Preface
The need to reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gasses requires that the global society take action now,
not just think about it. This proposal provides a vehicle toward motivating society by engaging it with
universally common desires, greed and acceptance.
Lotteries have, traditionally, been a good way to acquire finds for numerous types of non-profit
organizations; they seem to even justify their own existence, creating lottery fever, self-taxation, if you
wish. A modern-day Gold Rush.
Attracting customers would be the advantage of donating lottery entries. Advertising the lottery would
advertise for participating sponsors. People just playing the lottery for the money, and/or the esteem of
playing (e.g.: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge), would add to the advertising pool, benefitting the sponsors
and funding the public’s further education about AGW.
Certainly, almost any way to encourage the reduction of our carbon footprint can be incorporated into
The Game; keeping it as simple as possible, though, would be a blessing unto itself. There are many
organizations, that exist today, that could administer the game, or one could be created to do that,
exclusively. Anyone that has a desire to make it happen has free reign to do so.

Putting America into Action:
Lottery Fever to the Rescue
Need for action
The habitability of Planet Earth depends on mankind’s ability to
reduce its output of GreenHouse Gases (GHG) and curb man-made
climate change (Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW)). There are
many culprits involved in this crime against nature and requires a
multi-faceted approach in dealing with them. The term Carbon
Footprint is fairly well known as a measure of how much GHG
emission a certain activity or process produces; we must reduce the
size of this footprint if the situation on this planet is to remain
comfortable and affordable. In order to address the GHG problem, we
must engage society with a system that enthralls one and all. To
finance an educational program, a Lottery routinely raises copious
amounts for general funds; in 1996 they accounted for more than $17
billion of additional revenues to state treasuries1
. This will attract the
common folk that don’t think AGW is the
serious problem it is; they just want in on the
action. A running tally of entries, and their
frequency, could turn the project into a
competition, of sorts, and increase the chances for the faithful to win more as
they help out more. Bragging rights and a method for improving the planet;
what more could one ask for in a motivational endeavor.
Making it happen
Capturing society’s imagination is the first task to be undertaken for the necessary collaborations. If the
mythical creature known as Bigfoot, Sasquatch to the Salish, is used to represent the monstrous carbon
footprint we must deal with to sufficiently
mitigate AGW, we must subdue the Sasquatch
(S’quatch), even though ACW is real and
Squatch is not. In a variation on that theme, the
proposed project could be known as: Squash the
Squatch. There is no one magic-bullet that can
address the GHG issue, so the project must be as
diverse in its operation as with its attraction;
therefore, anything anybody does to improve
their energy efficiency, promote renewable
energy, or otherwise discourage fossil fuel use, would qualify them as an active participant.

