Status on the New Page
Middle School
The Board received a status on construction progress and costs for the new Page
Middle School. It appears the construction schedule is on time for a projected
completion date of July 2015. Projected costs to date amount to $28,968,273
and revenues received to date for construction amounting to $27,763,348 (which
include previously approved bonds and other revenues), with a balance of
$1,204,925 yet to be received. The School Board plans to add 9 more employees
(teachers and staff) for the new school. I’ll keep you posted as we move further.
Purchasing Director
Proposes Outsourcing
Vehicle Garage
Services as Opposed to
an Expensive
Consolidated
Transportation Facility
The BOS and School Board decided to shelve the consolidated transportation
facility because of its significant expense. This facility would have been used to
accommodate both School and County vehicle maintenance efforts. As an
alternative, the County’s Purchasing Director suggested that perhaps both
Boards consider “intelligent outsourcing” of county and school vehicle
maintenance services (not including school busses) like the Sheriff’s department
has done with its fleet of vehicles – saving significant amounts of money. He
further suggested that the Sheriff’s outsourcing contracts could be expanded to
include County and School vehicles. The economic reality is that the County
and the Schools may have to take a hard look at outsourcing as an alternative
to save money. Other members of the BOS were delighted and commended
the Director to make such as cost saving suggestion.
Come on Out and
Have Fun at the
Guinea Jubilee!
I attended the unveiling of the Guinea Jubilee poster unveiling last Sunday at the
Ruritan Club. I was happy to see the large number of people who attended this
event and look forward to experiencing the Jubilee. The Guinea Jubilee (which
is held at the Ruritan Club’s festival grounds) is a two-day event that annually
attracts thousands of people to celebrate and honor the way of life in the
Guinea Neck. The Jubilee features cultural activities, arts, music and crafts
exhibits, a parade (starting at noon), delicious seafood, and a fireworks show to
end the event. Our festival is always held the last Friday and Saturday in
September – the 26th and 27th. Special thanks to the Jubilee Committee for their
hard work and unswerving dedication to putting this annual event together for
the enjoyment of all County citizens. Come on out and have fun with your
friends and family!
Next Scheduled
Meeting
The next scheduled meeting for the Board will be on October 7. Please come out
and participate, speak out, hold us accountable; be a part of the decision
making process!
