Gas pump mistakes not to make
1. 5 mistakes you may be making at the gas pump
Pumping gas should be easy enough to do without even thinking about it… right?
For most people, pumping gas is second nature. They can do it without putting
too much thought into it. However, did you know that there are common but
dangerous mistakes you may be making at the gas pump without even realizing
it? Toyota of Orlando is here to help – we’re breaking down these errors so you
can safely and efficiently hit the gas pump every time.
Are you making these errors at the gas pump?
Mistake #1: Leaving the car running.
You should never leave the car running while at the gas pump. Why? Because
when you do, your car is putting off heat and static electricity. Both of these
things can quickly cause gas or even gas fumes to ignite, putting you and
everyone around you in grave danger. Take it from our Orlando Toyota
dealership – turn your car off before you start filling up at the gas pump.
Mistake #2: Leaving the car unlocked and/or windows down.
Never leave your windows down or doors unlocked while at the gas pump. It
makes it very easy and tempting for thieves to sneak into the other side of your
2. vehicle while you’re filling the fuel tank. This puts you at risk for your belongings
being stolen or even worse, a carjacking. Lock up and make sure you put your
keys in your pocket.
Mistake #3: Getting in and out of the car while at the gas pump.
As you get in and out of your car, you build up a static charge on your body
(especially when it’s cold out). Remember what we said about static charge? It
can ignite gasoline and cause a big fire. We know it’s miserable to be outside at
the gas pump when it’s cold or rainy, but resist the urge to get back inside of your
Orlando Toyota until you’re done pumping.
Don’t overfill your Orlando Toyota’s tank
Mistake #4: “Topping off” the tank.
You know that “click” you hear when you’re done pumping gas? That’s the
automatic shutoff valve, indicating that the tank is full and you don’t need to pump
anymore. DON’T PUMP ANYMORE. It IS possible to overfill your Orlando
Toyota’s gas tank. Gas expands inside the fuel tank, and if you’ve overfilled it,
the gas has nowhere to go. You’ll likely end up with a gas leak, which can be
extremely dangerous.
Mistake #5: Smoking.
3. Sigh. Some people STILL smoke at the gas pump. All it takes is one tiny ember
or even a hot ash to cause a big fire and in turn, an explosion. Put your cigarette
or cigar out well before you get to the gas pump and make sure you leave it out
until you’re well clear.
