Dear Friends,
We are extremely proud of the success SVEF has achieved over this past
year. Thanks to the support of our many partners, we have seen our
programs grow significantly, improving the academic performance of even
more Silicon Valley students. In 2015, thanks to your support, SVEF has
put more students back on the track for college and careers through our
impactful programs and advocacy efforts.
Elevate [Math], our flagship program, helps students at risk of failing 8th
grade math get back on track for college and career success. Last summer,
an independent study by WestEd, the regional laboratory for the U.S.
Department of Education, formally validated the effectiveness of Elevate
[Math]. Based on these findings, we plan to triple the number of students
we serve over the next year.
At our 2015 Pioneers & Purpose, SVEF honored John Doerr and raised
over 1.3 million dollars. SVEF also hosted our inaugural Silicon Valley
Wine Auction at Levi’s® Stadium, in partnership with the Santa Cruz
Mountain Winegrowers Association, drawing more than 1,000 guests to
benefit our STEM education programs.
We invite you to see how your contributions and support in 2015 have
helped strengthen our programs to elevate achievement for all students.
Thank you for your continued support and generosity.
Sincerely,
Muhammed Chaudhry

ELEVATE [MATH]
ELEVATE [MATH] WORKS!
In 2015, WestEd - the
regional education
laboratory of the U.S.
Department of Education
released findings from
a year long randomized
controlled trial study.
The study proved
Elevate [Math] nearly doubled
the number of students that
were algebra ready in only 19
days compared to the control
group.
Elevate [Math] is an intensive 75-hour summer intervention program that prepares
targeted incoming 8th graders for success in Common Core 8 Math by providing
them with a solid base from which to build their math skills.
Research indicates 8th grade math is one of the final opportunities for students
to get on track to complete high school math courses that are critical to ensuring
college and career readiness.
Elevate [Math] was also
proven to be 2 times more
effective than similar
intervention programs.
Elevate [Math] has served over
6,500 students since the programs
inception in 2008.
This past summer, 1160
targeted students participated
in Elevate [Math]. Additionally,
Elevate [Math] Plus supported
400 8th grade students during
the school year.
Elevate [Math] scaled to serve
27 Districts in 2015, compared to
only 4 when the program started in
2008. District expansion in 2015
included new districts in San Mateo
and Santa Cruz Counties.
Elevate [Math] hosted more than 50
volunteers from corporate partners
including, NVIDIA, EY, and Cisco.

Formalized in 2013, the
East Side Alliance (ESA) is a
collective impact initiative
bringing together East Side
Union High School District
(ESUHSD), its seven feeder
elementary school districts,
San Jose State University
(SJSU), and Evergreen
Community College to
create a seamless Pre-K to
college (PK-16) pathway for
students.
EAST SIDE ALLIANCE
The ESA consists of eight
partner districts and more
than 70 nonprofit partners
that together serve a student
population of over 85,000 that,
if unified, would be the third
largest district in the state.
Historically, the PK-12 school
districts in this region have
operated independently.
The ESA strives to leverage
resources towards a common
goal of improving student
performance and eliminating
the troubling achievement gap
between socio-economic and
ethnic groups.

A-G REQUIREMENTS
In California, the UC/CSU public universities require applicants to have successfully
completed a set of 15 high school course requirements that cover a variety of subjects,
including 3 tiers of math through Algebra II. These classes establish a foundation for
college-level work. The grades that students receive in these classes can be predictors
for how well they will perform in college. Because these course requirements are lettered
from “A” to “G,” they are collectively referred to as the “A-G Requirements.”
These courses are different
than those required by
the state of California or
individual school districts
for high school graduation
– as districts establish
their own high school
graduation requirements.
In California, only 42% of
students have completed
the A-G requirements by the
time they graduate from
high school; this means
that 58% of students are not
eligible to attend a public
university - which for the
majority of students are the
only schools they have the
resources to attend.
SVEF advocates that all high
school districts adopt the
A-G requirements as the
default curriculum for all
students.
In 2011, only 13% of Santa Clara
students were enrolled in High
Schools with an A-G Default.
Since then, SVEF has supported
districts in adopting an A-G
Default Curriculum and that
number has grown to 74%
impacting more than 44,490
students.
In the years since the East
Side Union High School District
made the UC/CSU A-G entrance
requirements the default
curriculum (2011-2014) the A-G
completion rate has steadily
increased from 34% to 42% of
graduates.*
*Change only applied to the class of 2015.

