Highlights:

1. Great Sphinx of Giza

The Sphinx was carved over 4,500 years ago. It was for the Pharaoh Khafre. It had his head, the body
of a lion. The Sphinx was carved out of a huge big stone. It is guarding Khafre's pyramid. The Sphinx
was covered by sand which preserved it all these years. Its body is extremely soft rock and its head is
very strong rock but some people used the head for gunshot practice. No one knows for sure what it
was decorated with in the days of the Ancient Egyptians but it must have been ver y beautiful then.

2. Egypt ian Pyramid

The Pyramids were constructed to hide the tombs of the Pharaohs. The first pyramids were step
pyramids to help the pharaoh climb the steps and join the sun god Ra in the sky. After that (about
4,500 years ago) came the biggest pyramids of all, the pyramids of kings Khufu and Khafre. Until about
a hundred years ago these pyramids were the tallest structures in the w orld! No ear thquake could
destroy them. They were each built of more than 2 million blocks of stone, w hich each weighed about
as much as a small elephant. The limestone coverings were stripped by later peoples for building use.
In the pyramids were a lot of false doors to trick grave robbers but they didn't wor k!

monaster y has been called the oldest w orking Christian monastery in the world – although
the Monaster y of Saint Anthony, situated across the Red Sea in the desert south of Cairo, Saint
Catherine Monastery has been one of the world’s great center s of religious pilgrimage for over fifteen
centuries. Within its imposing walls rests a citadel like no other, incredibly rich in impor tant religious
and historical structures. Among its treasures is a library of ancient manuscripts and icons second only
to the Vatican's itself, and a 6th centur y church reputed to lie directly on the site of the Burning Bush.

St. Cather ine’s Monasteries Chapel of the burning bush

Highlights:

1. Chapel of the Burning Bush

The monastery's spiritual heart is the Chapel o f the Burning Bush, an unassuming str ucture of
tremendous religious significance. According the oldest monastic tradition, this chapel sits atop the
roots of the same Biblical bush "that burned with fire, and was not consumed" (Exodus 3:2) when God
spoke to Moses for the first time. A few feet away from the Chapel is the reputed bush itself, a rare
species of the rose family called Rubus Sanctus. This species is endemic to Sinai and extremely long -
lived, a fact that lends scientific credence to the site. The sprawling bush is said to have been
transplanted in the tenth century, when the chapel was given a roof. Today, it is very large in size, and
many monks and scholars agree that the bush's presence is the ver y reason St. Catherine's Monastery
developed in the first place.

2. Fountain of Moses:

The Fountain of Moses, an underground spring that supplies the monastery with water, is said to sit on
the very spot w here Moses met his future wife, Zipporah, after protecting her and her sisters from an
aggressive group of local shepher ds (Exodus, 2, 16-21). According to the monks, the well never dries
up, and it is the monaster y's main source of water.

After breakfast at the hotel, proceed to the Mt. of Olives for a panoramic view of Jerusalem where one
could visit the sanctuaries of Pater Noster Ascension & walk along the Palm Sunday Road down to the
Chapel of Dominous Flevit and Garden of Gethsemane. Later visit the Church of Agony and St. Peters in
Galicantu. Then drive to Mt. Zion via Kidron Valley to visit Dormition Abbey / Room of the last Supper

Room of Last Supper Kidron Valley Shepherd’s Field

Highlights:

1. Kidron Valley

Separated from the Eastern Hill (the Temple Mount and the City of David) by the Kidron Valley, the Mt.
of Olives has always been an important feature in Jerusalem's landscape. From the 3rd millennium
B.C. until the present, this 2900-foot hill has served as one of the main burial grounds for the city. The
two-mile long ridge has three summits each of w hich has a tower built on it

2. Dome of the Ascension

The Church of the Holy Ascension was taken by Saladin in 1187 and converted into a mosque and
remains such today. It contains what is traditionally the last footprint of Jesus on earth before he
ascended into hea ven.
Two other places are claimed to be the location of the ascension. Constantine's mother Helena built a
church under the modern Paternoster Church to commemorate this event. A much later tradition
connects the Russian Or thodox Church of the Ascension to Christ's return into heaven. Scripture
indicates that the Jesus ascended into heaven in the vicinity of Bethany. This village is down the east
slope of the Mt. of Olives about 1.5 miles (2 km).

