
Another side that we offer is that we are working on the development of organo-fit sheets; those
are thermoplastics together with a non-crimp fabric that can be processed by thermoforming.

Automotive Composites Market Forecast 2015-2025:
Leading Companies Striving for Light-Weighting,
Fuel Efficiency & Emission Reduction
7.2.2 BMW M&A Activity-SGL Group
In 2009 BMW collaborated with SGL Carbon, one of the larger Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic
(CFRP) manufacturers, to produce carbon fibre. The joint venture was of strategic importance
leading to the acquisition of SGL by BMW after the purchase of a 16% stake by BMW and 27% by
BMW owners, the Quandt family.
This acquisition occurred under the development of the company’s innovative ‘Project i’ – a
program aimed to develop a lightweight eco-friendly urban electric car designed to address the
mobility and sustainability needs for people who live in megacities. BMW’s new i-series range will
consist of various models with electric engines and very high levels of CFRP usage. From the
cooperation between the two companies the first CFRP car to be produced on a large scale, the
BMW i3, emerged in 2013.
7.2.3 Read About BMW’s i3, the first mass-produced carbon-fibre car
BMW’s response to offset the strict emission regulations coming in effect in 2015 and 2020 is a
viable electric vehicle for growing cities, the i3. The i3 is BMW's first zero emissions mass-
produced electric vehicle, having won numerous awards and much recognition over the past two
years. It won two prestigious “World Car of the Year” awards for the categories of “2014 World
Green Car of the Year” and “2014 World Car Design of the Year”. The i3 was also given an “iF
Product Design Gold Award”.
BMW is the first company to launch a volume production vehicle on the market featuring carbon-
fibre reinforced plastic to improve the vehicle's energy consumption. The carbon fibre cell saves up
to 200-300 kg to the vehicle’s weight comparing with a steel frame. Up to now, carbon fibre was
used only in high performance cars since its price can be up to 20 times higher than steel.
However, BMW has taken steps to mass produce carbon fibre in order to fuel its electric i3, the
upcoming i8 and a series of new i-models.
Mass production of the i3 began in September 2013. As of January 2015, the model has
successfully sold around 20,000 units in North America, Europe and Japan. Deliveries of the car in
South America began in late 2014. Indeed, sales of the model exceeded the company’s
expectations, as they had initially planned only to produce 10,000 units per year. The collaboration
will allow BMW to improve its position compared to competitor Audi; the current market leader in
lightweight premium vehicles with its aluminium structures. This new strategy will ensure that BMW
can remain one of the key players in the development of efficient, high performance vehicles and
will lead to the expansion of composite penetration.
