UC Santa Cruz
Division of Graduate Studies
Beginning of 2015-16 Year Welcome from Dean Miller
September 27, 2015
Dean of Graduate Studies and Vice Provost Tyrus
Miller
For our new, incoming UC Santa Cruz graduate students:
our warm welcome! We are also delighted to welcome
back our continuing students: we hope you had an
enjoyable and productive summer!
We will soon be in the full academic-year swing of
instruction and research. Some of you will be occupied
with new coursework; others with preparing exams; and
still others with conducting field, laboratory, archival, or
studio work and writing chapters towards theses and
dissertations.
Each of these is a crucial part of the cycle of graduate
study, and I hope that you can reap to the maximum the
benefits of studying with UC Santa Cruz’s distinguished
faculty and in the inviting, supportive community of fellow
students, for your success at each stage.
Regardless of your discipline or where you are in your
graduate career, we want your beginning- of-year and –
term tasks—such as registering, receiving your support
and financial aid, settling your student account, and filing any necessary documents—go without a hitch. If
you have questions or problems with any of these, please first turn to your staff advisor in your program; they
will be able to help with many issues and can refer you to the proper person in the Division of Graduate
Studies if you need further assistance.
One of the newest and most exciting developments in the Division of Graduate Studies (DGS) is our newly-
assumed role in encouraging and supporting entrepreneurship at UCSC. The DGS is now housing and
coordinating the (CIED), directed by Associate Dean
of Graduate Studies and Professor of Physics Sue Carter.
Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Development
CIED educates graduate students about entrepreneurship, building connections with the growing
entrepreneurial community of the Santa Cruz region and beyond. CIED hosts regular events and workshops
on different aspects of entrepreneurship; a graduate entrepreneurial skills course and designated emphasis is
under development. Though seated on campus in the Graduate Division, the CIED reaches beyond the
graduate community, connecting as well with undergraduates, faculty members, and staff interested in
translating their expertise into direct technological, commercial, public, and social impacts.
The Division of Graduate Studies offers a variety of graduate-student related programming, in some cases
directly coordinated by the DGS, and in others through co-sponsorship of activities with partners, such as the
, the Chancellor’s Office, the the research centers and diversity
organizations within academic divisions, campus resource centers, and organizations such as

activities, and graduate community programming.
The DGS coordinates four programs (along with the CIED’s distinct activities):directly
The (Winter quarter), a workshop course leading to an
official certificate;
Graduate Student Leadership Certificate Program
The (April or May) featuring graduate research presentations across all our
campus programs and disciplines;

The Chancellor’s Graduate Internship Program, which sponsors graduate student research focused on
improvements of the campus environment, diversity, community, or student success; and,