3. Gar den of Gethsemane

Early Christian pilgrims locate d the Garden of Gethsemane at the bottom of the slope of the Mt. of
Olives opposite the Temple Mount. Byzantine, Crusader and a moder n church were built successively
on the site where it is believed that Jesus prayed to the Father hours before his crucifi xion. The
modern Church of All Nations has a beautiful mosaic on its facade.
                                                                                                         Page | 6
4. Olive Trees in the Garden of Gethsemane

Adjacent to the Church of All Nations is an ancient olive garden. Olive trees do not have rings and so
their age can not be precisely determined, but scholars estimate their age to anyw here between one
and two thousand years old. It is unlikely that these trees were here in the time of Christ because of
the report that the Romans cut down all the trees in the area in their siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.

5. Dominus Flev it Church

Built in 1955 to commemorate the Lord's weeping over Jerusalem, Dominus Flevit features a beautiful
view of the city through its distinct chapel window. Excavations during construction of the church
uncovered a number of ossuaries (bone boxes) from the time of Jesus with numerous inscripti on

Visitation & St John’s church. Later in the after noon, drive to Jericho, the oldest city on Earth. Visit the

main interest about Dead Sea water is that it has tremendous therapeutic value and the you keep
floating in this water without any fear of drowning. Later in the evening return to the hotel for dinner
and overnight stay in Jerusalem.

  The Holy Tomb Mt.of.Temptation Calvary

Highlights:

1. Western Wall Plaza

The Western Wall is the most holy place accessible to the Jewish people because of Muslim control of
the Temple Mount. Known in recent centuries as the "Wailing Wall," this was built by Herod the Great
as the retaining wall of the Temple Mount complex. The plaza was created as an area for prayer w hen
Israel captured the Old City in 1967. At times tens of thousands of people gather here for prayer.

2. Dome with Mt. of Olives

The Mt. of Olives overlooks the Temple Mount from the east and gives a picture of Jesus weeping over
the city from the Mt. of Olives (Luke 19:41). From the Temple Mount Jesus delivered the famous "7
Woes" against the Pharisees (Matt 23), probably pointing at tombs on the Mt. of Olives in his discourse
(v. 27) Jesus ascension probably took place some distance behind the tower of the Russian Orthodox Page | 8
Church located here.

3. Al Aqsa Mosque

More important to the Muslims than the Dome of the Rock is Al Aqsa Mosque. Believing that this is the
place referred to in the Koran as "al aqsa" (the furthermost), Muslims have sanctified this as the third
most holy place in the Muslim world (after shrines in Mecca and Medina, both in Saudi Arabia ). The
original mosque was built in 715 but it has been destroyed numerous times by ear thquakes.

4. The Garden Tomb

While officially the Gar den Tomb Association only maintains this as a possible site for Christ's burial,
some tour guides of the site are convinced of the authenticity. They note the large cistern near by,
which proves the area must have been a garden in Jesus' day. They maintain that there are marks of
Christian veneration at the tomb which also prove its sanctity throughout the ages.

Highlights:

1. Tiber ias:

Tiberias has been a popular destination for tourists for more than 2,000 years. As early
as Roman times, this thriving recreation spa, built around 17 natural mineral hot springs more than 600
feet below sea level, welcomed visitors from every part of the ancient world. Built by Herod Antipas
(one of Herod the Great's three sons who divided up Palestine after their father's death), the city was
named Tiberias in honor of the Roman Emperor Tiberius.

2. Megiddo

Megiddo is located near the site of the several Battles of Megiddo and Tel Megiddo, a rich
archeological site. In the Israelite time it was a tow n, par t of the tribe of Manasseh (1 Chronicles 7:29). Page | 10
In 2005, Israeli archeologists discovered the remains of an ancient church, perhaps the eldest in
the Holy Land under the grounds of the militar y prison. Authorities are speculating about moving the
prison so the site can be accessible to tourists. In apocalyptic literature, Mount Megiddo, the hill
overlooking the valley where the current kibbutz is located, is identified as the site of the final battle
between the forces of good and evil at the end of time, known as Armageddon (mentioned in the New
Testament in Revelation 16:16).

