3. The Land
of the New Testament
WHEN APOSTLE PAUL embarked on his missionary journeys
to spread the great news of the gospel, he visited many of the lead-
ing Greek and Roman cultural centers across the Mediterranean.
As Christianity and its followers radically transformed the con-
temporary world, so too did these cities and cultures influence the
development of this new faith. The Greek language, with its great
heritage, would become the language of the New Testament.
THE ROMAN EMPIRE, with its communication networks and
travel routes, would allow the spread of the Gospel and the accep-
tance of Jesus’ teachings. As we travel throughout Greece, we will
learn of this interaction between Christianity and classical
cultures by visiting these very centers
where Paul and the early Christians
paved the way for countless
generations of believers.
