Straining to understand conversation
Trouble following the conversation when two or more people talk
at the same time
Trouble hearing in a noisy background
People get annoyed because you misunderstand what they say
People often complain that you turn up the volume too high on
the television or radio
You often find yourself asking people to repeat themselves
Many people you talk to seem to mumble or speak unclearly
Misunderstanding what others are saying and responding
inappropriately
Trouble understanding the speech of women and children

• What causes hearing loss?
• How hearing loss occurs

16. About 22 million
workers are
exposed to
hazardous noise
each year
About 10 million
workers are
exposed to
solvents
An unknown
number are
exposed to other
ototoxicants
20. Level of risk is influenced by differences in exposure conditions:
• Noise level
• As noise level increases, the risk also increases
• Duration of exposure
• The longer the noise lasts, the more hazardous it becomes
• Impulsiveness
• Noises that have very abrupt starts and stops (such as hammering, gunfire, or fireworks)
are more dangerous than constant noise of the same overall level
• Intermittency
• Periods of relative quiet between exposures allow the ear to "rest" and reduce the risk
• Ototoxic chemicals

22. OSHA – Occupational noise
exposure 1910.95
• OSHA establishes
permissible exposure limit
(PEL)
• 90 dB(A) for all workers for
an 8 hour day
NIOSH – Recommended
Exposure Limits (REL) for
noise based on the best
available science and practice
• 85 dB(A) over an 8-hour
average (Time-Weighted
Average orTWA)

Editor's Notes
Imagine a world without sound. Without hearing the birds sing, Without hearing the voices of your loved ones.
End with We don’t know who will be more susceptible., but there are some risk factors that increase the odds.
Gender- men are twice as likely to develop hearing loss than women
Age- hearing loss gradually occurs in most of us as we grow older
Most older people who experience hearing loss have a combination of both age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss
Race/ethnicity-biological factors
Genetics- Inherited genetic defects and gene mutations
Explain what the chart means.
Hazardous noise is present in almost all occupations.
All are above the OSHA and NIOSH levels. Hearing protection is required?
The good news is it’s preventable.
Most important is that they are comfortable, so you will wear them. Just like taking off shoes that don’t fit properly, you’ll take them out, exposing yourself to hazardous noise.
