3. METHODOLOGY AND DATA COLLECTION
This part explains in details methods, steps and
procedures to be taken in collecting information
necessary for accomplishing the project
It also includes consultations to the supervisor,
interviews and experienced people, reviewing
different authors, data collection, data analysis,
discussing the findings, conclusion and
recommendation as follows;
4. Data Collection
Data collection is a systematic process of gathering
information that has to be used in solving a problem
or in the design of a particular system. Different methods
are used in data collection, but the methods mostly used
are questionnaire, interviews, observation, existing
records and Experiment.
5. There are two types of data which are: -
Primary data
Secondary data
6. Primary Data
Primary data means quantitative data originated for the
first time by researcher through direct effort and
experience, specifically for the purpose of addressing
research problem. The primary data collected justify
the problem, as the proposed project concerns the data
that we have collected at ECOACT Company Limited
at DAR ES SALAAM and the method used was
Personal interview.

8. Personal Interview
Is a data collection method in which an
interviewer asks questions to a respondent face
to face.
In our project we used this method to collect
data by asking the following questions:
9. Student: Does your industry have a metal detection
system during recycling process?
Engineer: Yes, we have.
Student: How does it operate?
Engineer: When metal is detected, the microcontroller
alerts the siren and stops the conveyor belt then the
sorting is done manually by operator.
Student: What problems do you face with your current
metal detection system?
10. Engineer: Increase in downtime of equipment due
to manual sorting.
Damage of equipment used for recycling.
Reduced quality of recycled plastic.
Safety hazard for workers.
Student: What types of metals are detected?
Engineer: Steel and Iron.
11. Secondary Data
In this area it consists of hardware and
software data of the device.
Secondary data implies second hand
information which has already been collected
and recorded by any person other than the user
but can be used to support the primary data
collected.
12. According to the area of concentration of our project
secondary data is based on the following components or parts:

13. COMPONENT SPECIFICATIONS
Power Supply
This is an important part of proposed system as it
is used to energize all components of the entire
proposed system. The designed system uses a
240VAC/12V DC power supply.

Data analysis, Is the process of evaluating data
using analytical and statistical tools to discover
useful information and aid in circuit designing.
23. Power Supply
The supply is 12 voltage Dc, Then through
voltage regulator 5 DC voltage is obtained
which is useful to control circuit.
Voltage regulator type 7805 IC selected
having the following specifications
Dc output of the voltage regulator 7805 IC =
5V
Input voltage of the regulator, VDC = 12V
24. LED (Light Emitting Diode )
• The rated voltage and current of light emitting
diode is 1.8-3.3Vdc the Arduino output voltage
is 5V which is supply voltage for LED the
value of the limiting resistor can be calculated
as
