Book Kernel is an event-
based publishing service
that captures your
event in book form and
delivers it to you before
that event has ended.
We make it easy to
organise, and comment
on, ideas, talks and
discussions.
We give people the tools to
select what’s useful and
relevant to them.
We create a legacy of
shared experiences and
help the spread of ideas.
We produce living books
that evolve over time.
4. How does it work?
Before the event
you decide how you want to work with us,
and what would best serve your event. We
prepare the basic book and a structure
that fits around your event. We work
with you to bring together the speakers
notes, biographies, and other information
that you want to include. For the digital
version, Audio Visual material can also
be included.
During the event
one of our highly skilled Book Pilots will
collect the contextual information (such
as tweets, photographs, and commentary
from various participants) that is
generated in real time and include it in
the book. As it is being created, the book
can be available online to delegates to
reflect on and refer back to at any time
during the event.
At the end of the event
you may want a number of limited edition
printed books to give to VIPs. As part
of your bespoke package, these can be
produced, printed, and delivered to the
venue before your event has ended. After
the event we will provide you with a digital
book that can be downloaded by your
delegates. And we can arrange to send
printed copies to your delegates.

Book Kernel giving you a legacy Book Kernel turning the ‘what ifs’ into a reality
Your event in their hands
You’ve worked hard to develop
the theme, brought inspirational
speakers together, and created a
heady mix that your delegates are
keen to soak up.
You want them to remember; to
share and spread the word.
You want those ideas to live on.

You want to be able to takeaway
as much as you can from your
experience, to remember the ideas
and thoughts that have inspired you
and share them with your colleagues.
How do you ensure that your
delegates get the most out of
your event?
Give them delegate papers?
Produce videos? Create forums?
What if you could give your delegates
the most effective way to remember,
capture, and organise those ideas?
What if you gave them the means to
create a legacy?
What if, you were given all the
speakers notes, bios, and contacts?
Together with thoughts and ideas
shared during the day?
What if you could organise this
information in a way you could easily
share with your colleagues?
And.. what if you could do all this
without having to take endless notes
or even write a report?

The living book is not a new concept,
rather it is one that had been forgotten,
until two people asked ‘What if?’
Books have long recorded the thoughts,
reflections, and ideas of countless
civilizations allowing succeeding
generations to learn from them. Books
often remain an end in themselves and
are perceived as a static interpretation
of events or an authoritative voice on a
subject. But what if these books could
live on, beyond their first incarnation and
evolve over time?
Book Kernel was conceived out of a
desire to capture the everchanging nature
of language and translated text.
Translating is an art. This is particularly
true when translating poetry, which can
have many layers of meaning; making it
difficult to convey its full depth in other
languages.
Dr Alexis Nuselovici challenged Dr Bambo
Soyinka to create a living book. A book that
could evolve during an event and capture
different interpretations in one place.
As a result, Book Kernel was born…

Case Study:
In the beginning there was Dylan…
In Your Translating Eyes was a
one-day event, hosted by Prof Alexis
Nuselovici (Nouss) and Dr Cristina
Marinetti of Cardiff University –
School of European Languages,
Translation, and Politics.
Translators from all over the world paid
homage to Dylan Thomas at his birthplace
in Swansea; celebrating the international
impact of his poetry by working on
instantaneous translations and
performing them.
The day featured work by poets Philip
Gross, Richard Gwyn, and John Goodby
who gave their contemporary view of Dylan
Thomas’ poetry. Guests were encouraged
to take part in the live-translations with
their own comments and suggestions,
and these live-translations were digitally
edited and printed in real-time through
Book Kernel.
Book Kernel’s first outing had
successfully documented an historic
moment, creating a living book of
multiple perspectives on Dylan Thomas’
most loved poems.
