6. The Selfish Giant
by Oscar Wilde
Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go
and play in the Giant's garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the
grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees
that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl,
and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so
sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them.
"How happy we are here!" they cried to each other.
One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish
ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were
over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and
he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the
children playing in the garden.
"What are you doing here?" he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children
ran away.
"My own garden is my own garden," said the Giant; "any one can
understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself." So he built
a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.
TRESPASSERS
WILL BE
PROSECUTED
He was a very selfish Giant.
The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road,
but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it.
They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and
talk about the beautiful garden inside. "How happy we were there," they said
to each other.
School Times ,Oct 16 6
7. Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms
and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter. The
birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot
to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but
when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped
back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were
pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden,"
they cried, "so we will live here all the year round." The Snow covered up
the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees
silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He
was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the
chimney-pots down. "This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask the
Hail on a visit." So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the
roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and
round the garden as fast as he could go. He was dressed in grey, and his
breath was like ice.
"I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the Selfish
Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; "I
hope there will be a change in the weather."
But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit
to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He is too
selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and
the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.
One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely
music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's
musicians passing by.
School Times ,Oct 16 7
8. It was really only a little linnet singing outside his window, but it was so long
since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the
most beautiful music in the world. Then the Hail stopped dancing over his
head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a delicious perfume came to
him through the open casement. "I believe the Spring has come at last,"
said the Giant; and he jumped out of bed and looked out.
What did he see?
He saw a most wonderful sight. Through a little hole in the wall the children
had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In every tree
that he could see there was a little child. And the trees were so glad to have
the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms,
and were waving their arms gently above the children's heads. The birds
were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up
through the green grass and laughing. It was a lovely scene, only in one
corner it was still winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it
was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach up to the
branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly. The
poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind
was blowing and roaring above it. "Climb up! little boy," said the Tree, and it
bent its branches down as low as it could; but the boy was too tiny.
And the Giant's heart melted as he looked out. "How selfish I have been!"
he said; "now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that
poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and
my garden shall be the children's playground for ever and ever." He was
really very sorry for what he had done.
So he crept downstairs and opened the front door quite softly, and went out
into the garden. But when the children saw him they were so frightened that
they all ran away, and the garden became winter again. Only the little boy
did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he did not see the Giant
coming.
School Times ,Oct 16

9. And the Giant stole up behind him and took him gently in his hand, and put
him up into the tree. And the tree broke at once into blossom, and the birds
came and sang on it, and the little boy stretched out his two arms and flung
them round the Giant's neck, and kissed him. And the other children, when
they saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer, came running back, and
with them came the Spring. "It is your garden now, little children," said the
Giant, and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. And when the
people were going to market at twelve o'clock they found the Giant playing
with the children in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.
All day long they played, and in the evening they came to the Giant to bid
him good-bye.
"But where is your little companion?" he said: "the boy I put into the tree."
The Giant loved him the best because he had kissed him.
"We don't know," answered the children; "he has gone away."
"You must tell him to be sure and come here to-morrow," said the Giant. But
the children said that they did not know where he lived, and had never seen
him before; and the Giant felt very sad.
Every afternoon, when school was over, the children came and played with
the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again.
The Giant was very kind to all the children, yet he longed for his first little
friend, and often spoke of him. "How I would like to see him!" he used to
say.
Years went over, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He could not play
about any more, so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched the children at
their games, and admired his garden. "I have many beautiful flowers," he
said; "but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all."
School Times ,Oct 16 9
10. One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did
not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep,
and that the flowers were resting.
Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly
was a marvellous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite
covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver
fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had
loved.
Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened
across the grass, and came near to the child. And when he came quite
close his face grew red with anger, and he said, "Who hath dared to wound
thee?" For on the palms of the child's hands were the prints of two nails, and
the prints of two nails were on the little feet.
"Who hath dared to wound thee?" cried the Giant; "tell me, that I may take
my big sword and slay him."
"Nay!" answered the child; "but these are the wounds of Love."
"Who art thou?" said the Giant, and a strange awe fell on him, and he knelt
before the little child.
And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, "You let me play once in
your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is
Paradise."
And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead
under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

