Below we are answering a handful of questions about one of the innovative
products or services offered by T.D. Williamson.
What is SmartPlug® isolation technology?
The SmartPlug® high pressure isolation tool from TDW
Offshore Services is specifically designed to isolate a section
of pipeline at normal operating pressure. This allows pipeline
repairs to be made without pressure reduction or bleeding
down the entire system. The SmartPlug® tool can be used
to isolate any medium, including gas, crude oil, distillates,
treated or untreated water, glycol and diesel. The tool is
composed of two independent modules, each of which
can fully hold line pressure, creating a true double block
isolation.
How is the tool activated and tracked?
The tetherless, highly piggable tool is activated, tracked
and monitored through use of a proprietary control and
communication system. Signals are sent to an extremely
low frequency (ELF) transceiver placed near the isolation
location. This transceiver provides real time two-way,
through-wall data transmission, allowing a remote operator
to send commands and receive confirmation of plug
conditions and line pressures. Plus, the tool includes an
onboard SmartTrack™ system for tracking and accurate
positioning.
What other features does the tool offer?
The tool is designed to be self-locked in the set position,
assuming delta pressure across the tool. So, the higher the
pressure, the harder the plug seals. There is also a redundant
unsetting system, and each tool is approved and certified by
Det Norske Veritas (DnV).
Is the tool versatile?
Very! The SmartPlug® isolation tool has proven itself in
nearly 200 applications – both onshore and offshore – thus
far, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of needs.
These include pipeline valve replacements or repairs, riser
replacements or repairs (including flexible risers), and
pressure testing and leak detection of risers or repaired
pipelines. The tool is also great for midline pipeline repairs
and tie-ins, dry tie-ins of risers or pipelines, platform
abandonment and bypass, and flex joint isolation for repair.
What advantages can I expect to see?
Use of SmartPlug® technology can help eliminate the
expense and time associated with de-commissioning and
re-commissioning a line. It can minimize the release of gas
or hydrocarbon vapors to the atmosphere by eliminating
or dramatically reducing blow down. It can also eliminate
the need for treatment chemicals and the disposal of
contaminated water associated with re-commissioning. In
certain scenarios, production can even continue while the
tool is in use. l
