2. The Man Behind Newby
Nirmal Sethia’s connection with tea goes back as far as 1950s London,
when a chance encounter led to his appointment as a 14-year old appren-
tice tea taster. By 16, he had started his own tea buying business in Calcutta,
later buying a tea garden in Assam where he lived modestly, learning every
aspect of the craft.
His passion for quality was later to provide the motivation to establish a
company which truly valued the culture of tea – a commodity which had
become a mass-market staple, traded by an industry more concerned
with profit than provenance.
That company is Newby Teas.
Success was quickly forthcoming, proof that Newby was fulfilling a
genuine demand for the very best. An initial offering of a dozen
teas in the year 2000 has expanded to a range of more than
200, each one tasted and approved by Mr Sethia himself.
No company is better placed than Newby
to deliver on its promise of the highest quality teas.

Newby Teas is part-owned by the N. Sethia Foun-
dation, a UK-registered charity founded in 1995
which is heavily involved in projects including
the support of education, medical research,
disaster relief and hunger prevention.
Funded by the foundation, The Chitra Sethia
Centre for Robotics and Minimal Access Sur-
gery at University College Hospital has installed
robotic surgical systems to enable training
opportunities in cutting edge robotic and lap-
aroscopic surgery.
N. Sethia Foundation also provided substantial
funding to establish the Chitra Sethia Autism
Centre in Cambridge. This centre provides dia-
gnostic support and advice, and functions as a
drop-in centre for local autism support groups.
Other medical charities which have received the
support of the foundation include the British
Cardiac Research Trust, Diabetes UK and Chil-
dren with Leukaemia. Appeals for tsunami and
earthquake relief, and hunger prevention initi-
atives in India, have also benefitted.

Preserving the Heritage of Tea
Newby is as much about preserving the fascinating history of tea
as it is introducing today’s consumers to the craft behind each
cup. We keep tea heritage alive with our extensive collection of
antique teaware, The Chitra Collection.
The seeds of our founder Mr Sethia’s passion for fine tea were sown
more than 50 years ago, when he began working in London’s
tea industry. Over time, he came to learn about the nuances
of the leaves, the importance of preservation and the industry
practices which led to products falling below the high standards
he knew – with care and attention – were possible.
This vision led to the establishment of Newby as a tea company
like no other.
One of the world’s most comprehensive collections of tea antiques
provides thousands of years of tradition from which to draw
inspiration.
Newby Teas are teas worth taking your time over, creating a moment
to treasure in this busy world.

5. The tea leaves used by Newby are among the
finest available. Only first and second-flush
leaves, those picked in prime season from
March to August when they are at their fresh-
est, go into Newby products. Many compa-
nies continue to use the inferior and cheaper
leaves of the later flushes in their teas.
Approximately 5% of the leaves grown worldwide are
of a high enough standard for Newby’s consideration.
We only use hand-picked leaves, mostly by
the ‘fine-picked’ method which selects just
the bud and the top two leaves. Less precise
machine picking methods, common practice
elsewhere in the industry, are never used.
Most of our black teas come from India, from
areas such as Assam and Darjeeling, renowned
for their quality. The majority of our green teas
and oolongs come from China and Taiwan, and
Newby’s popular English Breakfast blend con-
tains some Kenyan teas. We also make use of
fine teas produced in the highlands of Sri Lanka
in our Ceylon blends, as well as Himalayan teas
in our special blends such as Kan-Junga.
The Newby range also includes several tisanes.
While infusions of this type are commonly known
as ‘herbal teas’, they are not technically teas as
they do not originate from the Camellia Sinensis
plant. These soothing drinks, in flavours such as
Peppermint and Ginger & Lemon, have proven
particularly popular in settings such as spas
and health clubs.

6. Why Newby?
Quality First
At Newby, quality is our number one priority.
Using just the leaves of a single estate means
standards can vary from year to year. That’s
why we select only the finest leaves from a
variety of tea gardens, picked at their most
tender. Our expert tasters in India sample
thousands of harvests, with their recommen-
dations sent to our founder and tea specialist,
Mr Sethia. Only after he has personally tasted
and approved each tea will it be ready to bear
the Newby name.
Total Quality Control
Newby’s state-of-the-art factory in Kolkata,
India consistently achieves an ‘A’ rating for food
safety from BRC Global Standards, a leading
quality certification program used in more than
120 countries. ISO and HACCP accredited, the
Newby team here are experts in every step of
the process. Each variety of tea we offer is cared
for in a different way, ensuring its unique charac-
teristics are preserved for optimal enjoyment.
Character Sealed in for Freshness
When your tea is as special as ours, you need
to make sure it stays that way throughout its
journey. Newby’s specially designed multi-lay-
ered packaging was conceived to ensure the
tea inside arrives in the cup at its very best.
The multi-functional protection keeps light,
heat, moisture and odours at bay, all of which
can adversely affect teas transported in less
considered conditions. It’s all part of the Newby
commitment to serve the only finest and fresh-
est of flavours.
