Home visit refers to meeting the health need of the people
at their door step to maintain the health & to reduce
mortality &morbidity of family.
AIMS OF HOMEVISIT

PRINCIPLES OF HOME VISIT

Be aware of the community resources and use

Evaluate your own work. Remember the quality
of care is more important than the number of
home visits made.
Make a note of important facts about the home
visits made in your diary.
When you return to center records relevant facts
in the individual health records or in the family
folder.
PURPOSES OF HOME VISIT
A visit to the home may be –
- in response to a need felt by an individual.
- as a part of planned visiting programme.
- to investigate the source of infectious diseases.
- problem identification.
- health education.
- to follow treatment and care.
- to supervise and guide.
5. ADVANTAGES OF HOME VISIT
1) Nurse sees the individual and family in his own setting.
2) Gives insight into family situations.
3) Gives opportunity to the nurse to observe the
background.
4) To identify the needs of the individual.
5) Family feels free to clear their doubts.
6)Gives chance to meet the needs of other family
members.
7) Influential person in the family can be observed.
8) Gives opportunity to look for new problems.
DISADVANTAGES OF HOMEVISIT
1) Time consuming.
2) Not possible to provide complete and
extensive nursing services.
3) Disputes and disinterest make the guidance difficult.
4) No exposure to other person suffering from the same
illness.
5) Lack of equipment and recourses,low literacy, lack of
skill in the community health nurse.
STEPS IN HOME VISITING
1) Planning for a visit
Consider factors-
- Physical and environmental status.
- Family’s cultural background.

2. Approach to family ( how to make a visit )
- Locate the right house.
- Knock the door.
- Introduce yourself.
- Establish rapport.

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENTS REQUIREDFOR
HOME VISIT AND THEIR USE :
1.Nursing bag
2. Family folder , individual cards,paper, pen, pencil etc
3.Health education material
4. Other equipments as per the requirement i.e UNICEF’s
delivery kits, immunization kits, antenatal kits, post natal
kits etc
BAG TECHNIQUE
1.Select clean area for bag
2.Spread newspaper or a plastic square on a flat surface
and place the bag on it
3.Secure newspaper from family if possible
4.Explain the family how paper bag is made
5.Remove the watch
6.Unbutton the outer lining
7.Take out soap and towel
8.Keep the towel and soap dish in a clean place

10.Touch the inner part and take out necessary equipment
11.Close the bag ( half covered )
12.Give the nursing care
13.Clean the articles
14.Give the paper bag for disposal
15.Open the bag and replace articles
16.Close the inner lining
17.Bring the soap dish and towel
18.Touch the outer part and close the bag
19.Fold used paper with used side inside
