The preliminary exercise taught the filmmakers about different shots and continuity rules. In their final product, they applied techniques like match on action, shot-reverse shot within the 180 degree rule. Their 2 minute start shows the opening of the full film, applying techniques like flashbacks, match cuts, and shot-reverse shots to tell a linear story. They've gotten better at continuity and matching shots to create realistic scenes. A handheld tilt-down pan was used instead of a generic pan to add an unsettling feel.

Question 7
1. Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
2. Preliminary
exercise
The preliminary exercise introduced us to the many ways
of filming and creating a media product it introduced us
into the different types of shots and many conventions
and continuity rules to ensure a film is professional and
well made.
In the video you see many aspects of continuity that has
been used. This includes the use of opening a door and
providing a match on action and the use of the 180° rule
to provide what seems like a natural conversation and
natural exchange of dialogue through basic film
technique. This is incorporated with the shot-reverse-shot
that allows us to perform a conversation whilst also
seeing reactions of each of the people in the conversation
continuing that natural looking conversation.
The match on action also creates a smooth transition
between shots by matching actions as I moved through
the door.
3. Final product
In our final product you see many of the aspects
of our preliminary task being that there are uses
of match on action during the killing scene and
even a shot reverse shot toward the end without
breaking the 180° rule.
This clip lasts 1 minuet 37 seconds that shows
what the opening of our full product would look
likeThis shows many of the learned filming and
editing techniques that have been followed
through to the full product.
4. How have you used the things you have learnt in your preliminary task in your 2
minute start to a film?
Many basic techniques such as the 180° line and shot reverse shots have been
carried forward to this product which has lead us to create a more linear story telling
through flashbacks whilst also providing continuity through match on actions and
keeping relative pace. The use of shot-reverse shot has also allowed us to create a
more realistic conversations and see the reactions and emotions on each characters
face. We also learnt and used the technique of a whip pan and over-shoulder shots
which creates a stalker-esque atmosphere and sense of tension in the film.
What have you got better at?
I feel we have got better at creating continuity as you can tell through the way we
match up the shot of the knife to create a simple yet realistic knife ‘stab’ and create
an atmosphere of realism and horror
Have you used any different methods?
There were not many different methods of doing our film from common conventions
however instead of using a generic pan we decided one way to do it would be a tilt
down and pan via a hand held shot to create an unease in the viewers mind.
