➢ A water purifier is a device used for removing unwanted chemicals and biological contaminants from water obtained from
water bodies such as rivers, lakes, etc., to produce pure drinking water, which is fit for human consumption or for
industrial use.
➢ Water purifiers are categorized as ‘point of use’ and ‘point of entry’ water purifiers. Point of Use (POU) water purifiers can
be directly installed at the tap water supply point, which includes counter top, under sink, faucet and dispenser water
purifier, whereas, Point of Entry (POE) water purifiers are installed at main water supply that reaches houses/commercial
offices/industries, faucets or any other outlets.

Reverse Osmosis Membrane based Water Purifiers
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a membrane based separation process, in which RO membrane is responsible for the removal of
impurities (suspended solids, macro molecules, divalent salt, monovalent salt, etc.) from contaminated water. The process
allows water molecules to pass through a semi-permeable membrane separating impurities such as suspended solids,
macro molecules, divalent and monovalent salts present in contaminated water. The RO membrane is capable of removing
molecules with a pore ranging between 1000-0.0001 microns.
Ultrafiltration Membrane based Water Purifiers
Ultrafiltration membrane is a technology that removes impurities from contaminated water using pressure. It is highly
sensitive to water quality and is capable of removing particles as small as 0.01 micron. In addition, chemical pretreatment
is not used in this technology.

Ultraviolet Based Water Purifiers
Ultraviolet water purifiers use ultraviolet radiation that inactivates the DNA of micro-organisms present in the untreated
water. Once exposed to the UV light, these micro-organisms become incapable of developing immune mechanism against
UV light.
Ion Exchange Based Purifiers
The ion exchange technology percolates water through porous, spherical bead resin materials termed as ion-exchange
resins. Ions present in the water are exchanged for other ions fixed to the beads. Ion-exchange methods are commonly
used for softening and deionization to remove water hardness.

  • 6. 6© TechSci Research P r o d u c t O v e r v i e w ➢ A water purifier is a device used for removing unwanted chemicals and biological contaminants from water obtained from water bodies such as rivers, lakes, etc., to produce pure drinking water, which is fit for human consumption or for industrial use. ➢ Water purifiers are categorized as ‘point of use’ and ‘point of entry’ water purifiers. Point of Use (POU) water purifiers can be directly installed at the tap water supply point, which includes counter top, under sink, faucet and dispenser water purifier, whereas, Point of Entry (POE) water purifiers are installed at main water supply that reaches houses/commercial offices/industries, faucets or any other outlets.   • 7. 7© TechSci Research P r o d u c t O v e r v i e w Reverse Osmosis Membrane based Water Purifiers Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a membrane based separation process, in which RO membrane is responsible for the removal of impurities (suspended solids, macro molecules, divalent salt, monovalent salt, etc.) from contaminated water. The process allows water molecules to pass through a semi-permeable membrane separating impurities such as suspended solids, macro molecules, divalent and monovalent salts present in contaminated water. The RO membrane is capable of removing molecules with a pore ranging between 1000-0.0001 microns. Ultrafiltration Membrane based Water Purifiers Ultrafiltration membrane is a technology that removes impurities from contaminated water using pressure. It is highly sensitive to water quality and is capable of removing particles as small as 0.01 micron. In addition, chemical pretreatment is not used in this technology.   • 8. 8© TechSci Research P r o d u c t O v e r v i e w Ultraviolet Based Water Purifiers Ultraviolet water purifiers use ultraviolet radiation that inactivates the DNA of micro-organisms present in the untreated water. Once exposed to the UV light, these micro-organisms become incapable of developing immune mechanism against UV light. Ion Exchange Based Purifiers The ion exchange technology percolates water through porous, spherical bead resin materials termed as ion-exchange resins. Ions present in the water are exchanged for other ions fixed to the beads. Ion-exchange methods are commonly used for softening and deionization to remove water hardness.