3. Armageddon: Mount of Megiddo

Megiddo--the ruins of which are Tel Megiddo--is an ancient, fortified city near the mouth of the Jezreel
Valley in moder n-day Israel. some historians believe that this city in the Near East was the site of more
battles than any other place in history. The citizens of Megiddo, at different times in the city’s history,
faced off against the various armies of Assyria, Canaan, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Persia, Philistine, and
Rome. Even a decisive battle between English and Ottoman forces occurred near there in World War I.
The city, which was inhabitied continuously from 7000-500 BCE, was no doubt defended and
conquered so many times due to its position along antiquity’s major superhighway, the Via Maris. From
Megiddo its rulers were able to exert control of an entire region, having only to defend the extremely
narrow Aruna pass. With its seemingly endless cycle of conquest and revolt, it is no wonder the Hebrew
mythmakers set the final battle known as "Armageddon" (literally the mount of Megiddo) here.

Day 07: TIBERIAS

Sea of Galilee Mount of Beat itudes Tabgha

                                                                                                             Page | 11

After breakfast in hotel, proceed for a full day tour staring with the boat ride across the Sea of Galilee
where Jesus walked on the waters. Visit Mt. of Beatitudes w here Jesus delivered his first sermon,
Tabgha, the site of multiplication of loaves and fishes and the primacy of St. Peter and Caper naum
where the childhood of Jesus was spent, later retur n to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay in
Tiberias.

Highlights:

1. The Sea of Galilee

Tiberias sits along the 32-mile shoreline of the Sea of Galilee. The Sea lies roughly 650 feet below sea
level and is 14 miles long and 7 1/2 miles wide at its widest point. T he Sea is the major source of
fresh water for the entire country. T he Sea, really a lake, lies on the ancient "Via Maris," a route that
linked Egypt and Mesopotamia. The New Testament contains several references to the lake, which is
know n alternatively as the Sea of Galilee, Sea of Tiberias and the Sea of Gennesaret. This is where
Jesus calmed the stormy sea (Mathew 8) and walked on the water (Mathew 14). The Sea of Galilee is
shaped like a harp, kinnor in Hebrew, but this is not where the name of the lake comes from. Israelis
call the Sea by the biblical name Kinneret. This was the name of a city on the northwestern edge of
the lake during the Canaanite and Israelite periods. The reference to the Sea of Tiberias is attributable
to the newer riparian city.

2. Mount of beatitudes:

The Sea of Galilee near Tabgha, the Mount of Beatitudes is the traditional site of Jesus' deliver y of
the Sermon on the Mount, probably the most famous sermon of all time. Pilgrims have been drawn to
this scenic place since at least the 4th centur y. The Catholic Church on the Mount of Beatitudes is
Byzantine in style. Its octagonal shape represents the eight beatitudes. It has a marble veneer casing
the lower walls and gold mosaic in the dome. The chief attraction here, though, is the setting. The
cool and quiet gardens overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the landscape where Jesus conducted his
ministr y make an excellent place to contemplate some of the best-known Christian teachings.

site along the Jordan River valley. Retur n to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Highlights:

1. Basilica of the Annunciat ion, Nazareth

The Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth is a modern Catholic church built over the remains of
Byzantine and Crusader churches. It incorporates the cave in which the Virgin Mary received the news
from Gabriel that she w ould give birth to Jesus. The site has been a pilgrimage destination since
earliest times and remains an important stop for Holy Land pilgrims today. The modern Church of the
Annunciation is topped with a uniquely-shaped concrete dome 55 meters high. Its shape is based on
the Madonna lily, a symbol of the Virgin Mar y. Inside, the basilica consists of an upper church and a
lower church. The vast upper church is decorated with mosaics of the Vir gin donated by communities
from around the world. The lower church centers on the Grotto or Cave of the Annunciation, where the
angelic announcement to Mary is believed to have occurred. Also visible down here are remains of the
Byzantine and Crusader churches that preceded the present one.

2. Mary’s well:

Mary's Well is located in the center of the downtown Nazareth, on the main road. The site is actually a
modern water trough, w hich was built over the ancient trough, which was used by the women and
animals as drinking water. The well gets its water by pipes from a natural spring about 200 M north of
the well, and was used throughout the ages. According to the tradition, this was the place where
Virgin Mar y, Mother of Jesus, was announced by the angel Gabriel that she will have a son of God. Page | 13

3. Bapt ismal Site:

The Baptism Site (Arabic: el-Maghtas) on the Jordan side of the Jordan River is one of the most
important recent discoveries in biblical archaeology. Excavations only began here in 1996, following
Jordan's peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but have already uncovered more than 20 churches, caves
and baptismal pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Although the identification is not
absolutely certain, archaeology has show n that the area know n as Wadi Kharrar has long been believed
to be the biblicalBethany-beyond-the- Jordan, where John the Baptist lived and Jesus was baptized. This
area is also associated with the ascension of the Prophet Elijah into heaven, which is commemorated at
a hill called Tell Mar Elias.