11. 5 Facts You Didn’t Know About The Indian Rupee Symbol –
₹Not only has the Indian rupee symbol ₹ given the Indian rupee a
visual recognition, it has also given it a distinct character
internationally. It was in 2010 when Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam's
design for the Indian rupee pushed aside 3000 other entries to get
the cabinet's approval.
• 1. Amalgamation of Devnagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R'
• The symbol is a perfect blend of Devnagri Ra and Roman R,
the letters derived from the word 'Rupiah' in 'Hindi' and
'Rupees' in 'English'.
General Knowledge
School Times ,Oct 16 11
12. • 2. Shrio Rekha - The horizontal line of Devnagri script
• While writing in Hindi, a horizontal line called Shrio Rekha is
drawn which is also a unique feature of Devnagri script. The
Rupee symbol preserves this feature of the Indian script.
• 3. The tricolour
• The symbol has two horizontal lines with equal negative white
space between them. It creates a background effect of three
stripes (tricolor) which subtly represent the Indian national flag
flying at the top.
School Times ,Oct 16 12
13. • 4. Equality sign
• The two horizontal lines also represent the arithmetic sign
'equal to' which signifies a balanced economy
• 5. Harmony in design
• Udaya Kumar designed the symbol keeping in mind the
existing symbols of other currencies. It looks like a part of the
symbol family while retaining its individuality at the same time.

14. Aim High to the Sky
by James McDonald
Aim high to the sky,
In all that you do.
Because you just never know,
What it takes to be you.
Be strong and be brave,
But at the same time be kind.
And always be sure,
That you’re using your mind.
Then Laugh
by Bertha Adams Backus
Build for yourself a strong box,
Fashion each part with care;
When it’s strong as your hand can
make it,
Put all your troubles there;
Hide there all thought of your
failures,
And each bitter cup that you quaff;
Lock all your heartaches within it,
Then sit on the lid and laugh.
Tell no one else its contents,
Never its secrets share;
When you’ve dropped in your care
and worry
Keep them forever there;
Hide them from sight so
completely
That the world will never dream
half;
Fasten the strong box securely-
Then sit on the lid and laugh.

