Vision Summit at the Franciscan Renewal Center - Aug. 3-4, 2013
1.
2. Holy God,
For centuries your people have raised up out of the materials of the earth,
houses in which they could gather to give you praise,
seek your help, and celebrate their unity in you.
They carved churches out of the rock of caves
and fashioned the gold-encrusted walls and dome of the Hagia Sophia.
They raised the soaring medieval cathedrals of Europe
and built the first simple churches of wood and adobe in this country.
Some of the churches of our predecessors in faith have stood for centuries,
others fell back to the earth within decades.
As we gather to plan the new house for our church — our community —
give us some of the inspiration that you gave our ancestors.
Give us some of the wisdom of Solomon who raised your first temple.
Send your Spirit to help us to discern
among the many ideas and possibilities that we will consider.
Help us to listen carefully and respectfully to the many voices of those
who have a stake in the decisions we make.
Bless our work today and in upcoming months.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord,
who is the summit of creation and the purpose of all of our effort. Amen.

48. Holy Family
This sculpture of the Holy
Family is rich with
symbolism. The Christ-child
prefigures the cross:
His future calling.
We perceive the Son’s trust
in His loving father, and so
we begin to understand the
relationship He has with His
Heavenly Father. Mary, like
the Church, adores her Son.
Karen Schmidt example: “The Holy Family”
49. Mary and Elizabeth
was commissioned for
the chapel of the
Elizabeth House, a home
for pregnant women in
crisis. This sculpture
shows Mary in her
humanity: a young,
vulnerable girl, in awe of
the One who dwells
within her. It pictures
her obedience, faith,
and courage. Elizabeth
serves as an example to
us, calling us to come
alongside the
vulnerable.
Karen Schmidt example: “Mary and Elizabeth”
58. Francis preached to people the Gospel of peace and salvation… to prepare in
the desert a way by word and example. – St. Bonaventure

Vision Summits Community town halls
Welcome! I am Tom Simmons, and I’m honored to serve as the current co-chairman of the Board of Directors here at the Franciscan Renewal Center. It has been a true honor to be part of the Board over the past 7 years, and soon, I’ll turn over the reins to Doug Oleson, who is excited and I know will serve us all well. Thank you for attending our EIGHTH Vision Summit and THIRD Church Design presentation, and thank you to the staff and volunteers at the Casa who have put this meeting together. The purpose of today is to keep you up-to-date about the Casa’s renovation plans and how you can help us fulfill a shared VISION.Before we begin, let’s start in prayer.
Extensive groundwork has been done to create a VISION that articulates the culture of the Franciscan Renewal Center (our “Casa”) and responds to the needs of this community – today and as we evolve over the decades to come.
That vision for the Casa is: We are committed to Renewing Lives for ourselves, our communities and our world. We do this through Spiritual Growth, Healing and Transformation, and Serving Others in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. All are welcome here. And that’s makes us a popular place! Thousands of people come every year. In short, we’ve seen:the church community expand to more than 1,900 households 250 children are enrolled in religious education & family catechesis – a 90% jump in just one yearWe’ve added 3 new Faith in Action ministries in the past two yearsMore than 127,000 visits were made to the campus last year alone. It’s a phenomenal story to tell, especially when faith or trust in religious institutions is declining elsewhere. WE are growing. To fund and deliver on this VISION – and continue to welcome all without cutting services -- we have embarked upon the RENEWING LIVES campaign. This is setting the stage for our Casa to confidently move into the future, knowing that we have the physical plant and financial resources – as well as the manpower -- to accommodate an ever-changing and growing community.
The campaign is volunteer led, with 10 active committees consisting of about 8 people each, plus a larger Church Advisory Group. We are tremendously grateful to these volunteers who dedicate large amounts of time each month. If you would like to get involved, please see Tara La Bouff at the end of today’s meeting.
The work of this campaign and its many community volunteers has never been more needed. The entire property never had a Master Plan to guide the Casa’s growth. Buildings were repaired or constructed on a piecemeal basis and a shoestring budget. So, a Master Plan was developed last year and first shared with the community in August – exactly 12 months ago. The Master Plan provides a road map for where new structures could be placed on the property and how to best configure our 25 acres in order to preserve yet maximize this land.
Gloria Dei is an unprecedented ecclesial stained-glass design for the new Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This project consists of 24 separate architectural glass panels for the chancel façade: 750 sq. ft. in size and rising over 36 ft. in height. Each panel was created using a number of traditional and contemporary glass treatments, including silver stain, acid-etching, sandblasting, and enameling.
