• Medical gloves are used by healthcare professionals to prevent the spread of infection or illness. Medical gloves are a type of
disposable gloves which are used to help prevent cross-contamination between caregivers and patients.
• There are two types of medical gloves: Examination Gloves and Surgical Gloves.
Examination Gloves: Examination gloves can be both sterile or non-sterile and can be used for different types of medical
examinations and various other purposes in healthcare facilities.
Surgical Gloves: Surgical gloves are a category of sterile gloves which are worn by healthcare professionals during a surgical
procedure to reduce the risk of infection and cross contamination to both the healthcare professionals and patients.
Surgical gloves became first available to surgeons in the 1840s, but surgeons were reluctant to wear them since they were
uncomfortable and inflexible. In 1878, Thomas Forster of the India-Rubber Works in Surrey, England, received a patent to
manufacture gloves specifically for surgical operations. Since then, surgeons across the globe have started using them and
acknowledged the benefits of using surgical gloves.
Surgical gloves are of superior quality compared to any other type of medical glove. These gloves are explicitly designed to provide
higher tensile strength, sensitivity, and accuracy, which a surgical team requires during any procedure.
Surgical gloves are used in any procedure wherein there is a chance of having contact with bloodborne pathogens or environmental
contaminants, or any other kind of infection. Since the risk associated with such procedures is too high hence, the gloves are
tested rigorously and must adhere to the specific guidelines set by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Surgical Gloves are generally made up of different materials, including latex, nitrile, and neoprene. For many years, natural rubber
latex has been a preferred choice for the surgical glove material because of various benefits associated with them, such as ease of
use and comfort it offers to the healthcare professionals during the procedure. These gloves have a polymer coating that offers a
flexible fit and a higher level of sensitivity. Surgeons even describe latex surgical gloves as fitting like a second skin. Also, latex
provides an effective barrier against pathogens and contaminants.

Product Overview
Nitrile surgical gloves are made up of synthetic rubber fabric that offers a latex free option. These gloves are stronger than latex or
vinyl gloves and provide greater resistance to needle sticks and abrasions. These are the best alternatives for those surgeons who
have latex allergies. These gloves offer higher barrier protection from exposure to chemicals and contaminants. Neoprene surgical
gloves are also made up of synthetic material and are latex free and provide high strength to the healthcare professionals during a
surgical procedure.
Earlier, two types of surgical gloves including powdered and non-powdered were available. Surgeons highly preferred the powdered
gloves since these contained cornstarch inside which made them easier to slip over hands. While they provided ease of use to the
surgeons during the procedure, the powdered surgical gloves could create complications if the powder meets exposed tissue during
a surgical procedure or incision. As a result of this, the US FDA banned the use of powdered surgical gloves on January 19, 2017.
Many manufacturers now employ specific processes to make sure powder-free gloves have the same easy on/off feel like those
with powder.
Certain healthcare professionals prefer wearing two gloves during a surgical procedure to provide better protection and reduce the
risk of infection and cross contamination. This is known as double gloving. Surgeons usually prefer black or blue colored gloves for
double gloving. There are certain factors that needs to be considered while choosing an appropriate surgical glove. These include
the material of the glove, its compatibility with existing products such as surgical lights, surgical blades, etc., procedure related
requirements, level of protection provided by the surgical glove, fit and comfort, overall quality of the product, cost of the product,