Note: This Bethany should not be confused wit h Bethany in Jerusalem, where Mary
Magdalene lived and Lazar us was raised from the dead.

4. Deborah's Battle

The Israelite tribes gathered on Mount Tabor in the days of Deborah. The Canaanites were assembled
at Harosheth Haggoyim (likely on the opposite side of the Jezreel Valley) and Barak led the Israelite
charge of 10,000 men against Sisera's army. It seems that the Lord's intervention on behalf of the
Israelites was in the form of a rainstorm, such that the Kishon River flooded and made chariot travel for
the Canaanites impossible (Judges 4-5).

5. The Transfiguration

Mt. Tabor is probably not the location for the Transfiguration: 1) Jesus and his disciples are in the
region of Caesarea Philippi just prior to the Transfiguration. 2) The general location of the mountain is
not isolated. Much traffic passed by through the Jezreel Valley below. 3) A militar y fort was located on
top of the mountain and was clearly in use during the Hasmonean period and the time of the Jewish
Revolt, and likely would have been in Jesus' day as well.

Day 10: AMMA N – DEPARTURE

Mt. Nebo Madaba Church Amman, Jordan

                                                                                                                                      Page | 14

Check out from the hotel and transfer to Allenby border terminal and cross over to the Jordan side. Drive to the top of Mt. Nebo,
where Moses is presumably buried. Visit the ancient Church atop the Mount having the old mosaics. This is the place upto which
Moses came and died. From there, Joshua marched into the Promised Land and conquered Jericho which is across the Dead Sea
and can be seen from the mountain. Later, visit Madaba Church having mosaics of ancient Jerusalem. Transfer to hotel in
Amman for dinner and overnight stay in Amman.

Highlights:

1. Mount Nebo:

Mount Nebo is a 1,000m (3,300ft) high mountain located 10km/6 mi NW of Madaba in Jordan, opposite the northern end of the
Dead Sea. According to ancient tradition, this is the mountain from which Moses saw the Promised Land before he died. Because
of its connection to Moses, Mt. Nebo has long been an important place of Christian pilgrimage. Excavations led by the
Franciscans, who own the site, have uncovered significant remains of the early church and its magnificent Byzantine mosaics. A
simple modern shelter dedicated to Moses has been built over them. Mount Nebo offers spectacular viewsof the Promised Land
as seen by Moses. On the platform at the summit is a modern sculpture by an Italian artist representing Moses' staff and Jesus'
words. The Old Baptistery mosaic is in remarkably pristine condition because another one was laid over it just a few decades
later in 597. The underlying mosaic remained hidden for nearly 1,400 years until it was discovered in 1976 when the one on to p
was removed for restoration (it now hangs on a wall).

2. Madaba Church:

Madaba is a medium-sized city in Jordan, located 25km southwest of Amman. Madaba has become known as the "City of the
Mosaics" for the many Byzantine mosaics that have been uncovered throughout the city. The most famous of these is
the Madaba Map, a 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. he Madaba Mosaic Map is a map of Holy Land dating from the 6th
century AD, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George. With two million pieces of colored stone, the
map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns in Palestine and the Nile Delta. The mosaic contains the earliest extant
representation of Jerusalem, labeled the "Holy City" (Η ΑΓΙΑ ΠΟΛ ΙC). The map has been a major key in developing scholarly
knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem after its destruction and rebuilding in 70 AD. Hundred of other mosaics from
the 5th through the 7th centuries are scattered throughout Madaba. Other mosaic masterpieces - such as in the Church of the
Virgin, the Church of the Apostles and the Archaeological Park - depict flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic
beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing and farming.