Not only should the game be catchy in and of itself, but when the Crowd Psychology2
effects become
involved, the sky’s the limit. Manipulating society as a whole has long been a soft art form; it has been
used to manipulate groups since prehistoric times, usually
with violent results. Group comportment has been attributed
to countless fashions, customs and behaviors and has been
studied by noted psychologists such as Sigmund Freud
(crowd psychology), Carl Jung (collective unconscious) and
Mark Twain (mob mentality). The omnipresent cell phone is
an example of collective “groupthink”3
in a peaceful
demeanor; in some cultures where there is no electricity used
for lighting, heating or cooking, it is only used for charging
the phone. The collective mind and the cell phone comprised the majority of the means for the Arab
Spring of 2013; we should enthusiastically use both to mobilize the global efforts combating AGW.
How it works
In order to encourage universal participation in Squash the Squatch, lottery tickets should be available
at every Lotto outlet and monthly drawings would be held to promote
participation. Encouraging continual involvement would comprise of a
simple registration process by providing a home, or business, location and a
baseline energy use. This involvement would create more (environmentally
positive) employment opportunities than the entire Keystone XL pipeline.
Entries for the monthly drawing could be issued based on purchases of energy
saving products and actual energy use reduction. Manufacturers should see
added advertising incentives and contribute to promote their products.
Proceeds could be shared by the participating agencies, governmental and non-governmental alike.
Ways to join in would include:
 Simply buy a ticket. Non-homeowners, youth and others not directly
in control of purchasing energy conservation products (and just
gamblers) would be able to join in. Everybody would be able to join
and show their support for the Squash the Squatch movement.
 An entry for each dollar value, percentage point decrease on a registered
energy bill (electricity, natural gas, heating oil) e.g., a $2 saving from a $20
bill would be a 10% reduction and, therefore, 10 entries for the monthly
drawing. There would have to be some creative sponsorships to pay for lotto
entries in this area; independent sponsors would be required for these.
Squash the Squatch Sven Erik Pedersen
5
 Entries for dollar amounts spent on energy efficiency (EE) products: LED
and CF lighting, envelope insulation, window upgrades, smart metering and
energy management software and monitoring devices. New construction
would need to factor into this, probably just from purchasing EE materials.
 Entries for purchasing renewable energy conversion devices: Photovoltaic (PV) systems or
upgrades, Solar Thermal, Wind Generators; leasing would also need to be
taken into account. Electro-chemical Battery, Hydrogen/Fuel Cell and
potential energy storage would also qualify in this category; any means to
encourage distributed power generation and eliminate burning coal, oil and
natural gas for mere conversion to electricity.
 Purchasing Electric Vehicles (EV) or hybrid electric vehicles earns entries.
Whether it’s a small, super-efficient car, a family sized people mover, or a
motorcycle. Terminating a relationship with a gas-guzzler would also
acquire lotto entries, with more entries being earned for the amount of
potential carbon sequestered.
 Entries for each trip made on mass transit. Whether it’s a single ride or a
monthly/annual pass. Squatchies for passes would probably need to be
awarded as a set amount ($ value) rather than being based on actual trips
due to logistical variables between different Transit Authorities.
 Entries for investment in renewable energy companies/stocks. Donations to renewable energy
advocate groups could also qualify. This would be most advantageous in the ongoing
competition phase.
 Entries for divesting of fossil fuel companies/stocks. The more Big
Oil or Big Coal stock dumped, the more lotto entries, and more
importantly, the fossil fuel companies lose funding for their assault
on reason, there is more palpable evidence of societal conviction and
the higher the participant’s cumulative score. Creative sponsorships would have to be generated
on this one too.
The Return on Investment (ROI) model for the sponsor’s
advertising dollar is ethereal, at best. However, manufacturers
and service-providers that offer entries/Squatchies as
inducements wouldn’t be casting their marketing bread onto the
(air) waves haphazardly; the incentive-to-buy would only be
incurred after the purchase had been made. Being associated
with a global movement would feature sponsors in a
philanthropic light as well as being an effective marketing
tactic.

Marketing Squatchy
The business of running a generic lottery to finance benevolent operations is well documented and
would provide the platform for the competitive, more environmentally beneficial, aspects of Squash the
Squatch as a whole. For each monthly lottery entry, every contestant would receive an e-token, to keep
score. A collection of “Squatchy” (or some catchy term) tallies would be accumulated to demonstrate,
to one and all, their relative contribution toward reigning in AGW. Celebrity
endorsements could augment the Crowd Psychology aspect of Squash the
Squatch fever by the proponents displaying their personal Squatchies as
Badges of Honor. Some enthusiastic contributors could wind up looking like
highly decorated military commanders; this is, after all, the most important
crusade that mankind has ever undertaken. The ubiquitous Livestrong
bracelets faded out of the limelight with the remission of key celebrities’ afflictions. Unfortunately,
we’re in for a significantly lengthier battle with AGW and a massive number of Squatchies would
meaningfully demonstrate a contributor’s resolve for planetary recovery, whereas a bunch of yellow
rubber bands on an arm merely suggests eccentricity.
There would undoubtedly be icons for each magnitude of 10 tallies, for scorekeeping to remain
somewhat manageable. There would be the casual players with single Squatchies and
deka-Squatchies (10), billions of curious hecto-Squatchies (100), millions of proud
kilo- (Kill-a?) Squatchies, a cadre of six-digit Sasquatch Enthusiasts, and it would
definitely not cost $1,000,000 to become a Mega-Squatchy, with multiple tallies
resulting in the multiple benefits from numerous actions. Squatchy Fever could
certainly surpass the attraction of the lottery feature of the whole project. That is definitely the
circumstance and requirement for sustainability to become self-reinforcing.
Since this country’s residents are the largest energy consumers, per capita, something needs to focus
our attention and our conviction on AGW reduction. Something that
can become as ubiquitous as the cell phone is today, with the proper
encouragement (CP), perhaps everyone would feel compelled to
carry around their Squatchies on their phones. Additionally, with this
country being the bastion of capitalism, has the highest disposable
income and is obsessed with obtaining more, the method of attaining
our attention would be through offering the opportunity to attain
excessive amounts of cash in the process. With Squash the Squatch
becoming a national trend, this could be a match made in heaven; the
need for acceptance into the burgeoning brotherhood of global
guardians and the enticement of winning big bucks. Bottom line, we
must find a way to unite society in an effort to transform rampant
AGW from a raging beast into a creature that is more civilized and
easier to live with.