  • 3. Dear Friends, We are extremely proud of the success SVEF has achieved over this past year. Thanks to the support of our many partners, we have seen our programs grow significantly, improving the academic performance of even more Silicon Valley students. In 2015, thanks to your support, SVEF has put more students back on the track for college and careers through our impactful programs and advocacy efforts. Elevate [Math], our flagship program, helps students at risk of failing 8th grade math get back on track for college and career success. Last summer, an independent study by WestEd, the regional laboratory for the U.S. Department of Education, formally validated the effectiveness of Elevate [Math]. Based on these findings, we plan to triple the number of students we serve over the next year. At our 2015 Pioneers & Purpose, SVEF honored John Doerr and raised over 1.3 million dollars. SVEF also hosted our inaugural Silicon Valley Wine Auction at Levi’s® Stadium, in partnership with the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association, drawing more than 1,000 guests to benefit our STEM education programs. We invite you to see how your contributions and support in 2015 have helped strengthen our programs to elevate achievement for all students. Thank you for your continued support and generosity. • 6. ELEVATE [MATH] ELEVATE [MATH] WORKS! In 2015, WestEd - the regional education laboratory of the U.S. Department of Education released findings from a year long randomized controlled trial study. The study proved Elevate [Math] nearly doubled the number of students that were algebra ready in only 19 days compared to the control group. Elevate [Math] is an intensive 75-hour summer intervention program that prepares targeted incoming 8th graders for success in Common Core 8 Math by providing them with a solid base from which to build their math skills. Research indicates 8th grade math is one of the final opportunities for students to get on track to complete high school math courses that are critical to ensuring college and career readiness. Elevate [Math] was also proven to be 2 times more effective than similar intervention programs.
  • 7. Elevate [Math] has served over 6,500 students since the programs inception in 2008. This past summer, 1160 targeted students participated in Elevate [Math]. Additionally, Elevate [Math] Plus supported 400 8th grade students during the school year. Elevate [Math] scaled to serve 27 Districts in 2015, compared to only 4 when the program started in 2008. District expansion in 2015 included new districts in San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties. Elevate [Math] hosted more than 50 volunteers from corporate partners including, NVIDIA, EY, and Cisco. • 8. Formalized in 2013, the East Side Alliance (ESA) is a collective impact initiative bringing together East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD), its seven feeder elementary school districts, San Jose State University (SJSU), and Evergreen Community College to create a seamless Pre-K to college (PK-16) pathway for students. EAST SIDE ALLIANCE The ESA consists of eight partner districts and more than 70 nonprofit partners that together serve a student population of over 85,000 that, if unified, would be the third largest district in the state. Historically, the PK-12 school districts in this region have operated independently. The ESA strives to leverage resources towards a common goal of improving student performance and eliminating the troubling achievement gap between socio-economic and ethnic groups.

  • 12. A-G REQUIREMENTS In California, the UC/CSU public universities require applicants to have successfully completed a set of 15 high school course requirements that cover a variety of subjects, including 3 tiers of math through Algebra II. These classes establish a foundation for college-level work. The grades that students receive in these classes can be predictors for how well they will perform in college. Because these course requirements are lettered from “A” to “G,” they are collectively referred to as the “A-G Requirements.” These courses are different than those required by the state of California or individual school districts for high school graduation – as districts establish their own high school graduation requirements. In California, only 42% of students have completed the A-G requirements by the time they graduate from high school; this means that 58% of students are not eligible to attend a public university - which for the majority of students are the only schools they have the resources to attend. SVEF advocates that all high school districts adopt the A-G requirements as the default curriculum for all students. In 2011, only 13% of Santa Clara students were enrolled in High Schools with an A-G Default. Since then, SVEF has supported districts in adopting an A-G Default Curriculum and that number has grown to 74% impacting more than 44,490 students. In the years since the East Side Union High School District made the UC/CSU A-G entrance requirements the default curriculum (2011-2014) the A-G completion rate has steadily increased from 34% to 42% of graduates.* *Change only applied to the class of 2015.