Great Sphinx of Giza The Sphinx was carved over 4,500 years ago. It was for the Pharaoh Khafre. It had his head, the body of a lion. The Sphinx was carved out of a huge big stone. It is guarding Khafre's pyramid. The Sphinx was covered by sand which preserved it all these years. Its body is extremely soft rock and its head is very strong rock but some people used the head for gunshot practice. No one knows for sure what it was decorated with in the days of the Ancient Egyptians but it must have been ver y beautiful then. 2. Egypt ian Pyramid The Pyramids were constructed to hide the tombs of the Pharaohs. The first pyramids were step pyramids to help the pharaoh climb the steps and join the sun god Ra in the sky. After that (about 4,500 years ago) came the biggest pyramids of all, the pyramids of kings Khufu and Khafre. Until about a hundred years ago these pyramids were the tallest structures in the w orld! No ear thquake could destroy them. They were each built of more than 2 million blocks of stone, w hich each weighed about as much as a small elephant. The limestone coverings were stripped by later peoples for building use. In the pyramids were a lot of false doors to trick grave robbers but they didn't wor k! Chapel of the Burning Bush The monastery's spiritual heart is the Chapel o f the Burning Bush, an unassuming str ucture of tremendous religious significance. According the oldest monastic tradition, this chapel sits atop the roots of the same Biblical bush "that burned with fire, and was not consumed" (Exodus 3:2) when God spoke to Moses for the first time. A few feet away from the Chapel is the reputed bush itself, a rare species of the rose family called Rubus Sanctus. This species is endemic to Sinai and extremely long - lived, a fact that lends scientific credence to the site. The sprawling bush is said to have been transplanted in the tenth century, when the chapel was given a roof. Today, it is very large in size, and many monks and scholars agree that the bush's presence is the ver y reason St. Catherine's Monastery developed in the first place. 2. Fountain of Moses: The Fountain of Moses, an underground spring that supplies the monastery with water, is said to sit on the very spot w here Moses met his future wife, Zipporah, after protecting her and her sisters from an aggressive group of local shepher ds (Exodus, 2, 16-21). According to the monks, the well never dries up, and it is the monaster y's main source of water. MODERN TOWERS, 5th Floor, 35/23 Wes tcott Road, Roya pettah, Chennai – 600 014 Ms.Anita – 9841651255

It contains what is traditionally the last footprint of Jesus on earth before he ascended into hea ven. Two other places are claimed to be the location of the ascension. Constantine's mother Helena built a church under the modern Paternoster Church to commemorate this event. A much later tradition connects the Russian Or thodox Church of the Ascension to Christ's return into heaven. Scripture indicates that the Jesus ascended into heaven in the vicinity of Bethany. This village is down the east slope of the Mt. of Olives about 1.5 miles (2 km). MODERN TOWERS, 5th Floor, 35/23 Wes tcott Road, Roya pettah, Chennai – 600 014 Ms.Anita – 9841651255

