The Second Commandment
Bible Study presentation by Tim Martens
2 “I am the LORD your God, who
brought you out of the land of
Egypt, out of the house
of [a]bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods
before Me.
The First Commandment
Exodus 20
The Second Commandment – What is God Like?
"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any
likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in
the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
you shall not bow down to them nor serve them."
Exodus 20:4…
The Second Commandment goes to the heart of our relationship with our
Creator. What is the proper way to worship the only true God?
Isis – Mother Goddess of Egypt
Baphomet and Molech
Zeus and Jupiter
Acts 17:23
for as I was passing through and
considering the objects of your worship,
I even found an altar with this
inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
Therefore, the One whom you worship
without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:
Moses & the Burning Bush

adoring children
The Second Commandment
(according to the Jewish tradition),
“You shall have no other gods before
me,” does not simply refer to stone idols
of Moses’ day. “Other gods” are anything
that we “worship” more than God—
money, power, love, education, a nation,
or art.*
Colossians 3:5
Therefore put to death your members
which are on the earth: fornication,
uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and
covetousness, which is idolatry.
God requires accountability
“For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous
God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on
the children to the third and fourth
generations of those who hate Me, but
showing mercy to thousands, to those who
love Me and keep My commandments”
(Exodus 20:5-6).

Editor's Notes

  • #2 The first commandment has to do with WHOM we worship, while the second commandment has to do with HOW we worship the true and only God.
  • #3 Identification – who is speaking Then the first commandment
  • #4 Jews and Christians number the commandments differently. The reason is that “Ten Commandments” in the original Hebrew literally reads “Ten Statements.” Therefore, Jews count the first statement, which is “I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” as the first commandment. Without God, the Ten Commandments, and morality in general, is just a list of arbitrary rules. Unless there is a Higher Authority (God) behind the Ten Commandments, all right and wrong are just personal opinion and belief, subject to change.
  • #7 Anubis – caretaker of the dead
  • #8 Baphomet – horned goat-man Molech or Moloch– child sacrifice of the firstborn. Fire in belly. Moveable arms. A windlass in the back connected to chairs that raise the arms. The firstborn child is placed on the arms of the statue Molech and then the arms are raised up with the chains and the little child slides into the fiery belly of the statue. This is akin to abortion today – where what would be the firstborn child is sacrificed or killed through abortion.
  • #9 Mithras – Mithraism Using the blood of bulls to baptize members of the secret cult
  • #10 Greeks had a whole list of pagan gods – each for its own purpose. Romans adopted many of the Greek gods and renamed them. And then built the “Pantheon” – a place where all gods could be worshipped.
  • #11 The Romans had so many gods, they even made a shrine to the unknown god – just in case they missed one. The apostle Paul took advantage of that mindset to introduce the true God.
  • #12 Dragons of mythical folklore around the world – from Europe to Asia – the dragons are remarkably similar.
  • #13 Neptune – under-the-sea-god. This statue is on the Thames River in England.
  • #14 What does God look like? Deuteronomy 4: 15-19… 15 “Take careful heed to yourselves, for you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16 lest you act corruptly and make for yourselves a carved image in the [e]form of any figure: the likeness of male or female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth or the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground or the likeness of any fish that is in the water beneath the earth. 19 And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them,

  • #18 Covetousness n. Strong desire; eagerness. n. The character of being covetous, in an evil sense; a strong or inordinate desire of obtaining and possessing something, without regard to law or justice; overbearing avarice. from The Century Dictionary.
  • #19 This brings us to the latter part of the Second Commandment: God holds us accountable for our words and deeds. Bowing before an idol to pay homage to one’s own image of God may appear to be an act of great devotion if one is ignorant of God’s great purpose for human beings. But God expects those who worship Him in truth and understanding to demonstrate their love for Him by keeping His commandments from the heart, not by going through useless rites in front of some object. Jesus made this clear when He said, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). We are not to worship God with images and meaningless rituals. Jesus explained that “the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23).
