SSH & eInfra projects

EOSC-hub week, Prague April 20-12,2019

Background SSH Collaborations
EC has subsidized many domain specific research infrastructure projects: CLARIN, DARIAH,
CESSDA, SHARE, ESS. Many of them have become ERICs
Often these projects develop collaborations from themselves e.g. the partners participate in
multiple infrastructures
National projects bundling efforts of several disciplines e.g. national CLARIAH projects
Topic oriented EU projects e.g. “Data Without Boundaries”
Thematic cluster projects: “Doing similar things in similar ways”
eInfras projects worked with SSH before: EGI competence centres, EUDAT core
communities. …
Cluster projects do seem ideal points of contacts for eInfra initiatives, bundling common
requirements and access to solutions

SSH are highly diverse
Diverse also in its use of IT and e-Infrastructure for research
Largely historically determined; e.g. social sciences and (computational)
linguistics had a considerable head start
Degree of discipline organization differs which influences uptake of new
practices
Attitudes differs:
Some SSH communities cherish their uniqueness emphasizing highly specific
requirements,
… others are more open for maximizing the potential of large e-infrastructure

• progress mostly because of adoption of now proven technologies e.g. HS PIDs, SAML FIM
• with EOSC (hub) we have an opportunity to drastically increase sustainability of common solutions

SSH eInfra collaboration in EOSC
Many problems of SSH research infrastructures still to be solved by eInfra
offers or by community collaborations
The topics in this session give an impression of challenges and concerns for
the SSH working with EOSC
“My cloud, your cloud, our cloud? Governance in EOSC” Franciska de Jong, CLARIN
ERIC
“Managing international comparative data, US/Au collaborations”, Bodil Agasøster NSD /
ESS
“What services can the communities contribute to EOSC(-hub)”, Dieter van Uytvanck,
CLARIN ERIC
“Managing training materials beyond individual projects”, Vasso Kalaitzi LIBER
“Competitive or Collaborative services?” Matej Durco, OEAW / DARIAH