Byzantine, Crusader and a moder n church were built successively on the site where it is believed that Jesus prayed to the Father hours before his crucifi xion. The modern Church of All Nations has a beautiful mosaic on its facade. Page | 6 4. Olive Trees in the Garden of Gethsemane Adjacent to the Church of All Nations is an ancient olive garden. Olive trees do not have rings and so their age can not be precisely determined, but scholars estimate their age to anyw here between one and two thousand years old. It is unlikely that these trees were here in the time of Christ because of the report that the Romans cut down all the trees in the area in their siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. 5. From the Temple Mount Jesus delivered the famous "7 Woes" against the Pharisees (Matt 23), probably pointing at tombs on the Mt. of Olives in his discourse (v. 27) Jesus ascension probably took place some distance behind the tower of the Russian Orthodox Page | 8 Church located here. 3. Al Aqsa Mosque More important to the Muslims than the Dome of the Rock is Al Aqsa Mosque. Believing that this is the place referred to in the Koran as "al aqsa" (the furthermost), Muslims have sanctified this as the third most holy place in the Muslim world (after shrines in Mecca and Medina, both in Saudi Arabia ). The original mosque was built in 715 but it has been destroyed numerous times by ear thquakes. 4. The Garden Tomb While officially the Gar den Tomb Association only maintains this as a possible site for Christ's burial, some tour guides of the site are convinced of the authenticity. They note the large cistern near by, which proves the area must have been a garden in Jesus' day. They maintain that there are marks of Christian veneration at the tomb which also prove its sanctity throughout the ages. • 10. www.ecbookings.com 2. Megiddo Megiddo is located near the site of the several Battles of Megiddo and Tel Megiddo, a rich archeological site. In the Israelite time it was a tow n, par t of the tribe of Manasseh (1 Chronicles 7:29). Page | 10 In 2005, Israeli archeologists discovered the remains of an ancient church, perhaps the eldest in the Holy Land under the grounds of the militar y prison. Authorities are speculating about moving the prison so the site can be accessible to tourists. In apocalyptic literature, Mount Megiddo, the hill overlooking the valley where the current kibbutz is located, is identified as the site of the final battle between the forces of good and evil at the end of time, known as Armageddon (mentioned in the New Testament in Revelation 16:16). 3. Armageddon: Mount of Megiddo Megiddo--the ruins of which are Tel Megiddo--is an ancient, fortified city near the mouth of the Jezreel Valley in moder n-day Israel. some historians believe that this city in the Near East was the site of more battles than any other place in history. The citizens of Megiddo, at different times in the city’s history, faced off against the various armies of Assyria, Canaan, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Persia, Philistine, and Rome. Even a decisive battle between English and Ottoman forces occurred near there in World War I. The city, which was inhabitied continuously from 7000-500 BCE, was no doubt defended and conquered so many times due to its position along antiquity’s major superhighway, the Via Maris. From Megiddo its rulers were able to exert control of an entire region, having only to defend the extremely narrow Aruna pass. With its seemingly endless cycle of conquest and revolt, it is no wonder the Hebrew mythmakers set the final battle known as "Armageddon" (literally the mount of Megiddo) here. Visit Mt. of Beatitudes w here Jesus delivered his first sermon, Tabgha, the site of multiplication of loaves and fishes and the primacy of St. Peter and Caper naum where the childhood of Jesus was spent, later retur n to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay in Tiberias. Highlights: 1. The Sea of Galilee Tiberias sits along the 32-mile shoreline of the Sea of Galilee. The Sea lies roughly 650 feet below sea level and is 14 miles long and 7 1/2 miles wide at its widest point. T he Sea is the major source of fresh water for the entire country. T he Sea, really a lake, lies on the ancient "Via Maris," a route that linked Egypt and Mesopotamia. The New Testament contains several references to the lake, which is know n alternatively as the Sea of Galilee, Sea of Tiberias and the Sea of Gennesaret. This is where Jesus calmed the stormy sea (Mathew 8) and walked on the water (Mathew 14). The Sea of Galilee is shaped like a harp, kinnor in Hebrew, but this is not where the name of the lake comes from. Israelis call the Sea by the biblical name Kinneret. This was the name of a city on the northwestern edge of the lake during the Canaanite and Israelite periods. The reference to the Sea of Tiberias is attributable to the newer riparian city. 2. Mount of beatitudes: The Sea of Galilee near Tabgha, the Mount of Beatitudes is the traditional site of Jesus' deliver y of the Sermon on the Mount, probably the most famous sermon of all time. Pilgrims have been drawn to this scenic place since at least the 4th centur y. The Catholic Church on the Mount of Beatitudes is Byzantine in style. Its octagonal shape represents the eight beatitudes. It has a marble veneer casing the lower walls and gold mosaic in the dome. The chief attraction here, though, is the setting. The cool and quiet gardens overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the landscape where Jesus conducted his ministr y make an excellent place to contemplate some of the best-known Christian teachings. Tabor, the site of transfiguration and drive to Yardenit, the Baptismal site along the Jordan River valley. Retur n to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Highlights: 1. Basilica of the Annunciat ion, Nazareth The Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth is a modern Catholic church built over the remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches. It