4. Steeped in local history and
tradition Erganagh House was
built circa 1780.
Also a former rectory, the estate
served as a base for American
troops and generals during WW2.
Artefacts still exist around the
house such as the army shower
block, trenches and more...
The main house was used as an
HQ for the 34th Infantry Division
of the U.A. Army in 1942.
From January 1942 until
December that same year it was
used by a Military Police Platoon
and the 34th Signal Company.
FORMER RECTORY
Famous Irish painter John Wright
lived in the house as a boy. The
current owners have some of his
work displayed throughout the
house.
In the master bedroom is where he
once signed the wall as a child,
the signature finally unveiled
during the restoration of the
home.
ARTISTIC PAST
The area in which Erganagh House
sits is renowned for fishing, the
waterways stretch from the Foyle
in Derry to the Strule in Omagh,
the American Folk Park and Gortin
Glen Forest Park.

SALVAGE
OPERATION
Anything in the house
that was capable of being
restored was salvaged
EXPERT
WORKMANSHIP
Salvaged features of the
house were restored by
trade specialists
A LABOUR
OF LOVE
The restoration was
completed over a number
of years
12.
13. The restoration took a number of years to complete.
Prior to the restoration, the house had fallen into
substantial disrepair and the Gate Lodge and
Gardeners Cottage did not exist therefore a
significant project of reinstating Erganagh Estate
lay ahead.
Erganagh Estate is now presented as it was when it
was originally built in circa 1780 and represents an
extraordinary example of the architecture from the
18th Century.
Anything in the house that was capable of being
restored was salvaged and passed to specialists.
What was beyond restoration was replaced with the
closest modern day materials.
For example, the damaged and missing sections of
cornicing in the house had moulds taken. These
moulds were then used to recreate the missing or
damaged pieces of cornicing.
All off the cornicing was replaced and restored by
hand piece by piece. This is a long and specialised
process because each piece has to be put in its exact
location by hand.
THE RESTORATION
14. The following is a summary, but by no means an
exhaustive list, of the work carried out on Erganagh
Estate as it began its journey to where it is today.
The Slide & Sash windows restored to full working
order including restoration of ropes and weights
The doors were stripped down to natural wood &
door mechanisms restored

paint and walnut banister restored

traditional Georgian design using sandstone and
stone
The concrete floor was removed from the hall and

The painted stairs and black ink stain on the
floors, as was the fashion at one time, was sanded
and treated to reveal the original floor board
The entire roof was completely replaced and has
approx 7500 Bangor Blue slates
The chimneys were relined and all fireplaces
within the house are capable of being used
Chimneys restored and new chimney pots installed
All cornicing was hand made and replaced
throughout the house
The marble fireplaces throughout the house were
stripped of paint and restored
The pebble dash, which covered all of the stone on
the exterior of the house, was removed revealing
the original stonework
All of the external stone walls around the house
were rebuilt
The basement courtyard was excavated and
flagged and stone walls rebuilt
