PROGRESS FOR YOUNG PARENTS BREACH THEIR CONTRACT WITH URBAN
COSMETOLOGY INC.
Progress for Young Parents contracted with Urban Cosmetology Inc. to provide our
clients with hands-on experience in the hair industry. Urban Cosmetology Inc. is responsible for
training young women about the fundamentals of hair care and beauty, as well as providing our
clients with careers as beauticians in black hair salons. Recently, Progress for Young Parents was
notified that graduates of our program aren’t being placed in salons upon obtaining their licenses
and haven’t been in two years.
Because of this problem, Progress for Young Parents will no longer contract with Urban
Cosmetology, Inc. The organization feel it is imperative for our graduates to kick start their lives
and careers for the betterment of them and their child(ren)’s future. It is important for our
stakeholders and funders to know that their monetary donations are being handled properly and
that client needs are being fulfilled.
Artis, like many of the organization’s clients, was a teen mother. She struggled to afford
her children a lifestyle that was better than what statistics mapped out. She considers this
program to be “near and dear” to her heart. She says, “I know how hopeless many of our clients
feel knowing they have a huge responsibility and few credentials to take on that responsibility,
because I was once that teen. I understand the hopelessness they possess, which is why it’s
important for our partners to make due on their promise of providing these young women with
the tools need to soar.” “When a community partner has nothing to show, the partnership must
go,” said Patricia E. Artis, director and founder of Progress for Young Parents.
It’s an isolated case for us to contract with organizations that aren’t demonstrating
integrity. Especially, because we are so committed to being upfront with our patronage. The
organization wants those associated with our program to know that it has taken immediate
action. It will be working closely with all other community partners to ensure that this never
happens again. The appropriate measures will be taken for our clients who were affiliated with
this corporation or affected by them.

About Progress for Young Parents:
Progress for Young Parents is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the future prospects
for teenage girls or who are pregnant and/or are already raising children as single mothers. The
organization addresses if growing problem in Philadelphia where teen pregnancy rates are much
higher than average. Too often, the burden of pregnancy and raising children as a single mother
increases the chance a woman will drop out of school, lack access to decent-paying jobs, and end
up living in poverty.
