2 THE PERSPECTIVE
3. ‘THE Fencer’, which was written and developed
by Anna Heinamaa, 54, whilst studying for
a Master’s degree in Film Screenwriting at Salford, was
shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The 2015 internationally co-produced drama film, which was
directed by Finland’s Klaus Haro, is based on the true story
of Endel Nelis. Endel was an Estonian fencing master who
fled from his home in Leningrad in the early 1950s to escape
Russia’s secret police. After moving to the small Estonian town
of Haapsalu, Endel founds an after-school for aspiring young
swordsmen.
However, when Endel’s pupils wish to participate in a
national fencing tournament in Leningrad, the fencing tutor
is faced with a huge dilemma. Does Endel risk everything to
take the children to Leningrad or does he put his safety first
and risk disappointing his pupils?
Anna’s inspiration for the film came from when she first met
Endel’s daughter Helen Nelis-Naukas, who now runs her
father’s fencing school. After hearing about the ‘classic hero’
journey Endel had made, Anna drew on this story when she
had to write a film script for a degree module. Since then
the film, which was produced in late February 2014, has
received national recognition, having been selected as the
Finnish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th
Academy Awards and Finland’s submission for a Best Foreign
Language Oscar.
Anna said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated for a Golden
Globe. I’m hoping that it will make people more aware of the
fact that a great screenplay – a well-written heartfelt story – is
the foundation that a successful film builds on.
“The programme at Salford took my writing to a whole new
level by giving me the tools to understanding what the art of
storytelling is all about, so I was thrilled by that experience.”
One of Anna’s former lecturers, Colin Muir, Programme
leader for MA Television and Radio Scriptwriting at the
University of Salford, added: “Anna studied on the MA for
two years and was an analytical, imaginative and dedicated
writer.
“The Fencer is one of two film scripts she developed and
wrote on the programme. There may well be further success
in store for Anna in the future.”
The award eventually went to Hungarian film ‘Son of Saul’,
which would also go on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign
Film.

4 THE PERSPECTIVE 5
4. AN innovative Master’s programme in
podiatry at the University of Salford
is the first to be introduced in the UK. It allows
students to attain Health and Care Professions
Council (HCPC) registration at the same time
as completing an MSc in Podiatry.
Approved by the HCPC and the College of
Podiatry, this unique programme increases
students’ employability and positions them
better for career development and promotion.
The MSc students are aligned with the School’s
Foot Ankle and Knee research group, led by
Professor Chris Nester.
Chris said: “I am delighted with this new
pathway that links undergraduate and
postgraduate studies to our research – and
the MSc cohort is an excellent platform from
which to build wider links between research
outcomes and curriculum.
I am gaining professional and
theoretical knowledge on a daily basis and
by reading research and applying this in the
clinical context I am able to challenge and
ask pertinent questions.

6 THE PERSPECTIVE 7
5. Courses and subjects
What subjects and types of study are eligible?
All subjects and modes of study that result in a Masters
degree are eligible.
What length of course is covered?
Loans are available for full-time Masters lasting up to two
years and part-time Masters lasting up to four years. Longer
courses will still receive a maximum loan of £10,000, but this
will be spread across your course.
What about PhD’s, postgraduate certificates and
diplomas?
These aren’t covered under the Postgraduate Loan scheme.
What about the PGCE?
Whilst the PGCE is not covered under this scheme it still
attracts full SFE Undergraduate funding
Amounts and costs
How much can I borrow?
£10,000 is the maximum amount available for the Masters
loans. You can borrow less, but you can’t borrow any more.
Is it means tested?
No, you can borrow up to £10,000 regardless of your
personal circumstances or the specific cost of your Masters.
How is the money paid?
It’s paid directly to you in three instalments per year. The
exact value of each instalment depends on the length of your
course.
When will I have to pay the money back?
After you graduate, you’ll have to repay the loan once you
start earning over £21,000- a year. Repayments begin in
2019 – including for those starting a Masters in 2016.
What will the repayments be?
The rate of repayment is 6% of your earnings OVER £21,000.
So the 6% is only payable on the portion of your earnings
over the £21,000 threshold – not your total salary. Interest
rates are expected to be RPI+3%.
I’ve already got an undergraduate loan, how does that
impact my repayments?
Repayments of undergraduate and postgraduate loans will be
separate but will be taken at the same time. That means that
StartingapostgraduateMaster’scoursein2016?Youmay
beabletoapplyforaPostgraduateLoanofupto£10,000to
helptowardscourseandlivingcostswhileyou’restudying.
once you’re earning over £21,000 you’ll make two payments
from your salary each month; 9% for your undergraduate
loan and 6% for your postgraduate loan.
Who qualifies?
Are there any age restrictions?
There is no minimum age limit although applicants must be
age 60 or under on the first day of the first academic year of
the course.
What are the nationality and residential requirements?
Loan applicants need to be UK nationals, resident in England
or EU nationals, resident in the EU
If a student defers entry after the application has been
approved can they carry the applications forward to
the next academic year?
No. The student would need to submit a new application for
the next academic year.
Is funding available for students repeating a year
of study?
No. Postgraduate loan funding is not available for repeating
a year of study unless the student did not complete the year
due to a compelling personal reason. Guidance on what
constitutes a compelling reason can be found here:
www.heinfo.slc.co.uk
Can existing students apply?
No. Only students who start a postgraduate course after
August 2016 are eligible.
If a student is in receipt of an NHS bursary, does this
affect their post graduate loan eligigbility?
No. Receipt of other sources of postgraduate funding will not
affect eligibility for 2016/17 post graduate loans.
