The Young Tiger Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides suicide prevention resources, awareness training, and support groups for young black males ages 13 to 30. It hosts conferences and disseminates information online and in pamphlets about suicide awareness and prevention. The foundation collaborates with other organizations and was created to address the growing problem of suicide among young black men, which is often not openly discussed in their communities due to stigma.
1. The Young Tiger Foundation (YTF) is a 501(C)3 organization that provides prevention
support, awareness training, and resources to assist individuals and their families in
recognizing and addressing suicidal tendencies. Our target audience is young black
males between 13 and 30 years of age. YTF also provides support for survivors of
suicide.
YTF hosts conferences and training events, and disseminates pamphlets and web
content on suicide awareness and training. We also facilitate information exchange and
peer-to-peer mentoring using an electronic forum and other media. Visit our webpage at
www.youngtigerfoundation.org.
YTF collaborates with other organizations that are aligned to the goal of ending this
silent epidemic in the black community.
YTF was initiated because mental health issues leading to suicide are not openly
addressed in the black community, where it is often thought that a mental health issue is
a sign of weakness.
We have been ignoring a growing problem. As a result the incidence of suicide
attempts and completions by our young men has doubled over the last ten years.
Awareness of this disease should increase at a proportionate rate, at a minimum.
Our young men of are particularly at risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death among black males between
the ages of 15 and 24. This is a testament to the strain our young men are under and
the need to have this awareness broadened in high schools and college campuses
where academic and life challenges can cause a great deal of stress - before young
men enter a work world that often does not support them.