incorporates the cave in which the Virgin Mary received the news from Gabriel that she w ould give birth to Jesus. The site has been a pilgrimage destination since earliest times and remains an important stop for Holy Land pilgrims today. The modern Church of the Annunciation is topped with a uniquely-shaped concrete dome 55 meters high. Its shape is based on the Madonna lily, a symbol of the Virgin Mar y. Inside, the basilica consists of an upper church and a lower church. The vast upper church is decorated with mosaics of the Vir gin donated by communities from around the world. The lower church centers on the Grotto or Cave of the Annunciation, where the angelic announcement to Mary is believed to have occurred. Also visible down here are remains of the Byzantine and Crusader churches that preceded the present one. • 13. www.ecbookings.com 2. Mary’s well: Mary's Well is located in the center of the downtown Nazareth, on the main road. The site is actually a modern water trough, w hich was built over the ancient trough, which was used by the women and animals as drinking water. The well gets its water by pipes from a natural spring about 200 M north of the well, and was used throughout the ages. According to the tradition, this was the place where Virgin Mar y, Mother of Jesus, was announced by the angel Gabriel that she will have a son of God. Page | 13 3. Bapt ismal Site: The Baptism Site (Arabic: el-Maghtas) on the Jordan side of the Jordan River is one of the most important recent discoveries in biblical archaeology. Excavations only began here in 1996, following Jordan's peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but have already uncovered more than 20 churches, caves and baptismal pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods. Although the identification is not absolutely certain, archaeology has show n that the area know n as Wadi Kharrar has long been believed to be the biblicalBethany-beyond-the- Jordan, where John the Baptist lived and Jesus was baptized. This area is also associated with the ascension of the Prophet Elijah into heaven, which is commemorated at a hill called Tell Mar Elias. Note: This Bethany should not be confused wit h Bethany in Jerusalem, where Mary Magdalene lived and Lazar us was raised from the dead. 4. Deborah's Battle The Israelite tribes gathered on Mount Tabor in the days of Deborah. The Canaanites were assembled at Harosheth Haggoyim (likely on the opposite side of the Jezreel Valley) and Barak led the Israelite charge of 10,000 men against Sisera's army. It seems that the Lord's intervention on behalf of the Israelites was in the form of a rainstorm, such that the Kishon River flooded and made chariot travel for the Canaanites impossible (Judges 4-5). 5. The Transfiguration Mt. Tabor is probably not the location for the Transfiguration: 1) Jesus and his disciples are in the region of Caesarea Philippi just prior to the Transfiguration. 2) The general location of the mountain is not isolated. Much traffic passed by through the Jezreel Valley below. 3) A militar y fort was located on top of the mountain and was clearly in use during the Hasmonean period and the time of the Jewish Revolt, and likely would have been in Jesus' day as well. Nebo Madaba Church Amman, Jordan Page | 14 Check out from the hotel and transfer to Allenby border terminal and cross over to the Jordan side. Drive to the top of Mt. Nebo, where Moses is presumably buried. Visit the ancient Church atop the Mount having the old mosaics. This is the place upto which Moses came and died. From there, Joshua marched into the Promised Land and conquered Jericho which is across the Dead Sea and can be seen from the mountain. Later, visit Madaba Church having mosaics of ancient Jerusalem. Transfer to hotel in Amman for dinner and overnight stay in Amman. Highlights: 1. Mount Nebo: Mount Nebo is a 1,000m (3,300ft) high mountain located 10km/6 mi NW of Madaba in Jordan, opposite the northern end of the Dead Sea. According to ancient tradition, this is the mountain from which Moses saw the Promised Land before he died. Because of its connection to Moses, Mt. Nebo has long been an important place of Christian pilgrimage. Excavations led by the Franciscans, who own the site, have uncovered significant remains of the early church and its magnificent Byzantine mosaics. A simple modern shelter dedicated to Moses has been built over them. Mount Nebo offers spectacular viewsof the Promised Land as seen by Moses. On the platform at the summit is a modern sculpture by an Italian artist representing Moses' staff and Jesus' words. The Old Baptistery mosaic is in remarkably pristine condition because another one was laid over it just a few decades later in 597. The underlying mosaic remained hidden for nearly 1,400 years until it was discovered in 1976 when the one on to p was removed for restoration (it now hangs on a wall). 2. Madaba Church: Madaba is a medium-sized city in Jordan, located 25km southwest of Amman. Madaba has become known as the "City of the Mosaics" for the many Byzantine mosaics that have been uncovered throughout the city. The most famous of these is the Madaba Map, a 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. he Madaba Mosaic Map is a map of Holy Land dating from the 6th century AD, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George. With two million pieces of colored stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns in Palestine and the Nile Delta. The mosaic contains the earliest extant representation of Jerusalem, labeled the "Holy City" (Η ΑΓΙΑ ΠΟΛ ΙC). The map has been a major key in developing scholarly knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem after its destruction and rebuilding in 70 AD. Hundred of other mosaics from the 5th through the 7th centuries are scattered throughout Madaba. Other mosaic masterpieces - such as in the Church of the Virgin, the Church of the Apostles and the Archaeological Park - depict flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing and farming.
