Is your goal to encourage a love for reading? This session will focus on a fun way for
students to promote a book they love. It will help you with the ins and outs of creating a
reading fair at your school. Come find out what a reading fair is and get the tools/forms you
need to implement one at your school!

7. 1st Grade Standards
1.RL.1: With support,read and comprehend literature that is grade level
appropriate.
1.RN.1: With support, read and comprehend nonfiction that is grade-
level appropriate.
1.RL.2.3:Using key details, identify and describe the elements of plot,
character,and setting.
1.RN.2.2: Retell main ideas and key details of a text.
1.W.3.1: Write logically connected sentences to make a proposal to a
particular audience (e.g.,a parent,classmate,etc.) and give reasons
why the proposal should be considered.
1.ML.2.1:Demonstrate understanding of media by asking and answering
appropriate questions about what is read, heard, or viewed.
1.SL.2.1.: Participate in collaborative conversations about grade appropriate
topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

for the reading fair?
Before The Fair:
1. Date
2. Order: Tri-fold boards,
ribbons, etc.
1. Promote to kids

After the Fair:
1. Photos: newspaper, website
2. Awards Program
3. Open House
4. Projects Picked up

11. What does the big day look like?
● 8 ft. tables will fit 6 projects
● project drop off times
● Judges Meeting, coffee & donuts
● Supplies: 3 turn in trays, calculators, pencils, clipboards,
rubrics, judged slips, chairs.
● Student coloring sheets & Interview with Judge
● Judges confer about top range afterwards to decide
winners
12. ● Open for classes to visit-free promotion books and for
next year’s reading fair.