19. Junk Food and Children Health
Dr. Vinit
The devil has put a penalty on all things we enjoy in life. Either we suffer in
health or we suffer in soul or we get fat.
---Albert Einstein
Today most of parents complain that their child does not eat and is
weak, falls ill frequently. If we go in detailed inquiry of food habits we find
that kids are eating super stars two minute food, chocolates, tedi medi
snacks etc filling their stomach with junk up to meal times and hence don’t
eat to parents healthy expectations at meal times.
Food habits have changed dramatically in last few decades, mostly for
bad. "Eat healthy and live healthy" is one of the essential requirements for
long life. Unfortunately, today’s world has been adapted to a system of
consumption of foods which has several adverse effects on health. Lifestyle
changes has compelled us so much that one has so little time to really think
what we are eating is right! Globalization and urbanization have greatly
affected one's eating habits and forced many people to consume fancy and
high calorie fast foods, popularly known as "Junk foods". Junk food is not
only a part of affluent but affects equally poor; rich goes for pasta and poor
goes for biscuits.
Lifestyles are modified to accommodate the new age and eating habits
too is no exception. Healthy nutritious foods have been replaced by the new
food funda - JUNK FOOD! The easy availability of junk food and snacks at
corners, at low prices and marketing strategies adapted by companies of
such foods has set a fashion wherein, consumption of these foods that
requires neither the structure nor the preparation of a traditional meals. It
seems to have engulfed every age; every race and the most affected are
children.
School Times ,Oct 16 19
20. Our country is no exception to this changing fast-food trend. India is fast-
food industry. One of the most respectable journal in scientific community
‘NATURE’ states that “Preventable diseases caused mainly due to smoking,
poor diet as junk food consumption and lack of exercise could kill millions in
developing world in the next 10 years.”
Junk food simply means an empty calorie food. An empty calorie food is
a high calorie or calorie rich food which lacks in micro- nutrients such as
vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fiber but has high energy (calories).
WHY JUNK FOOD FANCY YOU
Junk food is appealing in nature. Junk food comprises of anything that is
quick, tasty, convenient and fashionable. Clever junk food advertising and
the lure of convenience in addition to taste drag people to junk food
addiction. Factors that makes it appealing. Time factor: Junk food addiction
is so high because of its simplicity. They are easy to prepare and ready to
consume within no time. Taste factor: Great taste also, is another important
reason to an extent that influences to opt for junk food. This taste is
achieved owing to lavish usage of oils, salts and/or sugar. Attractiveness:
Packing of such foods has very attractive appearance by adding food
additives and colours in addition to enhancement in flavour. Ad factor:
Advertising has a major role in attracting the public, particularly children and
adolescents.
JUNK FOOD HURTS YOU
Junk food hurts your fitness. Junk food allows people to eat without
planning “eat not only when it is pre-set meal time, but also when they have
spare time”. Ingredients of junk foods give you a great taste and make them
School Times ,Oct 16 20
21. addictive. Fat and sugar in combination are capable of producing a
dopamine-driven surge of intense pleasure in people with a propensity for
addictive behaviour. High fat content, particularly cholesterol, sugar and
salts have their adverse effects on health. Soaring calorie content with
sugar can lead to obesity. Dense sugar content can cause dental cavities.
Cholesterol and salt are known to set off blood pressure, stroke and heart
diseases in a chain. Excessive salts can affect functioning of kidneys too.
Excess fats and oils along with spices added in these foods act as an irritant
to gastric mucosa leading to acidity. Poor concentration is another result of
junk food habit known to affect in immediate and medium term periods.
When a sumptuous junk meal rich in oil is taken, there is a feeling of
drowsiness and failure to concentrate. The junk food eating over a
sustainable period of time can drop blood circulation due to fat
accumulation. Lack of vital oxygen, nutrients and proteins particularly can
stale the grey (brain) cells temporarily. Most of the times these junk foods
contain colours, which are often inedible, carcinogenic and harmful to the
body. Flavourings and colourings can be allergic causing asthma, rashes
and hyperactivity. High cholesterol from junk food also affects liver on the
long run where it is metabolized as it strains liver, damaging it eventually.
CHILDREN THE MOST VULRENABLE
For kids ideas of food come from family but today they find themselves
amidst a complex changing society. Wafers, chips, colas, pizzas and
burgers are suddenly the most attractive food items among children
replacing traditional food idli, upma, halva, lasi etc. Children rapidly seem to
have stepped into a world of fast foods and vending machines, totally
unaware of the havoc they are creating for themselves and their impact on
their health. Good nutrition is of utmost priority in children at every age.
School Times ,Oct 16 21
22. Eating habits in children not only has an impact on their growth but also on
their concentration, feeling and behaviour. With vast majority mothers of
school children are working class which has led to leaving behind the
traditional foods at home and offering of fast foods. The commonest
scenario noticed in most homes is a child who returns from school hangs
himself in front of the television, faithfully accompanied by a bowl of wafers,
a packet of chips and a cold drink. Such nutritionally weak foods become
quickly addictive and can sow the seeds of infirmity and debilitating disease,
which ultimately leads to many an incurable disease. Studies reveal:
Beginning of clogging of arteries as early as at the age of 30. Risks of
prostate and breast cancer linked to their eating habits at puberty. Also
setting of hypertension and osteoporosis at an early age.
SAY “NO” TO JUNK FOOD
Awareness on junk food facts is lacking dramatically in every corner of
the society. Most of parents agree that junk food advertisements were
making it difficult for them to promote healthy eating at home. Messages for
healthy eating are getting undermined at every turn by the relentless
number of junk food advertisements. Hence every individual parent in the
society need to be educated about such foods and their impact on their
children's health, who can take care to avoid them intelligently and keeping
them out of the reach of their children.
Eating a healthy diet is a hard work. The only way to avoid junk food is to
encourage eating healthy snacks and more of the following foods, which are
usually considered to be a part of a healthy diet: foods that are low in fat,
saturated fat, and cholesterol, high-fiber foods, including whole-grain foods,
vegetables and fruits. Eat Foods that have only a moderate amount of
sugar and salt. Eat food that meets your vitamins, calcium and iron
School Times ,Oct 16 22
23. requirements. Measures need to be taken to correct food habits, especially
for children. Controlling children from eating junk foods in schools is a step
that helps in a long term. School administration along with parents has a
combined responsibility to educate children about avoiding junk foods in
school premises.
For many parents, helping children develop healthy eating habits is a
struggle. With the hectic pace of life and with more women working full time,
even health-conscious parents are finding it easy to tolerate less than
desirable eating habits. "A lot of parents don't want to struggle with the
issues so they give up, letting kids make their own choices. But children's
judgment is less mature and they still depend on parents to guide them. It is
best to start training children about foods as soon as they can talk since
they are most influenced by their families during the preschool years.
Parents should carefully read food labels to check nutrients and ingredients.
Most kids are attracted to the advertising and packaging of food, including
highly sugared cereals. Even those advertisements that say balanced with
nutrition are most deceptive. Occasionally go for an overall diet that is
focused on low sugar, low fat, and unprocessed foods. One should involve
young children in the food preparation process. For example, teach children
how to set the table during their preschool years. An old dictum “Family that
eats together stays together” still holds good for it will create a lasting bond
in family and also help parents to cultivate healthy eating habits in children.
Junk food - the name itself is tempting enough. Eliminating the
temptation is one way to avoid it. Keeping good food nearby and having
meals right on time certainly helps in this direction. Developing awareness
for fitness will .We need to begin a campaign against the marketing of
unhealthy foods to children. Amongst school children, many strategic ideas
can be incorporated in schools such as 'Bring fruit at school', which aims to

24. cut down at junk food consumption and its addiction promoting healthy food
habits among them. One should always remember that man basically was
someone who wandered in jungle for thousands of years eating what nature
gave him but in today’s concrete jungle we adapt for fast food. So be close
to nature, be healthy and stay fit.
