While listeningtothe radioaninterestingtopiccame upthatI like tospeakon. The radiopersonalities
were talkingaboutnamesandresumes.Little didIknow there isalot of discriminationinthe workforce
whenitcomesto hiringbasedoff the name on an applicationorresume. One commentedthatif you
have a unique name isitok to put anothername onyour resume, whichislying, andtell themyourreal
name at the interview.Anothermentionedtouse yourmiddle name,if itsnormal enough andmaybe
that will helpyourchancesof beinggrantedaninterview. Are we notsupposedtobe proudof whatour
parentsnamedus,we have beenlivingwithourname ourwhole life andyoumeantotell me Iam
betteroff lyingaboutmyname to possiblyget somethingthatIwant!
I thoughtpeople were consideredforjobsbasedoff of theircredentialsandexperience butif youcan’t
getpast the name thenhow wouldyouknow.Icouldonlyimagine how difficultitistobe inthe position
to hire individuals. Youhave the dauntingtasksof readingcountlessresumes, youhave toaccountfor
the fact that people maybe lying, whichmostof the time istrue, andyou have to figure outif that
personwouldbe a goodfitfor yourcompany.Whenin all reality,words onpapermeanverylittle
comparedto the personyoumeet. You mayhave an ideal candidate basedona resume but duringan
interview youfindoutthatpersonisjustnot the right fitforthe job, thisisdone overand overuntil you
findwhatyoubelieve tobe the bestcandidate forthe position. Butif youare lookingoverresumes
basedon theirname thenyoucouldmissouton the BEST personforthe job.
Job huntingisverytrickyand time consumingandaftera while itcanbe cumbersome.Inthisday and
age EVERYBODY islookingforemployment.Somuchsothat some are willingtosettle forwhateverthey
can get.I meanhey...we all have billstopay. But if myname isgoingto hindermychancesof evenbeing
consideredthenthere will be MANYpeoplethatwill be overlooked. We have tobe verycareful when
namingour children,we needtothinkabouttheirfuture andhow itwill affectthem, justbecauseyou
have a unique name youdon’thave to live uptothe stereotype of itandhave torealize youmay deal
witha lotof prejudice because of it.Yourname isthe most powerful thingyouhave andparentshave
the responsibilityof shapingtheirchild’sfuture the minute theyenterthisworldsimplybychoosinga
name.Nowwhoisto judge whetheraname is normal or notis subjective butinrealitywe all know.
So what’sthe alternative, how dowe getpastname discrimination, maybe we shouldputournamesat
the endof a jobapplicationandour resumesbecause quitehonestlyIhave averyunique name that I
love andI will neverlie aboutit. If mycredentialsdon’tspeakforthemselvesthenitmakesno
difference whatmyname is.
