2. What is
prenatal
develop
ment
The prenatal period is the period
between conception and birth.
It normally lasts about 266 days,
or 280 days from the last
menstrual period.
3 stages occur during this period.
4. The
germinal
period
The characteristics of the germinal period is the growth of the
zygote after fertilization and establishment of a linkage
between the zygote and the mother’s support system.
the zygote begins a 3- to 4-day journey down the fallopian
tube toward the uterus.
The blastocyst enters the uterine cavity, it floats freely for 2 or
3 days. When it is about 6 to 7 days old and composed of
some 100 cells, it attaches to the Uterine wall.
most pregnant women cease to menstruate in this stage in
development, the organism is about the size of a pinhead.
The blastocyst now begins to grow rapidly, initiating the
formation of the membranes that will later surround, protect,
and nourish it.
5. The embryonic period
The embryonic stage of human fetal development refers to
weeks 2 to week 8 of development after an egg is fertilized.
During this time, precursors to almost all of the body organs
and structures are formed except sex organs.
As a result, this is a very fragile stage of development and
there is potential for malformation.
From the beginning the umbilical cord links the embryo to the
placenta being a conduit carrying two arteries and one vein.
6. The fetal period
This is the final stage in
prenatal life, the fetal period
begins at the end of the
eighth week and ends with
birth.
By the end of the eighth
week, the fetus resembles a
human being. It is complete
with face, arms, legs,
fingers, toes, and internal
organs.
During the third month, the
fetus develops skeletal and
neurological structures that
lay the foundation for
movements of the arms,
legs, and fingers
At six months the eyebrows
and lashes are well defined
and the body is lean but
strikingly human in
appearance.
At nine months the limbs
become rounded, and the
fingernails and toenails are
well formed the fetus is now
ready for birth.
